Persona 3 Anime Expo trailer highlights fresh English voice cast

Atlus debuted a new Persona 3 remake trailer during Anime Expo 2023, spotlighting the PS2 RPG’s new English voice cast

Atlus debuted a new Persona 3 Reload trailer during Anime Expo 2023, spotlighting the RPG’s new English voice cast and showing off more of the remake’s style, spruced up from its original days as a PS2 game. The trailer takes us to Iwatodai High School during the day and in the evening, along its cherry blossom-strewn front walk, and into the town’s main square, before briefly delving into Tartarus and its twisted nightmares.

The reworked dorm, school, and town look excellent, but Tartarus seems to benefit almost more than any other location. Its randomized floors tended to meld into a writing, same-y blur after a while in the original, but a host of new visual effects, including some eerie lighting on the darker floors and more detailed environments, seem like they bring a much-needed overhaul to the place you’ll be spending most of your time.

The new English cast is the main focus, though, and early indications are that they’ll do a brilliant job reinventing these roles.

  • Heather Gonzalez (Yukari Takeba)
  • Suzie Yeung (Fuuka Yamagishi)
  • Zeno Robinson (Junpei Iori)
  • Alejandro Saab (Akihiko Sanada)
  • Aleks Le (Protagonist)
  • Allegra Clark (Mitsuru Kirijo)

That still leaves Ken’s and Shinji’s voice actors – and new character models – yet to be revealed from the S.E.E.S crew, along with all the Social Link characters. Persona 3 Reload is due out sometime in early 2024 for Xbox, PS5, PS4, and PC. In a thematically appropriate move, Atlus promised more trailers and info drops at every month’s full moon, so we’ll be seeing a lot more Persona 3 remake before too long.

GoG is bundling some of the best PC games ever for under $35

GoG is hosting a substantial sale and discounting some of the best PC games around bundled together and even separately

GoG is hosting a substantial sale and discounting some of the best PC games around bundled together and even separately. You can grab the Yakuza: Complete Series bundle for just $33.92, which is seven meaty action games for less than the cost of a single Diablo 4 cosmetic or Overwatch 2 skin.

The name is also slightly misleading. It includes every Yakuza game from Yakuza 0 to Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, but not Like A Dragon or Like A Dragon Ishin. It’s more of a Kiryu bundle than the complete Yakuza series, though if you want to get technical about it, the two missing games aren’t actually called Yakuza.

Anyway, the point is, the Yakuza games wrap some of the best storytelling in the medium around a unique slice-of-life format, with some exciting, over-the-top action in between. The saga follows Kazuma Kiryu, a former member of a high-ranking yakuza clan who grew disenchanted with the greed and cruel ambition of his fellow family members.

Over the course of the story, Kiryu gets accused of murder, clears his name, goes to prison, raises an orphan, and falls in love, all against the backdrop of commentary on social life in Japan and the relationship between yakuza and city and local government.

It’s quite the saga, but the team at RGG Studio balances the series’ heavier moments with plenty of lighthearted and even downright ridiculous moments, including karaoke competitions and hiring a chicken to run a real estate business.

If you’re not keen on committing to the entire bundle, you can grab smaller bundles at a discount – the Yakuza Bundle, featuring 0, Kiwami 1, and Kiwami 2 for $13.49,  for example – or purchase them individually at a pretty steep price cut.

All these sales last through July 3, 2023, on GoG’s website.

Meanwhile, RGG Studio is releasing Yakuza Gaiden in November 2023, a side story featuring Kiryu after his retirement, and the next mainline Yakuza game 2024 – Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth. The latter follows Like A Dragon protagonist Ichiban Kasuga and Kiryu in the series’ first adventure outside Japan.

A new Pitbull song is coming to Samba de Amigo for Switch and VR

Sega is teaming up with rapper and pop star Pitbull, aka Mr Worldwide, for Samba de Amigo with a new song for the Dreamcast reboot.

Sega is teaming up with rapper and pop star Pitbull, aka Mr Worldwide, for Samba de Amigo with a new song for the Dreamcast reboot. Sega announced the collaboration in a new trailer and said the new track and two other classic Pitbull songs will be available in both Samba de Amigo: Party Central for Nintendo Switch, set for launch on Aug. 29, 2023, and Samba de Amigo for Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest 3, which has a vague fall 2023 release date.

The new Pitbull song is “Let’s Take a Shot,” which will also release as a single alongside Pitbull’s new album Trackhouse. The other two tracks are “Shake Senora,” with T-Pain and Sean Paul, and the “party pleaser” song “Celebrate (From The Original Motion Picture “Penguins of Madagascar”).”

“Celebrate” is in the game at launch. “Let’s Take a Shot” and “Shake Senora” will be available as part of a free update that releases for both games on launch day.

Samba de Amigo and Party Central are revivals of the classic Sega Dreamcast rhythm game, where you time your maraca shakes and moves to the beat of a range of pop songs. Both include online multiplayer, leaderboards, a range of new customization options, and song libraries with over three dozen tracks.

Project Re: Fantasy from Atlus is officially Metaphor ReFantazio

Atlus’ fantasy RPG Project Re: Fantasy is still alive, and it’s coming in 2024 as Metaphor Re Fantazio from makers of the Persona games

Atlus’ fantasy RPG Project Re: Fantasy, from the makers of Persona, is still alive, and it’s coming in 2024 as Metaphor ReFantazio. Atlus debuted the game’s first trailer at the Xbox Games Showcase and highlighted an ambitious array of styles and a deep, dark plot.

Metaphor takes place in a world that looks like someone spilled Shin Megami Tensei all over it. It’s a blend of what looks like real-world settings and fantasy architecture with a dash of surreal otherworldliness like you’d expect from Persona 3. The story seems to center on the contest to become the realm’s next ruler, something that apparently requires “the faith of the people.”

Except this is a dark Atlus RPG, so naturally, it’s not that simple. Factions face off against each other, evil spirits interfere and offer you their power, there’s a mouse with a sword, plenty of interpersonal drama, and an airship that doesn’t actually fly – because a giant, multi-legged monster carts it across the land.

It looks like Metaphor is a class-based RPG as well. One short screen showed the party screen, with you – the “Travelling Boy” – as the party leader, with three allies, and Gallica, your fairy navigator. Everyone except Gallica has a class, such as seeker, thief, or knight, and a rank that goes from 1 to Mastery at level 20.

There’s a lot going on in the trailer, and hopefully we’ll see more from Metaphor ReFantazio in the coming months.

Sega showcases revealing new Yakuza 8 trailer at Xbox Games Showcase

Sega and RGG finally showed a trailer for Yakuza 8, officially called Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth, and revealed quite a bit

Sega and RGG finally showed a trailer for Yakuza 8, officially called Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth, and revealed quite a bit – of Ichiban, that is. The trailer from the Xbox Games Showcase shows very little of the actual game, but it shows pretty much every part of Like A Dragon hero Ichiban, save for one small detail.

The Xbox trailer starts with Ichiban waking up alone and unclothed on a crowded beach. In true Ichiban fashion, he doesn’t realize what’s actually going on until he’s terrified a tourist woman, earned the approval of a surfer dude, and finally caused an older woman to take pity on him and let him know he’s in the buff.

It’s a fun, silly trailer, but the interesting thing is where Ichiban is, which is pretty plainly not Yokohama. The beach seems multicultural, perhaps someplace in the United States – Hawaii comes to mind – which would make it the first time RGG’s long-running action series has ventured outside Japan.

Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth will release sometime in 2024 for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC. Kiryu will show up as well, though how it ties in with Yakuza Gaiden, which launches later in 2023, remains to be seen.

Atlus announces Persona 5 Tactica, a strategy Persona spinoff game

P5T is officially Persona 5 Tactica, a tactics-based Persona spin-off that’s launching sooner than you might expect

P5T is officially Persona 5 Tactica, a tactics-based Persona spin-off that’s launching sooner than you might expect. Atlus announced Persona 5 Tactica at the Xbox Games Showcase and said the RPG will launch on Nov. 17, 2023, for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch.

P5T  sees the Phantom Thieves dropped into a mysterious world fraught with danger, and as you’d expect from the tagline “revolutionize your heart,” that danger centers on social and political upheaval. We see the crew in what looks like revolutionary France, teaming up with a new ally, and briefly in what’s probably Edo Japan.

While the trailer might seem short, it’s packed with details that suggest Persona 5 Tactica has quite a bit going on in its tactics systems. The Thieves have their usual attacks, gun abilities, and Persona summons, but familiar skills have new effects attached. Eiha, for example, causes a Despair condition, while some conditions, such as forgetfulness, seemingly trigger a “one more turn” situation by knocking enemies down.

Cover and height play an important role. Some physical skills even ignore cover and deal extra damage. There’s also a new feature called Triple Threat, which apparently lets you trigger an All-Out Attack when three allies are positioned the right way.

It might not be Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor, but it looks like quite the deep strategy game nonetheless.

Atlus unveiled the Persona 3 Remake at Xbox Games Showcase

The rumors of a Persona 3 Remake – and that out-of-bounds dev space in Persona 5 – were true, and Atlus officially unveiled the RPG

Update: June 11, 2023

Atlus announced in a press release that Persona 3 Reload will feature a new English voice cast.

  • Aigis – Dawn Bennett

  • Akihiko Sanada – Alejandro Saab

  • Fuuka Yamagishi – Suzie Yeung

  • Junpei Iori – Zeno Robinson

  • Ken Amada – Justine Lee

  • Mitsuru Kirijo – Allegra Clark

  • Protagonist – Aleks Le

  • Shinjiro Aragaki – Justice Slocum

  • Yukari Takeba – Heather Gonzalez

Original Story

The rumors of a Persona 3 Remake – and that out-of-bounds dev space in Persona 5 – were true, and Atlus officially unveiled the RPG at the Xbox Games Showcase. Persona 3 Remake is officially called Persona 3 Reload and will launch on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC, PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch in early 2024.

The announcement comes after Atlus accidentally uploaded a trailer for the game on its Instagram account, alongside one for Persona 5 Tactica.

The Persona 3 remake trailer highlights the game’s substantial visual overhaul, though what new features or narrative elements Atlus has in store remains to be seen. Persona 3 remake uses a style similar to what Atlus used in the Persona 3 and Persona 5 dancing games, with full 3D models, slick anime style, and some welcome enhancements to Iwatodai and Tartarus, the latter of which looks properly creepy and atmospheric now.

While it’s unclear whether the female protagonist from Persona 3 Portable or the additional epilogue from Persona 3 FES are included, you can, at least, control all your party members manually if you want. No more Marin Karin disasters from Mitsuru.

There’s also no word yet on whether Atlus has recorded a new English voice track.  Vic Mignogna, the original voice of Junpei Iori, was accused of sexual assault and harassment, while Aigis’ voice actor Karen Strassman vocally espoused anti-vaccination and racist views during the Covid-19 lockdowns and Black Lives Matter protests.

Atlus also announced Persona 5 Tactica, a tactics spinoff featuring the Phantom Thieves in literally revolutionary settings.

Summer Game Fest 2023 recap: Final Fantasy 7, Jason Isaacs, and more

Our Summer Game Fest 2023 recap breaks down every reveal, including Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Jason Isaacs in Baldur’s Gate 3

Summer Game Fest 2023 has come and gone, or at least the main event has. The days following will see plenty of additional showcases, including the Xbox Games Showcase, but the initial presentation hosted by Geoff Keighley was bursting with announcements and reveals. Square Enix showed off Final Fantasy 7 Part 2 properly, Insomniac announced Spider-Man 2’s release date, there’s a new 2D Sonic in the works, and RGG Studio’s Yakuza series is coming back again in fall 2023.

There’s a lot to be getting on with, so we’ve broken it all down in our Summer Game Fest 2023 recap.

RGG announces Like A Dragon Gaiden release date at Summer Game Fest

Like A Dragon Gaiden, one of the new Yakuza games RGG Studio is cooking up, is set for launch in fall 2023

Like A Dragon Gaiden, one of the new Yakuza action games RGG Studio is cooking up, is set for launch in fall 2023, Sega announced during Summer Game Fest 2023. The next chapter in Kazuma Kiryu’s story releases Nov. 9, 2023, for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, and PS5.

Like A Dragon Gaiden, officially called Like a Dragon: The Man Who Erased His Name, follows Kiryu long after the events of Yakuza 6, when Kiryu gave up his life as a yakuza and went into hiding. This is Kiryu, though, which means he won’t be staying out of action for long. A shadowy figure coaxes Kiryu out of hiding and tasks him with protecting a vulnerable person.

Kiryu goes undercover, adopting a new identity and gaining a new set of abilities in the process, the Agent Style. Kiryu the agent moves more quickly and strikes with proficiency, and he also gets a range of handy gadgets to ruin a thug’s day with.

This is a Yakuza game, so there’s naturally more than just a high-stakes story with drama and action. Kiryu can relax at the karaoke bar, train at a battle arena, or even dip his toes back into the classic Pocket Circuit mini-game.

Like A Dragon Gaiden pre-orders are open now, and they come with a fighter pack for the battle arena, which includes Goro Majima, Taiga Saejima, and Daigo Dojima.
