Former UNC basketball guard joins University of Denver coaching staff

Here is where former UNC basketball guard Shammond Williams is coaching at next.

Former North Carolina Tar Heels guard Shammond Williams has a new gig in college basketball.

Williams has joined the University of Denver’s coaching staff, as an assistant coach. Head coach Jeff Wulbrun made the announcement Wednesday morning of the latest addition to his staff.

Williams spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach on Old Dominion women’s basketball coaching staff under the direction of DeLisa Milton-Jones. He also spent time coaching at Furman (2012-13), Tulane (2013-16) and Western Kentucky (2016-17).

He released this statement on being hired:

“I am extremely excited, about having the opportunity to represent the University of Denver and Head Coach Jeff Wulbrun.,” Williams said.  “Coach Wulbrun is a great coach but an even better person, and the coaching world knows it. Jeff, cares about his players and staff, and a well respected coach in our profession. I’m blessed to have been able to work for an awesome individual in Delisha Milton Jones, and transition to another in Jeff Wulbrun. My family and I are eager to come back to the Mile High City and represent The University of Denver and Pioneer family. “

As a guard, Williams played four seasons at North Carolina appearing in 134 games and helping lead the Tar Heels to three Final Four appearances. From there, he played 13 seasons professionally including time in the NBA.

Former UNC basketball star visits with Tar Heels after win over NC State

Former UNC basketball great Shammond Williams visited with the Tar Heels after beating NC State on Saturday.

During Saturday’s win over NC State in the Dean Dome, point guard Elliot Cadeau showcased his true point guard abilities. Cadeau had a big game, scoring 16 points and dishing out 7 assists, making a few splash plays.

Throughout the year we’ve been able to see Cadeau flash his skillset but Saturday’s game was one of his better ones. And it was with a former Tar Heel great in attendance.

Among the players that were at North Carolina’s win over NC State was Shammond Williams, a guard who spent four seasons with the program during the 90’s.  Following the game, Williams was photographed on the court meeting with another guard, Seth Trimble:

That’s a pretty cool moment.

Williams has been back at UNC numerous times since his career and taking the time to talk to a young player like Trimble and Cadeau after the game is pretty damn sweet. The ‘Family’ aspect at North Carolina is real and with this team moving forward into the ACC and NCAA Tournaments, learning from guys like this is important too.

This team is a talented one and getting this advice could help down the stretch.

Top 10 scoring games in UNC basketball history

There were a ton of high-scoring players in the 20th century for UNC basketball. We go into brief detail about the Top 10 here.

There’s been a lot of great scorers in the long, storied history of UNC basketball.

The most obvious name is Michael Jordan – the GOAT – who’s won both an NCAA Championship and multiple NBA titles. There’s also Coby White, who’s also carving a name for himself as another budding star with the Chicago Bulls, Joel Berry, Tyler Hansbrough, Justin Jackson and – most recently – current Tar Heel guard RJ Davis.

Oddly enough, none of the above players I mentioned have any of the Top-10, in-game scoring records. You’ll have to take a trip back to the 20th century to find those.

Luckily for you, we’re gonna talk about those players.

You recognize the names Bobby Lewis, Billy Cunningham, Lennie Rosenbluth, George Glamack, Charlie Scott or Shamond Williams? They all hold the in-game scoring records, spanning from the early 1940’s to the late 1990’s, but Rosenbluth was the only Top-10 in-game scorer to win a National Championship.

With the way Davis is currently playing, he could easily join the Top 10 scoring list. He’ll need to break into the 40’s – luckily for Davis, UNC has plenty of scorers on this year’s team.

As we still hold the Miami victory fresh in our minds, let’s take a trip back to the 20th century:

Every player in Boston Celtics history who wore No. 11

Today’s installment focuses on the 29 players who wore No. 11 over the years as of September 2023.

The Boston Celtics have more retired jerseys than any other team in the NBA, but that doesn’t mean the rest of their jerseys have little history of interest tied to them.

In fact, with 17 titles to their name and decades of competitive basketball played in them, their unretired jersey numbers pack in some of the most history not hanging from the rafters of any team in the league. To that end, we have launched our accounting of that history, with every player in every jersey worn by more than one Celtics player in the storied franchise’s history accounted for.

Today’s installment focuses on the 29 players who wore No. 11 over the years as of September 2023.
