Janelson Bocachica gets past Mark Reyes Jr. by majority decision

Welterweight prospect Janelson Bocachica got past Mark Reyes Jr. by a majority decision decision Wednesday in Uncasville, Conn.

Hot welterweight prospect Janelson Bocachica maintained his perfect record but he had to work for it.

Bocachica defeated fellow prospect Mark Reyes Jr. by a majority decision in a give-and-take 10-round bout Wednesday night at the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn.

Two judges had Bocachica winning (97-93 and 96-94) while the third had it a draw (95-95) in a fight that was difficult to score. Boxing Junkie scored it 96-94 for Bocachica.

The fighters, both known for their power, came out winging hard punches in a wild and entertaining first several rounds. Many of the shots – from both of them – were on the money but neither appeared to be hurt at any time.

They began to slow the pace in the fourth round, which turned out to benefit Bocachica (17-0, 11 KOs). The Detroit fighter used his long jab and outworked a suddenly inactive Reyes (14-1, 12 KOs) to control the middle rounds.

However, Reyes, from Tampa, Fla., rallied in the last few rounds by picking up his work rate and landing some eye-catching shots. Bocachica, apparently convinced the fight was in the bag, did little in the final round.

The fight was the first scheduled 10-round for both Bocachica and Reyes, who are 22 and 24, respectively.

In preliminary bouts, light heavyweight prospect Vladimir Shishkin (12-0, 7 KOs) of Russia defeated Sena Agbeko (23-2, 18 KOs) of Ghana by a wide unanimous decision in a 10-round bout.

And Abraham Montoya (20-2-1, 14 KOs) of Mexico defeated Alejandro Guerrero (12-1, 9 KOs) of Irving, Texas, by a majority decision in an eight-round

The welterweight prospects both made weight Tuesday, with Bocachica coming in at 146.5 and Reyes at the limit of 147.

Bocachica (16-0, 11 KOs) made his ShoBox debut in October, when he stopped Nicklaus Flaz in the first round.

“My last fight on ShoBox, I feel like I surprised a lot of people,” the Detroit fighter said. “I wasn’t surprised myself because I know what I have to give. I showed my skills even though I could have done a little better, and that’s what I’m trying to do this fight.

“I won’t be satisfied until I get the WBC belt.”

Reyes (14-0, 12 KOs) is a big puncher from Tampa, Fla. He’s coming off a 47-second knockout of Diego Perez in November.

“This could definitely be a short fight,” he said. “It may not last long. But I can definitely say I’m prepared to go into the ninth and 10th round just as strong as I’m coming on in the first. But if the opportunity presents itself, there’s no reason to sit around and wait.

“If I hit anybody flush a few times, I don’t think many people are going to withstand that.”

Reyes understands the opportunity he has.

“I feel like winning this fight would be a push towards making a name for myself in the welterweight division,” he said. “It would definitely set me up for future fights and opportunities that I’ve been wanting and looking for.”

Both fighters will be taking part in their first scheduled 10-rounder.

In the co-feature, Vladimir Shishkin (11-0, 7 KOs) faces Sena Agbeko (23-1, 18 KOs) in a 10-round super middleweight matchup. Shishkin weighed 169, Agbeko 168.75.

And Alejandro Guerrero (12-0, 9 KOs) is scheduled to fight Abraham Montoya (19-2-1, 14 KOs) in an eight-round lightweight bout. They both weighed 135.
