Recruiting Story

Before he became a full-blown household name in the recruiting sphere, Earls was committed to South Carolina. However, it appeared as if he was looking at other options and Michigan appeared to have strong standing for him. However, Georgia pushed hard and he ended up committing to the Bulldogs. Michigan didn’t stop going after him and got him back on campus for the Michigan State game. Earls committed shortly after and became one of the Wolverines’ most avid recruiters in the aftermath.

Readiness Level

With Will Johnson gone, Michigan pitched Earls on being a potential first-year starter. Of course, others will vie for the job and there’s no telling what will transpire via the transfer portal, but he does have a path to seeing the field in year one.

Notes

  • Committed Nov. 1, 2024
  • Also runs track
  • Originally committed to South Carolina before flipping to Georgia and then Michigan.

Scouting report

The scouting report from 247Sports’ Andrew Ivins:

Imposing perimeter corner with the ideal blend of size and speed. Has made an impact in all three phases of the game since he was a sophomore in Virginia’s highest classification and has experience working in a variety of different coverages. Creates release disruption from press and does his best to mirror opponents as their routes progress. Alert when forward-facing, and will play through hands to break up passes, but needs to improve overall awareness when his back is turned to the football. Can get across the field with his top gear and prevent touchdowns while in pursuit. Low-tackling style gets the job done, but will only add more value in run support if he can shed with more authority. Should be viewed as a potential multi-year starter at the Power Four level with legitimate NFL upside. Frame hasn’t been third-party verified, but appears to be over 6-foot. More notably, owns elite markers in both the 55-meter dash and the long jump. Likely will need a developmental year or two to adjust to the collegiate game and refine technique, but could be well worth the wait.

4-star CB flips from Georgia to Michigan

Georgia is down to one cornerback commitment after losing their top previous cornerback commitment to Michigan

Four-star cornerback recruit Shamari Earls has flipped his his commitment from the Georgia Bulldogs to the Michigan Wolverines. Earls was Georgia’s top ranked defensive back commitment in the class of 2025.

In response to Earls’ decision, the Bulldogs are already making moves to try to flip one of Auburn’s top cornerback commitments. Now, Georgia has only 23 commitments in the class of 2025. The Bulldogs maintain the third-best recruiting class in the country.

“This decision comes down to personal reasons and finding the best possible fit for me both academically and athletically,” said Earls on his decision. The talented defensive back previously flipped to the Bulldogs in July from SEC rival South Carolina.

Earls is a 6-foot-2, 180-pound cornerback who plays at Thomas Dale High School in Chester, Virginia. Earls is the ninth-ranked cornerback in the country, the top-ranked player in Virginia, and the No. 67 prospect in the nation.

Earls stars in both high school football and track and field. The four-star plays both wide receiver and cornerback.

Kirby Smart and Georgia have a major need at cornerback in the 2025 recruiting cycle. UGA has just one commitment in four-star Jontae Gilbert. The Dawgs need to add another cornerback or two to their signing class before the early signing period.

Now this is the good stuff. #GoBlue

Michigan football might not be having the best season on the field, but it’s having a pretty good one off of it.

Recruiting was lagging for some time, especially as the Wolverines struggled on the field. However, recruiting results have picked up in a big way recently, starting with the commitment of five-star offensive tackle Andrew Babalola.

But Babalola wasn’t the only big name connected to the maize and blue this week. After losing the flip of former South Carolina commit Shamari Earls to Georgia, Michigan never stopped working him. For the Michigan State game, the 2025 Chester (Virginia) Thomas Dale cornerback made it back to The Big House, garnering predictions he would end up wearing a winged helmet once everything was said and done.

And that finally came to fruition, as Earls flipped again, this time from Georgia to Michigan football.

With Earls in the fold, despite Ivins’ evaluation, Michigan very well could have an immediate replacement for Will Johnson should he opt to go pro following his junior year.

Earls is the 18th commit for the Wolverines in the 2025 class and is the third cornerback commit. Four-stars Ivan Taylor and Jayden Sanders are already pledged.

Even Georgia insiders are predicting Shamari Earls to Michigan football

Buckle up! #GoBlue

Over the course of the past week, Michigan football recruiting has heated up in a big way, and it’s not solely relegated to the attention given to the courtship of five-star and No. 1 talent Bryce Underwood.

Despite seemingly being out of his recruitment for months after he committed to Georgia, the Wolverines kept pushing and pushing, and that resulted in a visit to Ann Arbor this past weekend by 2025 Chester (Va.) Thomas Dale four-star cornerback Shamari Earls.

Earls started getting predictions from Michigan insiders that he would end up flipping, but Georgia insiders remained confident he would remain in Athens. However, it appears their tone has changed.

Following the lead of The Michigan Insider’s Sam Webb and national analyst Brian Dohn on the 247Sports network, but Dawgs247 insider Benjamin Wolk also predicted a flip from the Bulldogs to the Wolverines.

There’s increasing optimism that Earls could flip sooner than later. We’ll see if that happens as soon as some believe or if he’ll kick the can down the road.

Four-star CB projects to flip again from UGA

One of the top cornerbacks in the nation is predicted to flip from the UGA to Michigan

Four-star cornerback recruit Shamari Earls is projected to flip his commitment from the Georgia Bulldogs to the Michigan Wolverines, per On3.

Earls is a 6-foot-2, 180-pound cornerback who plays at Thomas Dale High School in Chester, Virginia. The talented defensive back flipped to the Bulldogs in July from SEC rival South Carolina.

Now, Earls is expected to change his mind again. Earls is the ninth-ranked cornerback in the country and the top-ranked player in Virginia. The Thomas Dale standout is the No. 67 prospect in the nation.

Earls has starred in both football and track and field. The four-star plays both wide receiver and cornerback in high school. If he decommits, it would hurt Georgia significantly. Earls is Georgia’s top cornerback commitment in the class of 2025.

In fact, Georgia has just two cornerback commitments in the 2025 cycle: Earls and four-star Jontae Gilbert. The Dawgs would have to look to add another cornerback or two to their signing class before the early signing period. UGA currently has the No. 3 recruiting class in the nation.

Michigan football gets a prediction to flip an elite prospect from an SEC school

WHOA!!!! #GoBlue

You thought this was about Bryce Underwood, right? Well, it’s not about Bryce Underwood.

But there is another elite prospect who is committed to an SEC school who is strongly considering Michigan football, and it turns out, he might actually make the flip.

The Wolverines were in strong contention to flip 2025 Chester (Va.) Thomas Dale four-star cornerback Shamari Earls from South Carolina over the summer, but Georgia came in hot and heavy and he ended up committing to play for Kirby Smart in Athens. However, Michigan has stayed persistent, and now Earls isn’t only slated to take an official visit to Ann Arbor (subscription required) but 247Sports ‘The Michigan Insider’ and WTKA host Sam Webb has put in a prediction that Earls will flip to the maize and blue.

If Michigan can indeed flip Earls, that would be a shock to the system, given that these flips tend to go one way — the other way. And considering there’s smoke about the aforementioned Underwood, it appears that Michigan is potentially poised to close strong.

South Carolina’s top-rated commit flips to Georgia

One of the top cornerbacks in the nation confirmed his flip from South Carolina to the Georgia Bulldogs

The Georgia Bulldogs were a major winner in college football recruiting during the June and are now seeking to carry that momentum into July. According to a recruiting expert, Georgia may be well on their way to doing that in the form of flipping a commit from a rival school.

247Sports’ Benjamin Wolk has projected the Bulldogs to land Shamari Earls, a four-star cornerback who is currently committed to Shane Beamer and the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Earls is a 6-foot-2, 180-pound cornerback from Chester, Virginia, who has been committed to the Gamecocks since April. Earls recently visited Athens on June 21. Michigan has also been heavily involved in his recruitment. He is the eighth ranked cornerback in the country and the second ranked player in Virginia.

He has played as a two-way player, recording 25 tackles and three interceptions a season ago on the defensive side to go along with 715 yards and eight touchdowns as a receiver while also working as a return specialist.

Georgia does not currently have any defensive backs committed in the class of 2025. In addition to Earls, the Bulldogs have recently been linked to four-star safeties Jaylan Morgan and Rashad Johnson.
