Redshirt freshman Sir Mells to enter transfer portal

Sir Mells becomes the fifth Oregon player to enter the transfer portal this week. The Ducks are now down to 82 scholarships.

Another player on the Oregon Ducks roster is set to enter the transfer portal on Wednesday.

Redshirt freshman defensive lineman Sir Mells will reported enter the portal, becoming the fifth Duck to do so on Wednesday alone. The others include Avante Dickerson, Darren Barkins, Anthony Jones, and Harrison Taggart.

Mells was a 3-star recruit in the 2022 class, rated as the No. 1,013 overall and the No. 135 defensive lineman in the nation. He played sparingly as a true freshman, registering one pass breakup in the Ducks’ early season game against Eastern Washington.

The Ducks are now down to 82 scholarships on the roster heading into Saturday’s spring game.

Position change for Sir Mells? Recent social media post appears to suggest it

A new picture circulating online shows that defensive lineman Sir Mells could potentially be switching to the offensive side of the ball.

At this point in the season, we spend a lot of time looking at the newer players on the roster, often looking at jersey numbers or positional changes ahead of spring football. A year ago, a lot of the buzz in Eugene was surrounding Jackson Powers-Johnson, and whether he would stick on the offensive line, or potentially play on the defensive line as he had in Oregon’s bowl game.

This year, there’s another positional question mark on the offensive line for the Ducks. The question now is where redshirt freshman Sir Mells is going to be lining up this spring, on offense or defense?

A recent picture of Mells at Oregon practice this week raised some eyebrows, with the freshman wearing a white offensive jersey, rather than a green defensive jersey. Some fans took notice, and Mells mother, who is a well-known personality on social media, got in on the action.

Oregon Ducks hold commitment from defensive lineman Sir Mells

Despite multiple coaching changes, the Oregon Ducks landed three-star defensive tackle Sir Mells (Henderson, Nevada) on early signing day.

The 2022 early signing period is off to a good start for the Oregon Ducks and new head coach Dan Lanning.

Linebacker Devon Jackson made his commitment to Oregon official on Wednesday morning, and he was quickly followed by Liberty High School (Henderson, NV) defensive tackle Sir Mells.

Mells initially visited Eugene on June 4 and verbally committed to the Ducks the following day, and now he is officially going to join Lanning’s squad in 2022 after making the announcement on Twitter himself:

Mells is a three-star defensive tackle who is ranked as the No. 142 prospect at his position. He had 14 offers, including Washington, Arizona, Maryland,  Michigan, Florida, Ohio State, Michigan State, and USC.

The coaching turmoil right before early signing period had many Oregon fans worried about losing high profile recruits, but Lanning’s recruiting prowess, defensive wizardry, and the decision to hold onto Don Johnson Jr. – who DID all the legwork in recruiting Mells – no doubt helped keep Mells, Jackson and potentially many others from jumping ship at the last minute.
