Arkansas Football: Preseason Depth Chart – Tight Ends

The Arkansas tight end room is short on experience, but has an abundance of potential. Here’s what the depth chart looks like ahead of week one.

Tight ends remain one of the biggest question marks for the Arkansas offense heading into their week one matchup with Western Carolina.

Over the summer, we looked at Arkansas’ tight ends groups and projected the depth chart ahead of fall camp. Now, with fall camp in the rearview mirror, the situation at the tight end is a little more clear for [autotag]Sam Pittman[/autotag] and new tight ends coach [autotag]Morgan Turner[/autotag].

As mentioned before, Turner brings an impressive resume with a proven track record of developing NFL-level tight ends, but will have quite the task in his first season at Arkansas.

The Razorback tight end room is short on experience this season, and Turner will need to rely on a handful of young guys in his first season with the Hogs. However, after fall camp, it’s easy to see that this young group has a lot of upside and potential.

Here’s what Arkansas’ tight end depth chart is looking like as we head the season.

Arkansas football: Offseason Depth Chart – Tight Ends

Arkansas’ tight ends are the least experienced group on the roster but have plenty of potential. Here’s how the depth chart looks for 2023.

[autotag]Arkansas football[/autotag]’s least experienced position group entering next season is, by far, tight end.

The tight end room was completely re-tooled in the offseason following Dowell Loggains’ exit to take the offensive coordinator position at South Carolina. Pittman swung for the fences by tabbing former Stanford tight end coach, [autotag]Morgan Turner[/autotag], to replace Loggains.

Turner brings an impressive resume with a proven track record of developing NFL-level tight ends, but will have quite the task in his first season at Arkansas.

The Razorbacks lost veteran tight end Trey Knox, who decided to follow Loggains to South Carolina following an impressive 2022 campaign. Without Knox, the Arkansas tight end room is short on experience. Turner will need to rely on a handful of talented, but severely inexperienced, guys in his first season with the Hogs.

Here’s what Arkansas’ tight end depth chart is looking like as we head into next season.

Var’Keyes Gumms de-commits from Arkansas football

Talented transfer tight end Var’Keyes Gumms has de-committed from Arkansas after choosing the Razorbacks nine days ago.

Sam Pittman and Arkansas football have lost their first transfer commitment of this off-season.

Talented North Texas transfer [autotag]Var’Keyes Gumms[/autotag] has officially de-committed from the Razorbacks, according to Chris Hummer of 247Sports.com. Gumms had previously chosen the Razorbacks over a plethora of interested schools on April 23.

Gumms was rated as a four-star transfer after an extremely successful first season at North Texas. He hauled in 34 catches for 458 yards and five touchdowns on his way to first team All-Conference-USA and second team Conference-USA All-Freshman honors.

With Gumms’ de-commitment Arkansas is back to having seven available scholarships to use for next year’s roster. Unless the Razorbacks add another tight end to the roster, it will be up to true freshmen [autotag]Luke Hasz[/autotag] and [autotag]Shamar Easter[/autotag] or redshirt freshman [autotag]Ty Washington[/autotag] to carry the load.

Arkansas’ 2023 recruiting class receives bump thanks to Singleton’s commitment

Malachi Singleton’s commitment to Arkansas football gives the Hogs a bump in recruiting rankings.

Arkansas found their missing piece to an already impressive recruiting class for the 2023 cycle when [autotag]Malachi Singleton[/autotag] announced his commitment on April 25.

Because of that, Arkansas’ recruiting class for 2023 has moved up a spot from No. 6 to No. 5 according to 247sports.

With Singleton’s commitment, Arkansas is now up to 11 pledges for the 2023 cycle, tied with Penn State for second-most in the top-25. Arkansas sits behind the Nittany Lions, Georgia, Texas Tech, and Notre Dame in the current top five.

Singleton, a four-star quarterback from North Cobb High School in Acworth, Ga., brings a dual threat attack to Arkansas. In his junior campaign, Singleton completed 166 passes for 2,316 yards and 24 touchdowns. He also scored 25 additional touchdowns on the ground, rushing for 1,018 yards.

Singleton becomes the fifth four-star recruit to commit to the 2023 class, joining tight end’s [autotag]Luke Hasz[/autotag], [autotag]Shamar Easter[/autotag], and [autotag]Jaden Hamm[/autotag], as well as offensive lineman [autotag]Luke Brown[/autotag].

Arkansas remains high in consensus recruiting rankings from On3

The 2023 recruiting cycle has been kind to Arkansas football thus far, how do they stack up among the nation’s top programs?

Arkansas football has hit the ground running when it comes to recruiting for the 2023 class.

Following a weekend filled with spring games and recruiting visits, Arkansas remains in the top-10 of On3’s consensus team recruiting rankings, checking in at No. 6.

Arkansas sits behind programs with new head coaches in USC and Notre Dame, as well as Penn State, Ohio State, and defending national champion, Georgia. The Razorbacks are the second highest-rated SEC team on this week’s list, ahead of Tennessee and Texas A&M in the top-25.

The Razorbacks sit at the No. 6 spot with a score of 90.246, and an average recruit ranking of 88.68. According to the site, [autotag]Luke Hasz[/autotag], who flipped his commitment to Arkansas from Oklahoma on January 22, continues to be the highest-rated commit of the class, as he ranks as the third-best prospect from the state of Oklahoma, and the No. 6 tight end in the country.

Jeremy Crabtree of On3 says that Arkansas is doing well in the early portion of the 2023 cycle, but feels that they need to land a key piece at one position.

Arkansas locked up in-state coveted recruit [autotag]Shamar Easter[/autotag] in August of last year and haven’t stopped with their momentum since. Hasz was previously committed to Oklahoma and is now ranked as a top-six player at his position. Four-star CB [autotag]Dallas Young[/autotag] was a good early get from Alabama. Now the Hogs are hunting for their quarterback of the class.

In the 2023 recruiting class, Arkansas has five four-star’s currently committed, as well as five three-stars. As far as quarterback offers are concerned, the Razorbacks have offered 18 at the position according to 247sports, including Jaden Rashada, the No. 5 quarterback in the nation, and current Oklahoma commit Jackson Arnold, who is a four-star signal caller from Denton, Texas.

Clemson ‘felt like home’ for one of nation’s top tight ends

One of the best tight end prospects in the country and a top-100 national prospect in the 2023 class checked out Clemson for the first time recently.

Ashdown (Ark.) High School four-star Shamar Easter visited campus in mid-June with his high school coach.

“I really liked it,” Easter told The Clemson Insider. “It felt like home.”

One thing that Easter saw while touring the campus and facilities stood out to him.

“The highlight was the backyard (to the Allen N. Reeves Football Complex),” he said.

While offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Tony Elliott and the majority of Clemson’s staff was on vacation when Easter was on campus, he got a tour from director of on-campus recruiting Ty Clements and has been in touch with Elliott over the phone.

The Tigers have yet to offer a tight end in the 2023 class, but they have let Easter know he is on their recruiting radar as they continue to evaluate him for a potential offer.

“They told me that they are looking at me,” Easter said, “and to keep them in contact.”

Auburn, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Penn State and Michigan State have all offered Easter this year, while Kansas and Arizona State gave Easter his first offers last year.

Clemson would catapult to the top of Easter’s list if the program enters the mix with an offer moving forward.

“They would be first or second,” he said.

A 6-foot-6, 215-pound rising junior, Easter is ranked as the No. 60 overall prospect in the 2023 class regardless of position by Rivals, while he checks in as the nation’s No. 6 tight end for the 2023 class according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
