San Jose Sharks at Colorado Avalanche odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Thursday’s San Jose Sharks at Colorado Avalanche odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The San Jose Sharks (29-29-8) continue their road trip with a stop in the Mile High City to face the Colorado Avalanche (47-14-6) Thursday at Ball Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we look at the Sharks vs. Avalanche odds and lines, and make our expert NHL picks, predictions and bets.

The Sharks would like to forget what happened Wednesday night as they were chased out of Arizona, 5-2, by the last-place Coyotes. San Jose has now traded wins and losses in the last four games, and they’re 5-4-1 in the last 10.

The Avalanche keep rolling despite injuries starting to pile up. Already down LW Gabriel Landeskog, C Nathan MacKinnon gave them a scare after he appeared injured in a fight a couple of nights ago. He has been given the green light to return. The Avs are 6-3-1 in the last 10 and are coming off a 2-1 thriller against the Calgary Flames.

Sharks at Avalanche odds, spread and lines

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated at 4:12 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Sharks +280 (bet $100 to win $280) | Avalanche -370 (bet $370 to win $100)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Sharks +1.5 (+100) | Avalanche -1.5 (-125)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 6.5 (O: +105 | U: -130)

Sharks at Avalanche projected goalies

Kaapo Kahkonen (12-9-3, 2.92 GAA, .910 SV%) vs. Pavel Francouz (12-3-1, 2.53 GAA, .918 SV%, 2 SO)

Kahkonen has five starts this month, and he lost all of them. The 25-year-old Finn gave up four goals in four of the five. He was solid in a 4-3 shootout loss to the Avs earlier this year when he stopped 35 of 38 shots. He was playing more often then, though, as he was in a strong January with a 2.33 GAA. He has regressed since.

Francouz may be the best backup in the league. He has been a little more beatable, though, with three goals allowed in three straight. He gave up three to these Sharks on March 18 while making 25 saves in a 5-3 win.

Sharks at Avalanche odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Avalanche 5, Sharks 2

Money line

PASS.

It’s rare you’ll place a money-line wager in an Avs game unless it’s an underdog against them. The Sharks are not that team. PASS.

Against the spread

The Avs have have been a bit better on the puck line recently. They have six wins in the last 10, and four of them have been by two goals or more.

The Sharks have scored 3.0 goals per game over the last 10, but they’ve faced some weaker teams in there. They’re not that good offensively, and that’s going to be something they’ll need to address in the offseason to get back into the playoff picture. Colorado has only scored 2.8 goals per game over the last 10, but they have had a lot of premium players in and out. They get one back Wednesday.

This is a prime spot and a good price for them to break out. Take the AVALANCHE -1.5 (-125) for a full unit.

Over/Under

Colorado is just 3-7 on the Over in the last 10 games as they have been struggling with injuries. Meanwhile, the Sharks are putting up three goals per game in that stretch. The Over is 4-1-1 in the Sharks’ last six games and the Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings with these two teams. In a game featuring backup goalies, this one should be fast and furious. Let’s use the recent Under trend to our advantage at plus-money.

LEAN to the OVER 6.5 (+105).

San Jose Sharks at Colorado Avalanche odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s San Jose Sharks at Colorado Avalanche odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The San Jose Sharks (20-25-5) play the second of a two-game set with the Colorado Avalanche (32-12-4) Saturday with an 8 p.m. ET puck drop at Ball Arena. Below, we analyze the Sharks-Avalanche odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Sharks were on the short end of a 3-0 loss in Colorado in the first of two games in Denver, and the first of four straight games between these teams overall. It splashed cold water on their momentum after a two-game sweep of the Arizona Coyotes at home from April 26-28.

The Avalanche stopped a three-game slide, as goaltender Philipp Grubauer returned from the COVID list and posted a shutout. He had missed the previous five outings, going 2-3 in his absence.

  • Money line: Sharks +230 (bet $100 to win $230) | Avalanche -275 (bet $275 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Sharks +1.5 (-105) | Avalanche -1.5 (-115)
  • Over/Under: 6 (O: -120 | U: +100)

Sharks at Avalanche: Projected starting goalies

Josef Korenar (2-3-0, 3.03 GAA, .893 SV%) vs. Devan Dubnyk (5-11-2, 3.21 GAA, .896 SV%, 1 SO)

After losing his first two NHL starts, Korenar has picked up back-to-back victories in each of his past two outings. He has allowed six goals on 55 shots in a pair of wins against the Arizona Coyotes.

Dubnyk won his first two starts for the Avalanche in place of the absence of Grubauer, but he has coughed up eight goals over the past two outings for a pair of losses. He was acquired from the San Jose Sharks in early April, now he’ll get a chance to face his former organization.

Sharks at Avalanche: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Avalanche 5, Sharks 2

Money line (ML)

The Avalanche (-275) will cost you nearly three times your potential return, and that’s just too much risk despite the high probability of another victory over the skidding Sharks (+230).

AVOID.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The AVALANCHE -1.5 (-115) are worth a look at this much more affordable price.

They covered the puck line in the 3-0 win against the Sharks +1.5 (-105) in the series opener, and Colorado has won by two or more goals in five of their past six victories against San Jose.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 6 (-120) didn’t come close in Friday’s opener, but the Sharks should have a lot more success on offense against Dubnyk. The Over is 4-1 in San Jose’s past five games and 6-2 in their past eight against winning teams.

The Over is also 4-1-1 in Colorado’s past six while hitting in five of their past six when playing in the second game of a back-to-back.

San Jose Sharks at Colorado Avalanche odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Thursday’s San Jose Sharks at Colorado Avalanche NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The San Jose Sharks (3-4-0) travel to meet the Colorado Avalanche (4-3-0) at Ball Arena Thursday for a 9 p.m. ET puck drop. Below, we analyze the Sharks-Avalanche NHL odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Sharks at Avalanche: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 3:56 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Sharks +210 (bet $100 to win $210) | Avalanche -250 (bet $250 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Sharks +1.5 (-130) | Avalanche -1.5 (+105)
  • Over/Under: 6.5 (O: +100 | U: -120)

Sharks at Avalanche: Projected starting goalies

Devan Dubnyk (0-2-0, 3.29 GAA, .894 SV%) at Philipp Grubauer (4-2-0, 2.17 GAA, .919 SV%)

Dubnyk is likely to be tabbed for the start after G Martin Jones was pounded for five goals on just 19 shots before getting pulled early in the second period of Tuesday’s 7-3 loss in the front end of this back-to-back set. Dubnyk came on and yielded two goals on 23 shots in his 34:12 of action.

Grubauer turned aside 27 of the 30 Sharks shots he faced, and he received all the offensive support he could possibly need. He has allowed three or fewer goals in each of his past five starts since a setback in the opener against the St. Louis Blues Jan. 13 when he coughed up four goals.

Sharks at Avalanche: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Avalanche 5, Sharks 2

Money line (ML)

The Avalanche (-250) laying this kind of number is just too much, even though they’re a good bet to win. Look to the puck line instead for a much better value. PASS.

Against the spread (ATS)

The AVALANCHE -1.5 (+105) at near even-money is a much better play than risking two and a half times your return on the money line. While Colorado has covered the puck line in just two of its four wins to date, one of those covers came in Tuesday’s 7-3 win vs. the Sharks.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 6.5 (+100) is the lean, although play it lightly. Grubauer hasn’t been in a very giving mood, so Colorado will have to do the heavy lifting. While the Avs broke out for seven goals Tuesday, they have scored three or fewer in five of their seven games overall. The good news is that the Over is 7-3-1 in the past 11 meetings in Colorado, and 19-7-3 in the past 29 overall in this series.

San Jose Sharks at Colorado Avalanche odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Tuesday’s San Jose Sharks at Colorado Avalanche NHL betting odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The San Jose Sharks (3-3-0) visit the Colorado Avalanche (3-3-0) Tuesday at Ball Arena for a 9 p.m. ET puck drop. Below, we analyze the Sharks-Avalanche odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Sharks at Avalanche: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 7 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Sharks +185 (bet $100 to win $185) | Avalanche -225 (bet $225 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Sharks +1.5 (-150) | Avalanche -1.5 (+125)
  • Over/Under: 6 (O: -120 | U: +100)

Sharks at Avalanche: Projected starting goalies

Martin Jones (3-1-0, 3.06 GAA, .894 SV%) at Philipp Grubauer (3-2-0, 2.01 GAA, .923 SV%, 1 SO)

Jones has posted three victories in four outings, but offensive support has been the name of the game. He has allowed three or more goals in three of his outings. The good news is that he has picked up two victories in two shootouts, standing tall in the extra sessions.

Grubauer started off shaky with four goals allowed on 32 shots in an opening-season loss to the St. Louis Blues Jan. 13. Since then, he has coughed up just six total goals in four starts. His only loss during the span was last time out against the Anaheim Ducks, surrendering two goals on just 14 shots a 3-1 setback Sunday.

Sharks at Avalanche: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Avalanche 5, Sharks 3

Money line (ML)

The Avalanche (-225) will cost you more than two times your potential return on home ice, and that’s not a good long-term betting strategy. AVOID and look to the puck line instead.

Against the spread (ATS)

COLORADO -1.5 (+125) is a good bet on home ice. Sure, only one of Jones’ three victories covered the puck line, but he is due. Jones has been very giving, and Colorado will get to him for several goals. The Sharks have struggled in Denver, winning just twice in the past seven tries, and the home team is 37-14 in the previous 51 meetings.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 6 (-120) is generally the rule when these teams hook up, going 18-7-3 in the past 28 meetings. In addition, the Over has hit in four of six for the Sharks, while going 1-1 in two home games for the Avalanche. Colorado has actually had some difficulty finding the back of the net, which is surprising given its depth up front. Eventually the Avs will break out, and I think they have a good chance to score plenty against Jones.
