Philadelphia Eagles to sign DE Shareef Miller to their practice squad

Shareef Miller signing to the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad

The Eagles are set to bring a hometown kid back home, as Tom Pelissero is reporting that former Penn State star pass rusher, Shareef Miller is set to sign with Philadelphia’s practice squad.

Miller was a fourth-round pick of Philadelphia during the 2019 NFL Draft but was waived by the Eagles prior to the start of the regular season and picked up by the Panthers.

The Panthers waived Miller after he was inactive for each of the first three games this season to clear roster space for Eli Apple’s (ankle/foot) return to the lineup.

Panthers claim 2 former Eagles off waivers plus OT Trenton Scott

The Panthers have claimed three players off waivers following yesterday’s roster cutdowns to 53 men for the regular season.

The Panthers have claimed three players off waivers following yesterday’s roster cutdowns to 53 men for the regular season.

According to Tom Pelissero at NFL Network, that includes former Eagles cornerback Rasul Douglas, his Philadelphia teammate defensive end Shareef Miller and former Chargers offensive tackle Trenton Scott.

Douglas (6-foot-2, 209 pounds) is the biggest name of the group. He was picked in the third round of the 2017 draft by the Eagles. Douglas played 46 games, totaling five interceptions, 25 pass breakups and nine tackles for a loss. He will likely compete for the opportunity to start outside opposite Donte Jackson.

Miller (6-foot-4, 254 pounds) was a fourth-round pick by Philly last year. He was essentially red-shirted his rookie season.

Scott (6-foot-5, 320 pounds) brings familiarty with former Chargers offensive line coach Pat Meyer, who is now filling that role in Carolina. To keep his spot Scott will need to work on reducing his penalties. Last season, he committed eight, including four false starts.

At least in theory, Douglas helps fill the team’s glaring hole at cornerback. They still need another tight end, so expect more moves to come.

Update:

The Panthers have released offensive tackle Matt Kaskey, which opens up a spot for Scott.

If they plan to cut players from the same positions to make room for the others, then the two most likely candidates are rookie cornerback Stantley Thomas-Oliver and defensive end Marquis Haynes.

The Philadelphia Eagles reduced their roster to 53 players on Saturday and among the cuts were Rasul Douglas and second-year player Shareef Miller.

According to the NFL waiver wire, both players landed on their feet, as the Carolina Panthers claimed both Douglas and Miller.

Originally selected by the Eagles in the fourth round (138th overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft, Shareef Miller was one of the most productive defensive ends in the Big Ten during his three seasons at Penn State.

A 3rd-round pick from West Virginia, Douglas played in 46 games with 18 starts for the Eagles and could find a role in Carolina.

The Philadelphia Eagles are moving on from 2019 fourth-round pick Shareef Miller, as Ian Rapoport is reporting that the Birds will release the former Penn State defensive end.

Originally selected by the Eagles in the fourth round (138th overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft, Shareef Miller was one of the most productive defensive ends in the Big Ten during his three seasons at Penn State.

That production has yet to translate to the NFL and Miller will move on.

Eagles 2019 rookie class ranked among the worst in NFL by ESPN

Eagles rookie class ranked the No. 25 most productive by ESPN

The Philadelphia Eagles have 10 picks in the 2020 NFL Draft, but if they can’t improve on their ability to judge collegiate talent, then the wheeling and dealing will be all for naught.

Pro Football Focus and ESPN teamed up to grade the 2019 rookie class from all 32 NFL teams utilizing wins above replacement metric (PFF WAR) to rank all 32 teams.

Not surprisingly, with Miles Sanders as the only rookie on the roster to flourish week in and week out, the Eagles rookie class was ranked 25th out of 32 teams.

25. Philadelphia Eagles
Why they’re ranked here: The Eagles drafted two players in the first two rounds (offensive tackle Andre Dillard and wide receiver J.J. Arcega-Whiteside) who added negative wins above replacement values. That isn’t great. Arcega-Whiteside was especially disappointing, earning targets on a higher percentage of his routes than only Andre Patton of the Chargers. All the opportunity was there to take advantage of a larger role with the offense’s injuries, but it never materialized.

How their top pick fared: Dillard (No. 22 overall) was limited to reserve work when Jason Peters or Lane Johnson went down because of injury, and that was a good thing for Carson Wentz based on how he graded. He allowed a pressure rate of 14.7%, higher than any other tackle in the NFL.

Best value pick: Running back Miles Sanders (No. 53 overall) still has some work to do as a runner, but he has already shown that he can be a positive in the passing game out of the backfield. He led a depleted Eagles’ roster with 165 receiving yards on passes 20 or more yards downfield.

The Eagles had five picks in the 2019 NFL Draft, with only Dillard and Sanders showing flashes of future greatness.

ROUND/PICK NAME POS
1/22 Andre Dillard OT
2/53 Miles Sanders RB
2/57 JJ Arcega-Whiteside
4/138 Shareef Miller DE
5/167 Clayton Thorson QB

Arcega-Whiteside’s inability to muster any production was alarming and the biggest disappointment of the draft class, especially when the Redskins, 49ers, Seahawks, and Titans all had guys picked after the Eagles rookie, have super successful seasons.

Shareef Miller worked through a professional redshirt season and will look to find a place in the Eagles defensive end rotations next season.

Clayton Thorson was unable to grasp Doug Pederson’s offense and ultimately landed on the Dallas Cowboys practice squad.

My Cause, My Cleats: Eagles Shareef Miller using his platform to help end ‘Gun Violence’

Eagles’ Shareef Miller using his platform to help end ‘Gun Violence’

As part of the collaboration between the NFL and players, players from around the league will represent hundreds of charitable organizations that focus on amazing causes.

For Eagles rookie and Philly native Shareef Miller, “MY Cause, My Cleats” will take on a significant meaning this season, as he looks to raise awareness for gun violence.

The sorrow that comes from senseless gun violence and shooting hits close to home for Miller, who had to deal with his brother, Mikal, being shot and killed in 2015 right before the talented defensive end was set to leave for Penn State.

On Sunday Miller will wear a special pair of custom cleats, with his brother’s face on them and a message that states, “We Can End Gun Violence.”

He posted a photo of the cleats to his Instagram page.

At the NovaCare Complex on Friday, Miller gave more insight into his cause while speaking with ABCs Jeff Skversky.

Miller has only been active one time this season, against the Buffalo Bills back in Week 8.
