Sheymon Moraes felt he was fighting for his job vs. Marlon Moraes: ‘I thought maybe PFL kicked me out’

Sheymon Moraes felt the pressure entering the 2022 PFL Championships.

[autotag]Sheymon Moraes[/autotag] entered 2022 PFL Championships with a ton of pressure.

Sure, he wasn’t fighting for a belt and the $1 million prize that comes with winning a season, but with fighting former UFC title challenger Marlon Moraes on short notice, and coming off a loss, Sheymon (15-6) felt his spot on the PFL roster was on the line.

“I know if I lost, I thought maybe PFL kicked me out, and I don’t want to lose my job,” Sheymon told reporters at the post-fight news conference (via MMA Sucka). “Just two weeks for short notice, it was going to be very tough. Nobody, and you can ask anyone in the division, no one wanted to face Marlon Moraes with full camp and just having two weeks (to prepare).

[lawrence-related id=2600157,2600147]

Sheymon had a previous defeat to Marlon (23-11-1) back in 2015 at WSOF 22. Sheymon was submitted by his fellow Brazilian with a third-round rear-naked choke.

In their rematch, things looked tough for Sheymon. He was down on the scorecards entering the final round, but he was able to pull off a comeback and score a TKO.

“I know I was losing the fight, but I just kept calm, and I know I just needed to connect a couple of hands to win the fight,” Sheymon said. “So I controlled myself, controlled my mental. When the second round finished, I said (to my coaches), ‘Don’t worry, I’m going to finish this guy right now. Watch, you’re going to see, I’m going to knock this guy right now.’ And I did.”

2022 PFL Championships video: Sheymon Moraes hands Marlon Moraes fifth straight TKO loss

Marlon Moraes has been knocked out in five straight fights, but also what a comeback by Sheymon Moraes.

The skid continues for [autotag]Marlon Moraes[/autotag], now across multiple promotions.

Pitched as a new beginning, his PFL debut had a similar end result to his final UFC bout. After two dominant rounds in his favor, Moraes (23-11-1) was finished by [autotag]Sheymon Moraes[/autotag] (15-6), who rallied for a TKO finish at the 0:58 mark of Round 3.

The featherweight fight took place as the featured prelim of 2022 PFL Championships, which took place Friday at Hulu Theater in New York.

The fight was a rematch of a bout between the two Moraes, which Marlon won in August 2015 under the World Series of Fighter banner.

Marlon utilized his grappling once again seven years later and found much success with his grappling. In brief exchanges on the feet, Marlon looked a step ahead of Sheymon.

Likely down 2-0, Sheymon rallied in Round 3 with his boxing. Sheymon first dropped Marlon with an overhand right. Sheymon pounced as Marlon went for a leg lock. Marlon left himself open for hammerfists, which Sheymon rained down. Marlon tried to shift back to his feet, but Sheymon cranked him with another punch, which caused referee Bryan Miner to step in.

The loss for Marlon is his fifth in a row. All five have come by knockout. Following his final UFC fight in March, a knockout loss to Sond Yadong, Moraes announced his retirement. However, he resurfaced months later with PFL and moved up from bantamweight to featherweight.

Marlon Moraes gets new opponent for PFL debut after Shane Burgos’ withdrawal

Marlon Moraes has a new opponent.

[autotag]Marlon Moraes[/autotag] has a new name for his PFL debut.

The former UFC title challenger will take on [autotag]Sheymon Moraes[/autotag] in a rematch at the 2022 PFL Championships in New York on Nov. 25. This change comes after ex-UFC fighter Shane Burgos was forced to withdraw from the bout due to injury. The new matchup will still take place at 145 pounds.

PFL officially announced the news of the new bout on Monday evening on social media.

The pair fought seven years ago at WSOF 22. They competed for the WSOF bantamweight title, a fight in which Marlon came out the victor by third-round rear-naked choke.

Marlon (23-10-1), a former World Series of Fighting champion, is looking to bounce back from a four-fight losing streak, which marked the end of his UFC career. The Brazilian last recorded a win in December 2019 when he edged out Jose Aldo in a split decision at UFC 245.

On the other hand, Sheymon (14-6) is looking to bounce back from a unanimous decision loss to Lance Palmer back in June. The defeat snapped a three-fight winning streak for the former UFC fighter.

Brendan Loughnane folds Sheymon Moraes with brutal knockout punch in PFL 2021 season debut

A violent knockout capped off the 2021 PFL 1 preliminary card.

[autotag]Brendan Loughnane[/autotag] entered his first PFL season in a violent fashion.

At 2021 PFL 1 on Friday, Loughnane (20-3) brutally knocked out UFC alumnus [autotag]Sheymon Moraes[/autotag] in a brutal first-round flurry. The finish, which came 2:05 into the fight, earned him six points in his first regular-season appearance.

After initially getting floored, Moraes (11-5) worked his way back to his feet – but only remained there momentarily. Loughnane didn’t let the Brazilian fighter off the hook. Loughnane unloaded on Moraes with a barrage of punches. Moraes was unable to get off the cage and was eventually met by a violent right hand.

Check out the knockout in the video below:

With the victory, Loughnane remains undefeated in his PFL career. He signed with PFL after being passed over on Dana White’s Contender Series and promptly went 2-0 in the promotion in non-season bouts.

Moraes lost his PFL debut. His losing skid was extended to three.

2021 PFL 1 took place Friday at Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City, N.J. The main card aired on ESPN2 after prelims on ESPN+.
