Sena Agbeko upsets Isaiah Steen by unanimous decision

Sena Agbeko upset Isaiah Steen by a unanimous decision Friday in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Sena Agbeko insisted going into his fight with favored Isaiah Steen on Friday in Atlantic City that he was a world class fighter and just needed the stage to demonstrate it.

The Ghanaian wasn’t all talk.

Agbeko, known more for his punching power than his technical ability, defeated Steen by a unanimous decision in a closely contested 10-round bout on “ShoBox: The New Generation”.

The official scores were 98-92, 97-93 and 96-94, all in favor of Agbeko (27-2, 21 KOs).

“To be able to show up and get this done, I’m very happy to get the vindication for all the hard work I’ve put into this sport,” said Agbeko, a 30-year-old based in Nashville.

“My biggest worry coming in on the B-side was that I was going to get robbed. He was better than I expected, and my goal was to just stay loose and let my hands go.”

Agbeko started and finished strong, winning the first three and final two rounds on all three cards. Steen (16-1, 12 KOs) had his most success in Rounds 4 through 8.

The judges evidently favored Agbeko’s aggression and power punching.

Steen, who boxed well, was surprised that he ended up on the wrong side of the decision.

“The scoring was messed up, for real,” Steen said. “He wasn’t going to touch me. I was throwing more jabs, connecting and landing more shots. I don’t see what the judges saw, but I definitely won that fight.

“They were scoring his blocks. His big punches were blocks and weren’t landing. When they said 98-92, I thought that was my score. He wasn’t touching me.”

Agbeko, who wasn’t ranked going into Friday’s fight, is now thinking big. He said after his victory that he’d like to face another boxer from Nashville.

“I want Caleb Plant! Caleb,” he said. “Let’s do it in Nashville. Let’s sell out Bridgestone Arena.”

Janelson Bocachica, Mark Reyes Jr. make weight for Wednesday fight

Welterweight prospects Janelson Bocachica and Mark Reyes Jr. on Tuesday made weight for their Wednesday night fight,

Janelson Bocachica and Mark Reyes Jr. are ready to roll in the ShoBox: The New Generation main event Wednesday in Uncasville, Conn.

The welterweight prospects both made weight Tuesday, with Bocachica coming in at 146.5 and Reyes at the limit of 147.

Bocachica (16-0, 11 KOs) made his ShoBox debut in October, when he stopped Nicklaus Flaz in the first round.

“My last fight on ShoBox, I feel like I surprised a lot of people,” the Detroit fighter said. “I wasn’t surprised myself because I know what I have to give. I showed my skills even though I could have done a little better, and that’s what I’m trying to do this fight.

“I won’t be satisfied until I get the WBC belt.”

Reyes (14-0, 12 KOs) is a big puncher from Tampa, Fla. He’s coming off a 47-second knockout of Diego Perez in November.

“This could definitely be a short fight,” he said. “It may not last long. But I can definitely say I’m prepared to go into the ninth and 10th round just as strong as I’m coming on in the first. But if the opportunity presents itself, there’s no reason to sit around and wait.

“If I hit anybody flush a few times, I don’t think many people are going to withstand that.”

Reyes understands the opportunity he has.

“I feel like winning this fight would be a push towards making a name for myself in the welterweight division,” he said. “It would definitely set me up for future fights and opportunities that I’ve been wanting and looking for.”

Both fighters will be taking part in their first scheduled 10-rounder.

In the co-feature, Vladimir Shishkin (11-0, 7 KOs) faces Sena Agbeko (23-1, 18 KOs) in a 10-round super middleweight matchup. Shishkin weighed 169, Agbeko 168.75.

And Alejandro Guerrero (12-0, 9 KOs) is scheduled to fight Abraham Montoya (19-2-1, 14 KOs) in an eight-round lightweight bout. They both weighed 135.
