Brandon Dubinsky reignites Crosby vs. Ovechkin debate with savage takedown

Brandon Dubinsky’s grudge against Sidney Crosby runs deep.

Brandon Dubinsky wants you to know where he stands on the Sidney Crosby versus Alex Ovechkin debate. The 34-year-old member of the Columbus Blue Jackets — who has essentially played his final game in the NHL in 2019 due to a chronic wrist injury — officially reignited the age-old debate between the two NHL stars after some harsh words about Crosby on a podcast this week.

In speaking to the The Garage Beers Podcast on Thursday, Dubinsky made it crystal clear who he prefers between Crosby and Ovechkin.

“Dude, f— Sid. I’ll take Ovi every day of the week.”

Dubinsky then followed up his comments with a small anecdote.

“Listen, I asked Ovi for an autographed stick. I got it from him, thanked him for it. I would never ask Sid for a stick, ever.”

The forward then doubled down on Twitter on Friday, stating that even though Crosby is better than him, the Pittsburgh Penguins captain “just whined way too much and Ovi just shut up and played hard.”

It’s no surprise Dubinsky has such animosity towards Crosby, considering their in-game history with one another. Dubinsky and Crosby, over the course of their careers, have butted heads multiple times, from locker room exchanges to a rare fight from the usually stoic Penguins captain.

The tension between the two came to a head when Dubinsky earned himself a one-game suspension in 2015 for cross-checking Crosby in the neck.

The Ovechkin vs. Crosby debate has seen much less airtime over the years, especially after the Washington Capitals won its first Stanley Cup in 2018. Both Crosby and Ovechkin are elite caliber hockey players, with Crosby winning three Stanley Cups, two Hart trophies for league MVP, two Art Ross trophies for being the league leader in points, among countless other awards. Ovechkin, on the other hand, has just one Stanley Cup ring, but has three Hart trophies, one Art Ross Trophy, and won the Calder Trophy for rookie of the year in 2006.

Ovechkin also sits at No. 6 in NHL history in goals scored with 724 over his 16-year career, while Crosby is just six points behind his Capitals counterpart in 164 fewer regular season games played.

It’s been clear for some time that Crosby and Ovechkin are hard to compare to one another due to the differences in their roles and play styles. At this point in their respective careers, it’s fair to say that Crosby is one of the best, most decorated overall players in NHL, while Ovechkin is one of the top pure goal scorers in league history.

Still, the debate makes for some fun chatter online, and it’s clear Dubinsky has maintained his line in the sand for where he stands on the topic.

All in a day’s work.

Evander Kane calls for athletes ‘like Tom Brady and Sidney Crosby’ to speak out against racism

“We need so many more athletes that don’t look like me speaking out about this.”

Protests in major cities across the country sparked by the killing of George Floyd have continued to pop up over the last few days. Floyd, a black man, was killed by a Minneapolis police officer put his knee into his neck for over eight minutes.

As more people have begun to take to the streets, more athletes and celebrities are lending their voices and resources to those people in an effort to support their clause and accentuate their plight.

One of those athletes has been San Jose Sharks winger Evander Kane. Kane has always been vocal about the mistreatment of black people, but he’s been particularly active on social media and different platforms since Floyd’s killing.

And now, he’s calling on other white athletes to join him.

In an appearance on First Take on Friday, Kane said he hopes that more athletes who aren’t people of color to speak out about these injustices across the country.

“We need so many more athletes that don’t look like me speaking out about this, having the same amount of outrage that I have inside. And using that to voice their opinion, to voice their frustration. Because that’s the only way it’s going to change. We’ve been outraged for hundreds of years and nothing’s changed. It’s time for guys like Tom Brady and Sidney Crosby and those type of figures to speak up about what is right and, clearly in this case, what is unbelievably wrong. Because that’s the only way we’re going to actually create, unify anger to create that necessary change. Especially when you talk about systematic racism.”

Toronto Maple Leafs at Pittsburgh Penguins odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Tuesday’s Toronto Maple Leafs at Pittsburgh Penguins sports betting odds, with NHL matchup analysis and picks.

The Toronto Maple Leafs (31-21-8) visit the Steel City Tuesday for a 7 p.m. ET puck drop at the PPG Paints Arena against the Pittsburgh Penguins (36-15-6). We analyze the Leafs-Penguins odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips around this matchup.

Maple Leafs at Penguins: Projected starting goalies

Frederik Andersen vs. Tristan Jarry

Anderson lost back-to-back starts, including a 5-2 loss to the Buffalo Sabres in Toronto’s last game on Sunday. He’s now at 24-11-6 on the season with a .908 save percentage and a 2.93 goals against average.

Jarry has been better than Matt Murray as the Penguins netminder in essentially the same amount of games. He has a higher winning percentage and save percentage plus gives up fewer goals per game. Jarry is 19-8-1 with a .930 SV% and a 2.14 GAA.

Prediction

Penguins 4, Leafs 2

Moneyline (ML)

The Penguins are a phenomenal home team with a 21-5-4 record and a +1.06 goal differential in games at home. Pittsburgh crushed the Maple Leafs, 6-1, in their first meeting of the season on Nov. 16. The game was played in Pittsburgh, where the Penguins have owned the Leafs in recent years (10-4 in the last 14 home games against Toronto). Furthermore, this is a bad spot for the Leafs, who are 0-8 in their last eight in the fourth game of a 4-in-6 scenario.

BET PENGUINS -139 ON THE MONEYLINE.

New to sports betting? A $100 wager on the Penguins to win would return a profit of $71.94.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

This game could be a more competitive game as Toronto +1.5 (-200) is starting its top goaltender in Anderson, whereas the Leafs started Kasimir Kaskisuo for his first, and only, career NHL game in their first meeting. But the Penguins -1.5 (+165) are the hotter team—winning five out of their last seven games with their only two losses coming against a Tampa Bay Lightning team that is second in the NHL in points. Also, five of the last six Leafs-Penguins games have been decided by two or more goals.

TAKE THE PENGUINS ON THE PUCK LINE.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 6.5 (-115) is the right play on the total because the trends say so and BetMGM is trying to scare bettors off with heavier vig on the Under. Three out of the last four Leafs-Penguins games have gone Under the projected total. The Under is 3-0-1 in Penguins last four games as a favorite and 3-0-2 in their last five versus Eastern Conference foes.

Montreal Canadiens at Pittsburgh Penguins odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Friday’s Montreal Canadiens at Pittsburgh Penguins sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis, picks and best bets.

The Montreal Canadiens (27-25-7) visit the Steel City to play the Pittsburgh Penguins (34-15-6) at PPG Paints Arena in a 7 p.m. ET puck drop. We analyze the Canadiens-Penguins odds and lines, while providing NHL betting tips around this matchup.

Canadiens at Penguins: Projected starting goalies

Carey Price vs. Matt Murray

Price dropped his last two starts against the Boston Bruins (4-1) and the Arizona Coyotes (3-2). His record is 24-20-4 with a .913 save percentage and 2.71 goals against average through 48 games played (all starts).

In the other crease, Murray is coming in on consecutive losses himself, but both were to the Tampa Bay Lightning, who have the second-most points in the NHL. Murray is 16-7-5 on the season with a .902 SV% and 2.82 GAA.

Prediction

Penguins 3, Canadiens 2

Moneyline (ML)

This is the third meeting this year between the Canadiens and Penguins with the season series tied 1-1. Both games were won by the road team and both went Over the projected total. The Canadiens (+155) have been better on the road this season with a 14-10-3 record and a plus-.26 goal differential on the road compared to a 13-15-4 record and minus-.33 goal differential at home. Also, Montreal has won two straight games in Pittsburgh.

The Penguins (-189) are one of the better teams at home this season with a 19-5-4 record in Pittsburgh. Their scheduled starting goalie, Murray, has a 4-1 lifetime record against Montreal with a .921 SV% and 2.19 GAA. PASS ON THE MONEYLINE because there isn’t enough value on either side.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Despite the low odds, the CANADIENS (+1.5, -167) are the right play here because of their against the spread trends. Montreal is 17-10 ATS on the road and 21-7 when getting 1.5 goals. Pittsburgh is just 11-17 ATS at home and 13-23 when laying 1.5 goals. Price has been better on the road than at home this season. He has a better record, higher SV% and lower GAA in 21 road starts. Also, the underdog is 5-0 in the last five meetings.

Over/Under (O/U)

The last three Canadiens-Penguins games went Under the projected total. Plus, the Under has cashed in four straight Canadiens games and two consecutive Penguins games. The Canadiens have played a lot of close, low-scoring games against quality opponents recently. The Under is 3-0-1 in the Canadiens last four games versus a team with a winning record and 5-1-1 in the Canadiens last seven games as an underdog.

BET UNDER 5.5 (+105).

Penguins-Rangers odds: NY Rangers slight dogs at MSG

Previewing Tuesday’s Pittsburgh Penguins at New York Rangers sports betting odds and lines, with NHL matchup analysis and picks.

The Pittsburgh Penguins (10-6-1) travel to Manhattan to face the New York Rangers (7-6-2) at Madison Square Garden Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. ET. We analyze the Penguins-Rangers odds and lines while providing NHL betting tips around this matchup.

Penguins at Rangers: Projected starting goalies

Matt Murray vs. Alexandar Georgiev

Murray has a 9-3-1 record so far with a 2.35 goals against average and .916 save percentage. He has won consecutive starts beyond regulation while stopping 49 of his last 54 shots faced.

Georgiev is confirmed to be in net after Henrik Lundqvist played Sunday. Georgiev is 3-3-1 with a 2.87 GAA and .913 save percentage. He seeks to bounce back tonight after getting shelled for six goals on 40 shots at home against the Ottawa Senators last Monday.

Penguins at Rangers: Odds, picks and betting tips

Odds courtesy of BetMGM; access them at USA TODAY Sports for a full set of today’s betting odds. Odds last updated Tuesday at 8:00 a.m. ET.

Prediction

Rangers 4, Penguins 3

Moneyline (ML)

The RANGERS (-106) are without C Mika Zibanejad (head) but Pittsburgh will be without C Sidney Crosby (lower body) for the next few games. That certainly levels the ice some. Also, New York not starting Lundqvist may be a benefit as Georgiev wants to show his last start was a fluke.

A $10 bet on New York results in a $9.43 profit with an outright win.

Puck Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

Typically, when there is a very close moneyline, the spread is very divergent. If Pittsburgh was not the slightly favored team, there would be more enticement. However, that is not the case. AVOID.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 6.5 (+120) is worth a tiny bet Tuesday night as both teams will yield some goals. Pittsburgh allows 3.14 goals per game on the road while New York allows 3.6 per contest at home. The Rangers could lure the Penguins into a more high-event game than they bargained for.
