Orange County DA: Jimmy Graham will not be charged following Aug. arrest

The Orange County district attorney’s office says Jimmy Graham will not be charged following his Aug. arrest in Southern California:

This is good to see. Citing a statement from the Orange County district attorney’s office, ESPN’s Katherine Terrell reports that New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham will not be charged following his Aug. 18 arrest in Southern California due to a lack of sufficient evidence.

Graham was taken into custody on suspicion of being under the influence of narcotics and obstructing police, but he was later admitted to a local hospital and treated by Saints team doctors who believe he suffered a seizure. Graham was short on details when asked about the incident this week but says he wants to put it behind him and focus on football.

“Thanks for LAPD and just how quickly kind of everything went down and kind of how helpful they were through the process,” Graham said Thursday after practice. “Right now, we’re just dealing with that all personally.”

Hopefully Graham’s health is in a better place and he can go out and be a productive member of the team. Because the charges against him have been dropped it’s unlikely he’ll face any NFL discipline after the incident. That’s a relief for the Saints who are already down two players (Alvin Kamara, suspended three games; and Jake Haener, suspended six) with a third possibly joining them (Marcus Maye, who could receive a three-game suspension of his own). We’ll see if anything develops on this front.

Dennis Allen shares positive update on Jimmy Graham’s health

Jimmy Graham is expected to return to practice soon. This is much bigger than football and is a positive sign for his daily personal health | @southexclusives

The New Orleans Saints dealt with a scary situation last week when veteran tight end Jimmy Graham was briefly hospitalized in Los Angeles after experiencing a medical emergency, which team doctors believed to be a seizure. He’s since returned to New Orleans and undergone a battery of tests and evaluations to determine what happened to him and whether it could be a problem again.

It’s early, but Saints head coach Dennis Allen said Tuesday that Graham is trending in the right direction. He stood by the team’s initial statement but added some positive details on the plan for Graham in the final week of preseason.

“I expect to see Jimmy out here, hopefully tomorrow (at Wednesday’s practice),” Allen shared. “We’ll see. But I don’t think it’s going to be anything that’s going to cause him to miss any significant amount of time. I expect him to be out here practicing with us quickly.”

That is a best-case scenario, but even the worst case scenario doesn’t seem too far away either. Allen doesn’t think Graham’s medical issue will lead to him to missing a large amount of time.

Fans were, of course, excited about Graham’s return to the team he started his career with, so this comes as good news. His return to practice, however, would signify something even more important. Graham is physically improving and hopefully this episode won’t have any long-term impact. Seizures can happen once, but they also have the ability to be recurring.

Allen’s latest update is a sign that Graham’s medical testing yielded positive results. Graham wouldn’t be alone in the tight end room to defeat a medical emergency this offseason. If Graham is cleared to play, that should mean he shouldn’t be impacted by this issue in his personal life on a regular basis. That is the true win.

Saints say Jimmy Graham ‘experienced a medical episode’ in Los Angeles

TMZ first reported that Jimmy Graham was arrested Friday evening in Los Angeles, with the Saints saying team doctors believe he suffered a seizure that led to erratic behavior:

TMZ Sports first reported that New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham was arrested Friday evening in Los Angeles on a couple of misdemeanor charges — suspicion of being under the influence of a controlled substance, as well as as resisted, delaying, and obstructing a police officer, though he was later released from police custody and the incident is under investigation. TMZ sources with the Los Angeles police department say Graham was seen “walking in the streets” and resisted arrest.

Now we have word from the team, with the Saints saying in a statement Saturday morning that their team doctor believes Graham suffered a seizure which led to his erratic behavior:

“New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham experienced a medical episode last evening, which resulted in him becoming disoriented. He was taken into custody by local authorities and transported to a local hospital for evaluation for what Dr. John Amoss believes to be a likely seizure and spent the night under medical supervision and testing. Amoss met Graham at the hospital and is overseeing his care at this time. he was released this morning and is with the team as they continue preparations for Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers.”

We’ll watch out for updates on this front, but the most important thing is that Graham’s health has stabilized. Returning to football in humid New Orleans and Los Angeles after a year away from the game takes a toll on the body, and Graham has received frequent rest days throughout training camp to help him shoulder the workload. The 36-year-old doesn’t have a history of seizures so hopefully this was just a one-off for him.
