ESPN basketball analyst visits Alabama basketball practice and raves about two players

ESPN College basketball analyst Seth Greenberg made a stop in Tuscaloosa to visit with Nate Oats’ squad.

On Wednesday, ESPN College Basketball analyst Seth Greenberg visited the Alabama basketball team’s practice. He tweeted about the pace at practice and mentioned two players in particular: Brandon Miller and Noah Clowney.

This doesn’t come as much of a surprise considering how well Miller and Clowney played in the tour overseas as well as in this weekend’s closed scrimmage against TCU. These two will likely be very instrumental to the team’s success this season.

Clowney possesses great length and size at 6-foot-10, 210 pounds. Head coach Nate Oats and the rest of the staff are expecting big things from the South Carolina native during his freshman campaign. When Greenberg spoke about Clowney, he said, “Noah Clowney is a big-time prospect. Clowney has great hands, a motor, and plays with an edge.”

Those are hefty compliments for an incoming freshman that hasn’t played up to this point. On the other hand, Greenberg went on to rave about McDonald’s All-American Brandon Miller. Greenberg compared Miller to Pelicans forward Brandon Ingram. Considering Ingram is one of the more elite forwards in the league should be a promising sign of Miller’s potential.

The Alabama basketball team will kick their season off on Nov. 7 against the Longwood Lancers. It will be interesting to see the role these two play and how they develop over the course of the season.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Alabama basketball news.

ESPN analyst Seth Greenberg: Isaac Okoro’s body ‘is NBA-ready’

Isaac Okoro finished second on the Tigers with 12.9 and 4.4 rebounds per game as a freshman.

With the 2020 NBA Draft coming ever closer, a lot of attention is being paid to former Auburn standout Isaac Okoro. Not only do the scouts like his game, some college basketball analysts are also fond of his ability.

“In the Kentucky game, [Okoro] was the most physically imposing player on the floor,’’ ESPN’s Seth Greenberg said. “He was tough to keep off the glass and out of the lane. His body is NBA-ready.”

In a NY Post article talking about the possibility of the one-and-done joining the New York Knicks, the praise continued.

“This draft [Okoro] gets consideration as high as No. 4,’’ one NBA personnel director told The Post. “He’s got NBA size, is an athlete with toughness and plays D. So he can get on the court fairly quickly. Coaches like that. After the top three, you can make a case for a lot of players.’’

Greenberg even went as far as comparing him to Toronto Raptors star Jaylen Brown.

“He’s a winner,’’ Greenberg told The Post. “He probably could defend 1-to-4 without an issue. He’s physically strong. He’s got a good floor game. You can post him up. He’s got some similarities to Jaylen. Physically strong, really defend and a toughness about him. High energy. Relentless work ethic. The thing I like the most is just his relentlessness.

“Jaylen Brown had the same question coming out of college, too, and he’s a good shooter now.”

Of course, Auburn coach Bruce Pearl knows what Okoro is able to do on the court after coaching him for one season and, after meeting with the Knicks organization, is confident in the team getting the right guy.

“They’ve done their homework on him,” Pearl told The Post recently. “I didn’t get a read on it, but they’ve done their due diligence.”

ESPN’s Seth Greenberg questions if LaMelo Ball is ‘a winning player’

LaMelo Ball will be one of the first names off the board in the 2020 NBA Draft but Seth Greenberg still has a big question about him.

One of the long-time mainstays in the college basketball landscape has been ESPN’s Seth Greenberg. Before serving as an analyst for the worldwide leader in sports, Greenberg was a long-time college basketball coach, most notably at Virginia Tech.

Few media figures, then, are more familiar with college players and prospects than Greenberg. When looking at the 2020 NBA Draft and specifically LaMelo Ball, Greenberg has one big, interesting question regarding the youngest Ball brother.

In an interview for MSG Network, Greenberg briefly discussed each of Ball, Anthony Edwards and James Wiseman while offering up a question on whether teams could win with Ball.

“He’s a really talented kid but there’s always an ‘if.’ Because is he going to be a winning player? He has incredible vision and great feel and legitimate size. But is he going to be a winning player? Who is going to guard? Does he understand what a good shot is and a bad shot is?”

The argument is another overused argument against Ball. There are plenty of valid arguments about Ball, mainly surrounding his inconsistent jumper or defensive acumen. Questioning if he can be a winning player when he won a state title in high school and did plenty of winning at SPIRE.

Regardless if Ball is considered a winning player, the Knicks still hold him in high regard as a prospect this season. The team has ranked him as the top point guard on their board from an early stage and has discussed multiple scenarios to trade up in the draft should they not land a top pick.

ESPN’s Seth Greenberg on LaMelo Ball: ‘His creativity is at another level’

ESPN college basketball analyst heeded a warning to NBA teams about drafting LaMelo Ball in the upcoming 2020 NBA Draft.

Many have criticized and broken down LaMelo Ball’s game not just over the last year but for essentially the entirety of his time in the spotlight at a very young age. But over the last year, specifically, as Ball has neared the 2020 NBA Draft, his game has gone under a larger microscope.

Everyone looking under the microscope may not always see the same thing. As appears to be the case with Seth Greenberg during an interview on Thursday with the New York Post.

Greenberg, a college basketball analyst for ESPN, was tasked with discussing the options at point guard available to the New York Knicks in the upcoming NBA Draft. Of a group at the top of the draft that includes LaMelo Ball, Cole Anthony, Tyrese Maxey, Tyrese Haliburton and Killian Hayes, Greenberg tabbed Haliburton as the best of the group.

When asked for his thoughts on Ball, Greenberg had the following to say:

“LaMelo is a freak with his size, vision and speed. But he doesn’t shoot it well and his decision-making is not great in terms of shot selection. His creativity is at another level.

“But I think LaMelo in New York would either be feast or famine. I’d only draft LaMelo in New York if there was a promise LaVar wouldn’t come with him. If you have a new Knick front office, do you want to deal with that? The second-guessing from a guy who doesn’t know what he doesn’t know. He’s a disaster.”

The on-court scouting report, while brief, is pretty spot-on for Ball. The off-court concerns, though, remain an easy excuse that isn’t how NBA teams view the situation. Neither the Pelicans nor the Lakers were scared off by LaVar when it came to Lonzo, nor were the countless teams linked to Lonzo in trade rumors.

Likewise, teams won’t be scared off drafting a player like LaMelo because of LaVar. And any team that might would have a front office opening or two once Ball flourishes.
