Report: Pelicans agree to minimum-contract deals with Wenyen Gabriel, Sindarius Thornwell

New Orleans agreed to veteran minimum contracts with forward Wenyen Gabriel and guard Sindarius Thornwell on Monday.

While the Pelicans are still working to officially finalize the trade of Jrue Holiday to the Milwaukee Bucks, the front office is still making moves on the fringes this off-season. According to Andrew Lopez of ESPN, New Orleans agreed to veteran minimum contracts with forward Wenyen Gabriel and guard Sindarius Thornwell on Monday.

Thornwell is the more familiar of the two for Pelican fans after being signed to replace Darius Miller inside the bubble last season. Thornwell, though, did not see the court until after the team was eliminated from playoff contention, playing a combined 35 minutes over the final two games. He spent much of last season with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers in the G Leauge, averaging 9.2 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists in 40 games.

Gabriel, meanwhile, was also a fringe player last season, playing 11 games with Sacramento then 19 games with the Trailblazers and seven games in the G Leauge. Unlike Thornwell, Gabriel did have a role with Portland inside the bubble, playing in four of the team’s five playoff games.

Jrue Holiday, JJ Redick, Josh Hart react to NBA players strike inside bubble

The Milwaukee Bucks’ decision not to take the court on Wednesday in protest of the shooting of Jacob Blake sent shockwaves throughout the league.

The Milwaukee Bucks started both a league- and sports-wide movement on Thursday afternoon by not taking the court for their scheduled Game 5 contest against the Orlando Magic. The decision came without warning, eventually leading to players for all three playoff games slated for Thursday to strike.

It was also a decision that kickstarted similar strikes across multiple leagues. The Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds did not play their regular season game on Thursday, one of a handful of MLB games that did not take place. The WNBA and MLS saw it’s players take a stand and refuse to play as well.

Though the New Orleans Pelicans were not directly included in the players’ decision to strike, they supported their fellow players from afar on social media.

Josh Hart tweeted out a phrase that many NBA players shared as the Bucks’ decision to not take the court was first taking place.

JJ Redick, who is apart of the Social Justice Leadership Coalition with teammate Lonzo Ball and Saints linebacker Demario Davis, did not directly share his thoughts on social media. However, he did retweet tweets from Jamal Murray of the Nuggets and Donovan Mitchell of the Jazz as well as Davis.

Jrue Holiday did not take to Twitter but instead shared his thoughts through Instagram, Holiday shared a tweet from ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski while saying “This is bigger than sports” and also sharing a video of the Milwaukee Bucks’ statement saying “Proud of my brothers”.

Sindarius Thornwell, the newest Pelican who was signed prior to heading into the bubble, retweeted a tweet from Jerian Grant that also called this movement bigger than basketball.

As it stands on Wednesday night, the future of the playoffs seems in serious doubt. On Wednesday evening, the players inside the bubble held a meeting with coaches to discuss their plans moving forward. Various reports differ on the specifics, but what is known is that both the Lakers and Clippers voted to boycott the rest of the season before walking out while the Bucks and Raptors were called two of the strongest voices in the room.

A Board of Governor’s meeting is slated for 11 a.m. Eastern on Thursday while the players will hold a second joint meeting at the same time with the season’s future in the balance.

WATCH: Lonzo Ball roasts Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart while bowling

The New Orleans Pelicans spent Friday evening at the bowling alley and Lonzo Ball was sure to roast each of his teammates on Instagram.

The NBA season taking place in a bubble means that only a limited amount of activities are available to the teams and players for the days and weeks to come. The result, though, is moments like the one Lonzo Ball posted to his Instagram.

One of the places open to the players is a bowling alley, a location the Pelicans traveled to on Friday evening. While every player on the team may be a natural at basketball, few of them are naturals at bowling. And Lonzo Ball was sure to call out each one of them on his Instagram Story.

Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, Jaxson Hayes and Sindarius Thornwell all were recipients of Ball’s trash talk. Interestingly, Ball himself was not filmed bowling, though Josh Hart was certain to point out on his own Instagram Story who was the winner in their battle.

The lack of video of Ball is interesting. Is his bowling form as poor as his shooting form? How odd could a bowling form be? Does he throw it over his head? Does it also come across his body?

Hopefully, Hart or Ingram or another teammate return the favor and roast Ball on their own Instagram Stories next bowling outing.
