Texas A&M senior Shemar Turner believes the Longhorns ‘game is just going to be different’

“I feel like that game is just going to be different. Being able to feel that environment before I get out of college is going to be great.”

The Lone Star Showdown is back on the gridiron later this year when Texas A&M hosts Texas at Kyle Field.

On Thursday at SEC media days in Dallas, Aggies senior defensive lineman Shemar Turner was asked about the highly anticipated matchup.

“You hear it definitely most from the fans. It is exciting. I’m ready to go in there and play a team like UT at the crib so it’s going to be pretty fun. We’re locked in and focused on just getting better everyday and working up until that point,” Turner foretold. “It’s going to be exciting. I’m not gonna lie, Aggieland is going to change. It’s always electric there but I feel like that game is just going to be different.

“Being able to feel that environment before I get out of college is going to be great, it’s going to be fun.”

Texas A&M plays the Longhorns on Nov. 30 in College Station.

Texas A&M S&C Tommy Moffitt is setting the tone early for Mike Elko

Coach Tommy Moffitt weight room mentality is helping Elko shape the Texas A&M football program into his image

Mike Elko has made several impressive hires in his first season as Texas A&M’s head football coach. The evidence is just how well they have recruited out of the transfer portal and the 2025 class, where they currently sit in the top 5 of the 247Sports rankings.

However, Elko is trying to build a specific culture at A&M that relies on toughness, accountability, and togetherness. A great place to cultivate and ingrain those traits in a program is the weight room. Elko eventuallyy strength and landed legendar conditioning guru Tommy Moffitt.

During this year’s SEC Media Days not only did the Texas A&M players have great things to say about Moffitt. LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier had this to say about how Moffitt helped him during this time with him.

“Coach Moffitt does an unbelievable job. … If he taught me anything, it was definitely mental toughness. Coach Moffitt, I love him to death, and I think he’s going to do a great job over at A&M.”

There is no doubt how much Coach Moffitt genuinely loves what he does and how infectious that mentality has spread throughout the team. In wrestling, there is a popular quote, “Embrace the Grind,” that they adopted because of the work ethic needed during the grueling workouts to survive on the wrestling mat.

Shemar Turner’s comments about the impact Moffitt is having on the team provide further proof that the football program is making leaps and bounds in a new direction, and they, too, are “Embracing the Grind.”

“…nobody’s dragging in the weightroom, nobody’s dragging on the field. Everybody is excited to go to work and hurt…literally”

While strength and conditioning are only one aspect of a great team they still have to show up on the field and execute.  However, the one thing this Mike Elko team will not be lacking is mental toughness and physicality, thanks to the Moffitt Method.

Texas A&M LB Taurean York is bigger, stronger, and ready to dominate in 2024

Year 2 for Taurean York could be his best yet

Before Jimbo Fisher’s dismissal, one of his final recruiting victories during his Texas A&M tenure was landing a commitment from former 2023 3-star linebacker Taurean York, one of the most underrated athletes in the cycle.

After earning the starting middle linebacker job during his freshman season, the Temple (TX) native took full advantage of his opportunity, showing flashes of brilliance while finishing with 74 tackles (38 solo tackles), three sacks, and a forced fumble on the year.

While the 2023 season was a disappointment, the defensive line showed promise, and heading into the 2024 campaign, York, along with former Pitt linebacker Solomon DeSheilds, has a chance to thrive behind what could be the best D-line in the SEC.

No matter how well he performed last season, York continues to fly under the national radar, but not with his team. Recognized as a 2024 team captain, York joined head coach Mike Elko, defensive tackle Shemar Turner, and left tackle Trey Zuhn III during last week’s SEC Media Days, providing insight into what we should expect this fall.

However, it wasn’t so much what York said compared to Turner’s quote regarding his teammate’s development this offseason, noting how York’s love for the game has accelerated his play at such a young age:

“The respect he’s gotten since he was a freshman is crazy. The way he approaches the game… He loves the sport of football.”

“Having a guy like that at that young of an age is crazy. He gained the respect of everyone quick.”

As the saying goes, “Respect is earned, not given,” York’s determined demeanor and intelligence are unmatched. At the same time, his offseason work under new strength & conditioning coach Tommy Moffit will likely produce a bigger and stronger player with the same speed and athleticism to stuff running holes and make his way into the backfield.

Adding five pounds of mass so far, York’s current 6’0″, 235-pound frame looks more than ready to take on the 2024 slate, starting with Notre Dame on Saturday, August 31.

Under Mike Elko, Texas A&M will have alot more quiet offseasons

The Mike Elko era is off to a solid start

The Jimbo Fisher era provided plenty of headaches for Texas A&M fans for five of his six seasons at the helm, while former athletic director Ross Bjork deserves plenty of blame for granting him a lengthy extension, resulting in Fisher’s now famous $76 million buyout after his dismissal last November.

After a decade of overhyped, loud, often ridiculous offseasons under Fisher and former head coach Kevin Sumlin before him, Bjork, before departing for Ohio State, made what will soon be considered his best hire in Mike Elko, who spent nearly four seasons as Texas A&M’s defensive coordinator (2018-2021).

It will obviously take a couple of years to accurately grade Elko’s success in College Station. His resume as a coordinator is now matched with his last two seasons in Durham, where he won 16 games and two bowl games while utilizing the transfer portal year after year.

Nationally, most college football analysts applaud Elko’s hiring and feel he is a perfect fit for a program needing a culture change post-Fisher. During this week’s SEC Media Days, every media member, including CBS Sports’ Shehan Jeyarajah, noticed the drastic change in Elko’s approach to previewing the 2024 season.

Stepping up to the podium for his first SEC Media Days appearance, Elko’s blue-collar, workman-like approach to the game has already made its mark, providing a realistic view of Texas A&M’s stagnant trajectory over the past two seasons after he left the program.

“We had to have some real, honest conversations when I took over about where we were as a program,” Elko stated. “We can’t verbalize what we are; facts tell us who we are. We were a 12-13 football program the last two years. The only way to change that is to work.”

He is returning to a roster that features several of his recruits from the Aggies’ historic 2022 recruiting class, led by redshirt sophomore quarterback Conner Weigman; he brings familiarity to his tactics, which were embraced by all three player representatives, including starting defensive tackle Shemar Turner:

That’s one thing that Coach Elko prides himself on: work,” Turner stated “If you work, he’s going to love you.”

As we have seen in years past from various programs, quiet offseasons usually breed in-season success as team unity is built in the weight room during the offseason, especially under new strength and condition coach Tommy Moffit. However, Elko knows that no matter how talented his team is on paper, the proof is in the pudding once they hit the ground running.

“You earn the right to have success in the game of football,” Elko stated. “I think that’s a recipe that has stood the test of time. The offseason is about being in places where nobody’s watching, where no one’s following you on Instagram, where nobody’s posting about what you’re doing. It’s about getting up every day and going to get better so you can have success in the fall.”

Something I stick to in my life is that any outside “noise” prevents us from reaching our daily goals of getting better at our chosen profession. Texas A&M will experience a plethora of highs and lows this coming season. Still, I can guarantee that under Elko’s guidance, a lack of discipline, toughness, and consistent work ethic will keep the Aggies in every game till the final whistle blows.

Texas A&M will kick off the 2024 season vs. Notre Dame in prime time on Saturday, August 31 at 6:30 p.m. CT.

View some of the best photos from Texas A&M players and Mike Elko at the SEC Media Day

The real countdown to Texas A&M vs Notre Dame has begun. Even though fall practice has not started yet SEC Media Days really gives fans early insight into the conference and their favorite teams. The Aggies were represented by Trey Zuhn, Taurean York, Shemar Turner, and Mike Elko.

The biggest takeaway from all of the player interviews was the sense of urgency and the heightened emphasis on accountability.

“We are going to be the most disciplined program and toughest program. Get to work every day, bust our butts… It will show up on the field.” – Zuhn

“Nobody is missing breakfast. Nobody is missing lunch. Nobody is missing dinner… If you love playing football, you love being coached hard.” – Turner

Another thing was A&M will be making a switch to a lunch pail mentality

“We had some real honest conversations about where we were as a program. We were a 12-13 football program the last two years. The only way to change that is to work.” – Elko

Texas A&M DL Shemar Turner has reportedly added 30 pounds this offseason

After adding 30 pounds this offseason, Texas A&M DL Shemar Turner is ready to make the full time switch to defensive tackle

Texas A&M is in the spotlight for the start of the final day of SEC Media Days, as head coach Mike Elko, alongside LB Taurean York, OL Taurean York, and DL Shemar Turner, joined him to provide a substantial preview of what’s to come this season.

While Elko’s return to College Station after serving as the program’s defensive coordinator from 2018-2021 took center stage, it was the news that junior defensive lineman Shemar Turner has reportedly gained 30 pounds this offseason after making the full-time switch to defensive tackle for the 2024 season.

Turner, who led the Aggies for the first half of the 2023 season in sacks and pressures, ended the year with 33 tackles and six sacks after playing at 3-tech and defensive end, but after receiving sound advice from his coaching staff regarding his NFL future, especially Mike Elko:

“I think a big piece of that was the intention when we recruited him. We felt that was probably his best position moving forward to the next level,” Elko stated. “That was a big piece of his decision to come back was being able to slide inside. … I think he’s going to have a phenomenal year this year in there.”

Already possessing the strength, hand placement, and high motor to get to the backfield consistently, Turner also stated in an interview that working on double teams has been the biggest change. Still, he expects the switch to work in his favor.

Even with the 30 extra pounds, Turner is looking slimmer than we expected. All thanks go to new strength and conditioning coach Tommy Moffit, whom Turner continued to praise on the afternoon.

‘I really earned it,’ Texas A&M LB Taurean York shares reaction to SEC Media Days invite

“I really feel like it was a blessing because I know that I really earned it. I know that I came from a 3-star and not many people knew me.”

In a recent interview with TexAgs, Texas A&M sophomore linebacker Taurean York shared his reaction to finding out that he’d be attending SEC Football Media Days in Dallas next week.

“I really feel like it was a blessing because I know that I really earned it. I know that I came from a 3-star and not too many people knew me whenever I signed here. But I think it’s a blessing just to have the ability to represent my teammates and that my teammates and my coaching staff feels like I’m capable and applicable to represent them at media day,” York explained. “We’re here to stay and we’re here to prove a point. Really, I feel like we have a lot of experience. We got coach Elko, obviously he’s a brilliant defensive mind but he’s a great head coach as well. He breaks us down how to win the game. Coach Moffitt has championship experience.

“So those two combined, I like our chances this year.”

York will be joined by teammates, senior defensive lineman Shemar Turner and junior offensive lineman Trey Zuhn III.

Texas A&M’s SEC media days representatives have been revealed

Mike Elko will be joined by three starters during next week’s SEC media days event

Next week, SEC media days will head to downtown Dallas, Texas, inside the Omni Hotel for the first time in the annual event’s history. To officially kick off the 2024 season, all 16 SEC head coaches will be accompanied by three players of their choosing.

After two years as Duke’s head coach and three years as Texas A&M’s defensive coordinator, the prodigal son, Mike Elko, has returned to College Station. His return brings a wave of nostalgia and hope, as he now has the chance to cement himself as an instant success after inheriting a talented and experienced roster.

As the second to last speaker on Thursday night, Elko will be accompanied by three starters on offense and defense, as starting left tackle Trey Zuhn III, starting middle linebacker Taurean York, and starting defensive end Shemar Turner will also make the trip to Dallas.

As the 2024 season nears, expectations have continued to mount after the Aggie’s successful transfer portal haul, while starting quarterback Conner Weigman is finally healthy and ready to get back to work after missing the final eight games of the 2023 season.

As four coaches will speak daily, SEC media days will take place from Monday, July 15, to Thursday, July 18.

Texas A&M DL Shemar Stewart is poised to break out this season

Texas A&M junior DL Shemar Stewart has a chance to explode on the scene with a new scheme in place

Texas A&M’s 2024 season is less than two months away, as the season opener vs. Notre Dame looms large ahead of head coach Mike Elko’s inaugural campaign.

As the offseason draws to a close, it’s worth noting the significant changes in the team’s roster. Since his official hiring in late November, Elko has bolstered the team’s strength by securing commitments from key 2024 prospects, including five-star athlete Terry Bussey. Additionally, the team has gained nearly 30 veterans from the transfer portal, led by former Purdue Edge Nic Scourton, who topped the Big Ten in sacks (10) last season.

Returning most of the 2023 roster, redshirt sophomore quarterback Conner Weigman’s return from injury is, and will continue to be, the storyline that dominates the mainstream coverage concerning the program. However, several returning defenders have a chance to dominate the SEC.

If A&M’s offensive line holds up, the Aggie’s offense should improve, but if not, it will be up to the defense to keep games close. In the trenches, Scourton is joined by senior defensive lineman Shemar Turner, who’s as dependable as they come. Still, his name twin, edge/defensive lineman Shemar Stewart, has a chance to put up double-digit sacks after his continued developments over the past two seasons.

While his recent film is filled with “splash plays,” Good Bull Hunting contributor Will Stone referenced Stewart’s potential with tape from Texas A&M’s season finale loss to LSU last season. The incoming junior’s 6’6″, 285-pound frame, paired with his elite athleticism, jumped off the screen after several pass rush reps.

As Stone pointed out, Stewart was just inches away from finishing with a sack against LSU tackles Will Campbell and Emery Jones, who are both slated to end up going in the first round of the NFL Draft.

Without getting too technical, Elko’s use of split fronts in 3rd down situations, which essentially shows a heavier pass rush on one side of the LOS while loading up outside pass rushers against the right or left tackle, was extremely successful during his time as A&M’s defensive coordinator (2018-2021) and will open things up for Stewart to overpower his blocker on a consistent basis easily.

Texas A&M will open the 2024 season vs. Notre Dame on Saturday, August 31, at 6:30 p.m. CT. The game will air on ABC.

Multiple Aggies selected in in first round of CBS Sports’ ‘way-too-early’ 2025 NFL Mock Draft

Noah Thomas, Shemar Turner projected as 2025 first-round picks in CBS Sports’ “way-too-early” 2025 mock draft

The 2024 NFL Draft has concluded, and for Texas A&M, four players were selected, led by star linebacker Edgerrin Cooper with the 45th overall pick in the second round, now headed to the Green Bay Packers after three seasons in College Station.

Joining Cooper, defensive lineman McKinnley Jackson (Cincinnati Bengals), offensive lineman Layden Robinson (New England Patriots), and wide receiver Ainias Smith (Philadelphia Eagles) were all selected in the third, fourth, and fifth rounds, respectfully.

With the Jimbo Fisher era officially in the rearview mirror, new Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko is equipped with a bevy of talent on both sides of the ball heading into his inaugural 2024 season. Starting quarterback Conner Weigman is leading the way after sustaining a season-ending injury after just four games last season.

According to CBS Sports’ latest early 2025 NFL mock draft, junior wide receiver Noah Thomas and junior defensive lineman Shemar Turner have received projections to be selected in the middle and end of the first round next April, and based on traits alone, this shouldn’t be a surprise.

With the 15th-overall pick to the Chicago Bears, a franchise that recently selected WR Rome Odunze with the 9th overall within this year’s draft is still in need of a consistent red zone target, as Thomas’s 6-6 200-pound frame and large catch radius make him an instant threat on the boundary. During his 2023 sophomore season, Thomas recorded 29 receptions, 359 receiving yards and five touchdowns.

With the 29th-overall pick to the Detroit Lions, head coach Dan Campbell is an Aggie through and through and will be keeping an eye on Turner’s final season at Texas A&M as the versatile defensive lineman is coming off his best collegiate season yet after recording six sacks, 10.5 tackles for loss and two force fumbles in 2023.
