Panthers Week 5 injury report: 3 players ruled out vs. Bears

The Panthers have ruled out three players ahead of Sunday’s visit to Chicago.

As expected, the Carolina Panthers have ruled out starting middle linebackers Shaq Thompson and Josey Jewell from their Week 5 matchup against the Chicago Bears. Thompson will miss the remainder of the campaign with a torn Achilles tendon while Jewell has been sidelined with hamstring and groin injuries.

2024 third-round pick and rookie ‘backer Trevin Wallace is in line to get his first career start in the middle of Carolina’s defense. Veterans Claudin Cherelus and Chandler Wooten, who was promoted to the active roster on Tuesday, should also help fill in for Thompson and Jewell.

In addition, head coach Dave Canales told reporters following today’s practice that all players who have been listed as questionable are likely to play.

In a bit of positive news, leading pass catcher Diontae Johnson returned to practice after missing Wednesday’s outing. He was a limited participant.

Panthers WR Diontae Johnson misses Wednesday’s practice with new injury

LG Damien Lewis and NT Shy Tuttle returned to practice for the Panthers. But WR Diontae Johnson was out with an ankle injury.

The Carolina Panthers welcomed a handful of players back to the practice field to kick off Week 5.

Among those in session on Wednesday included starting left guard Damien Lewis and starting nose tackle Shy Tuttle, both of whom sat out from this past Sunday’s loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Lewis missed his first game of the season with his UCL tear while Tuttle missed his second due to a foot issue.

Joining the two were tight end Ian Thomas and cornerback Dane Jackson. Thomas and Jackson were officially designated to return to practice from injured reserve this morning and will have 21 days to be activated to the main roster.

There was, however, some discouraging news—as wide receiver Diontae Johnson was sidelined due to an ankle injury. Johnson, the team’s leading pass catcher, was dealing with a groin strain last week.

Panthers Week 4 injury report: Starting LG Damien Lewis out vs. Bengals

As expected, Panthers G Damien Lewis will not suit up for Sunday’s clash with the Bengals.

Carolina Panthers starting left guard Damien Lewis may have to save his big boy pants for next week.

As expected, the fifth-year hog molly will not suit up for Sunday’s matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. Lewis, who tore his UCL in the Week 3 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, did not participate in any of the team’s practices this week.

Second-year lineman and 2023 fourth-round pick Chandler Zavala is set to get the nod in place of Lewis.

In an unexpected hiccup, however, fellow starting guard Robert Hunt was limited in today’s practice with a hip injury. He is considered questionable and would, per head coach Dave Canales, give way to Brady Christensen if he cannot go.

In addition, wide receiver Diontae Johnson is on track to play after missing Thursday’s practice. Johnson, who dealt with a groin strain during the summer, sat out of the rainy session as a precautionary measure.

Panthers WR Diontae Johnson misses Thursday’s practice with groin injury

The Panthers were without WR Diontae Johnson and LG Damien Lewis at Thursday’s practice.

Another day, another practice without starting left guard Damien Lewis.

On Thursday, the Carolina Panthers held their standout hog molly out of practice for the second consecutive outing. Lewis, who made an early exit in the Week 3 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, is currently dealing with an elbow injury.

Head coach Dave Canales provided an update on Lewis’ status yesterday.

“He injured his UCL,” Canales told reporters. “They did some assessment of that. They gave us a really broad window for that one. So, we’re trying to just push him and see what we can get out of him, see if we can get him back out there. But that’s kinda up in the air.”

His availability is very much in the air for Sunday, when the Panthers host the 0-3 Cincinnati Bengals in their second home game of the season. If Lewis cannot go, expect second-year lineman and 2023 fourth-round pick Chandler Zavala to get the starting nod at left guard.

The team was also without its top wideout in Diontae Johnson, who missed practice with a groin injury. He told reporters, however, that his absence was a precaution.

Johnson is fresh off notching a career-high 122 receiving yards.

Panthers QB Andy Dalton pops up on Wednesday’s injury report

Panthers QB Andy Dalton showed up on Wednesday’s injury report with an ankle issue.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Andy Dalton seems to be a little banged up after his triumphant performance.

The 36-year-old was listed on the first injury report of the week ahead of this Sunday’s matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. But don’t fret, Panthers fans, he was still a full participant despite an ankle injury.

Dalton, in his first start since replacing struggling second-year quarterback Bryce Young, completed 26 of his 37 throws for 319 yards and three touchdowns in the 36-22 upset over the Las Vegas Raiders. The stunning victory saw Dalton become the first NFL quarterback this season to pass for both 300 yards and three scores in a single game.

Panthers Week 3 inactives: 6 players out vs. Raiders

DT Shy Tuttle headlines today’s inactives for the Panthers.

All has not been lost for the Carolina Panthers’ defensive line in Week 3.

This afternoon’s matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders will already be missing Pro Bowler Derrick Brown and nose tackle Shy Tuttle. Brown, of course, had his season ended due to a meniscus tear he sustained in Week 1 while Tuttle, who was listed as doubtful on Friday’s injury report, was officially ruled out yesterday.

With those two down, the Carolina defense was left with just one opening-day starter from their line—A’Shawn Robinson. But Robinson, who was down as questionable after three limited practices this week, will be in uniform.

He should be joined in the trench by Jayden Peevy, Nick Thurman, LaBryan Ray and DeShawn Williams—who was elevated from the practice squad on Saturday.

Here are the six inactives for the Panthers here in Week 3:

  • CB Shemar Bartholomew
  • CB Tariq Castro-Fields
  • G Jarrett Kingston
  • C Andrew Raym
  • TE Messiah Swinson
  • DT Shy Tuttle

And for the host Raiders:

  • LB Divine Deablo
  • WR Ramel Keyton
  • RB Dylan Laube
  • WR Tyreik McAllister
  • G Jordan Meredith
  • CB Decamerion Richardson

Panthers elevate DL DeShawn Williams for Week 3 matchup vs. Raiders

The Panthers have elevated DL DeShawn Williams in light of another absence in the trenches.

The Carolina Panthers have called up some much-needed reinforcements for the trenches.

On Saturday afternoon, the team announced that they have elevated defensive lineman DeShawn Williams from the practice squad ahead of their Week 3 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Williams, who was signed to the practice squad back on Sept. 10, spent last season with the Panthers. The 6-foot-1, 295-pounder started in 10 of his 16 games for Carolina in 2023—recording 33 combined tackles, 1.0 sack, seven quarterback hits and a pass defensed.

His presence may be needed in the absence of starter Shy Tuttle, who has now been ruled out of tomorrow’s contest. Tuttle, who was listed as doubtful on Friday’s injury report due to a foot issue, will not travel with the team out west.

Carolina could also be missing another starting defensive lineman in A’Shawn Robinson, who carries a “questionable” status into the contest. Robinson (knee) put in a pair of limited practices on Thursday and Friday after not participating in Wednesday’s session.

Not to mention, the unit will continue to be without Pro Bowler Derrick Brown due to his season-ending meniscus tear.

Biggest storylines for Panthers vs. Raiders in Week 3

Will the Panthers get lucky in Las Vegas with Red 14 on Sunday?

Will the Carolina Panthers finally start finding themselves some winnings out west this weekend?

Here are the biggest storylines for their Week 3 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders . . .

Roulette

Stephen Lew-Imagn Images

The Panthers placed all of their chips on quarterback Bryce Young in 2023. But since No. 9 has yet to hit, they’ve now moved their pieces to Red 14.

14th-year veteran Andy Dalton was named the team’s new starter after a disappointing two-game stretch to begin the season. Carolina’s 0-2 start saw Young throw for just 245 yards and three interceptions while leading the offense to only one touchdown and two successful third-down conversions on 22 tries.

Dalton will not be expected to have all the answers for this struggling unit. But the 36-year-old and three-time Pro Bowler should carry in a bit of confidence under center, something that spot had been lacking with Young.

In addition to some knowhow and conviction, Dalton should also bring the deep ball back to the Carolina offense.

That too has been an element the Panthers were deprived of under Young—who averaged under three passing attempts of at least 20 yards downfield in his 18 career games. Dalton, in his lone start for the Panthers in 2023, threw seven such passes.

Opening up the field may help ignite a few pass catchers, including rookie Xavier Legette. The first-round pick, who was targeted zero times in last week’s 26-3 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, specifically made note of Dalton’s deep ball prowess on Thursday.

Hold ‘Em

Carolina’s defense had issues against the run even with a fully healthy lineup. Unfortunately, they’re not fully healthy anymore.

Not only will the Panthers continue to be without Pro Bowler Derrick Brown, but they could also be missing fellow starting defensive linemen A’Shawn Robinson (questionable) and Shy Tuttle (doubtful). This is not particularly great news for a group that allowed the second-most rushing yards (399) through Week 2.

They will, however, be facing the league’s least productive ground game in Las Vegas. The Raiders averaged just 49.0 rushing yards between their first two outings, 19 fewer yards than the next closest team.

So if the Panthers cannot stop that, then good luck from here on out.

Panthers Week 3 injury report: Starting DL Shy Tuttle doubtful vs. Raiders

The Panthers will likely be without another starting defensive lineman in Week 3.

The Carolina Panthers may have even more troubling defending the run.

Friday’s injury report for this weekend’s matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders lists starting nose tackle Shy Tuttle as doubtful. Tuttle missed the entire of week practice due to a foot injury.

If Tuttle is indeed out, the Panthers will be missing two of their three opening-day starters on the defensive line—as Pro Bowler Derrick Brown is already shut down for the remainder of the campaign due to a torn meniscus. Oh, and they could possibly be down all three, as A’Shawn Robinson has been deemed questionable with a knee issue.

Carolina is currently carrying three other defensive linemen on their active roster (Nick Thurman, LaBryan Ray and Jayden Peevy) and two on their practice squad (DeShawn Williams and T.J. Smith).

Here’s the team’s final injury report for Week 3:
