SEC once again considering a nine game conference schedule

SEC still looking into the idea of a nine-game conference schedule.

As the SEC has expanded, it’s also had to consider expanding its conference schedule. The additions of Oklahoma and Texas did away with the east-west divisional format the conference had worked under for years to create more flexibility and equity in the scheduling while also keeping the marquee rivalry games intact.

But the league wasn’t ready to move to nine games last year when it was discussed at the spring meetings in Destin. Instead, it held at eight conference games and four nonconference games for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. Still, with the ever-changing landscape of college football, Greg Sankey and the SEC are having to consider nine games.

The motivation for adding a a ninth SEC game comes as major college athletics is set to institute a new revenue-sharing program with players as soon as the fall of 2025. Expenses are estimated to approach $30 million annually, and as such, programs are scrambling to find new pockets of revenue. – Brandon Marcello, CBS Sports

The NCAA’s move to allow schools to share revenue with their student athletes puts a new emphasis on conferences generating new revenue for member institutions. Schools are looking at advertising on the field and they could potentially put ads on the jerseys, though that doesn’t seem as likely. It’s not likely you’re going to see Gaylor Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium or Owen Field be available for naming rights, but schools will have to be more creative to fill their coffers.

According to Marcello’s piece, a ninth game could be worth as much as $5 million to ESPN in the conference’s media rights deal. However, given some teams may have to cancel games, there’s uncertainty on how much a ninth conference game could actually be worth.

Though the money matters, the decision won’t only come down to how a ninth game would be valued. Bowl and College Football Playoff eligibility will be factors.

The nine-game SEC schedule became a popular option early in the debate. Teams would play three permanent rivals each year and then play everyone else in the conference in home and homes every in a four year cycle.

Josh Heupel talks about the unique opportunity to return to Oklahoma

Tennessee Volunteers head coach and Oklahoma Sooners legend Josh Heupel discussed what it will be like to return to Norman in September.

When the SEC schedule was initially released, one of the games that immediately jumped out was the Oklahoma Sooners SEC debut against the Tennessee Volunteers.

Because it was Oklahoma’s debut game and because it was at home, but more importantly, because it meant an OU great would be returning to Norman. When the Sooners host the Volunteers on Sept. 21, they’ll welcome back former quarterback and offensive coordinator [autotag]Josh Heupel[/autotag].

Heupel was a big part of the Sooners national championship team back in 2000 and was the quarterbacks coach and then offensive coordinator under Bob Stoops from 2006 to 2014.

Heupel said during the SEC meetings in Destin, Florida, “It’ll be unique to go back and play inside of that stadium being on the other sideline.”

It’ll be a unique experience for everyone involved. Heupel is a beloved figure among Sooner fans and his return will stir up a lot of memories of that national championship season and the success he had on Oklahoma’s staff.

“For my coaching career to playing career, a lot of great relationships, a lot of great memories,” Heupel said about OU. “So many people have been a huge part of helping me as a player grow as a man, helping me in this profession as well.”

As the offensive coordinator with the Sooners, Oklahoma never scored fewer than 32 points per game. Even when OU’s quarterback play wasn’t at its best, he found a way to keep the ball moving and scoring points.

He was the quarterbacks coach during the 2007 season, helping Paul Thompson make the transition from wide receiver back to quarterback. The Sooners won the Big 12 that year and Thompson was huge in the win over Nebraska.

Heupel also coached the quarterbacks during Sam Bradford’s offensive reign of terror, which led to a Heisman. Heupel was instrumental during Landry Jones’ historic career at Oklahoma as both QB coach and offensive coordinator helping Jones finish his time as the all-time leading passer at the University of Oklahoma.

Returning to Norman, Heupel has had success with Tennessee, helping turn the Vols into an offensive machine the last couple of seasons. Armed with former five-star quarterback [autotag]Nico Iamaleava[/autotag], the former Sooners offensive coordinator will look to put on a show in what will be a memorable return.

Kentucky basketball schedule versus the other SEC teams is revealed

Kentucky basketball’s 18 conference games have been revealed for the upcoming season.

The Southeastern Conference is undergoing a big change this year with the additions of the Texas Longhorns and Oklahoma Sooners. It will be a bigger, and tougher conference in 2024. The Kentucky basketball schedule reflects the new look of the conference as well.

On Monday, the SEC portion of the Wildcats men’s basketball schedule was revealed, and it’s interesting to note the changes. The dates and times are yet to be added, but fans can look at where the game will take place.

It remains an 18-game conference schedule, and Kentucky will play all 15 of the other teams at least once. They’ll play the Tennessee Volunteers, Alabama Crimson Tide, and Vanderbilt Commodores twice.

Of note, the Wildcats will play former coach John Calipari’s Arkansas Razorbacks in Lexington. They’ll play both of the new additions to the league on the road.

The full schedule will be revealed at some time in the future, and fans will be anxious to see it.

SEC announces football conference scheduling format for 2025 season

The schedule will remain at eight games with the same opponents teams face in 2024, but the locations will be flipped.

With the SEC expanding to 16 teams this summer with the addition of Texas and Oklahoma to the league, an eight-game conference schedule was agreed upon for the 2024 campaign, while the future scheduling format was left to be determined.

Now, we know what that format will look like, at least in 2025. Instead of moving to a nine-game schedule as some had speculated would happen, the league will remain at eight games.

Teams will face the same conference opponents they do in 2024, with the home and away locations being swapped. For LSU, that means matchups in Death Valley against South Carolina, Arkansas, Texas A&M and Florida with road games coming against Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, Alabama and Oklahoma.

It’s unclear if they league still intends to expand to nine games in 2026 and beyond, but for now, we know what the next two years of SEC play will look like.

Georgia football’s 2024 schedule confirmed

Georgia football’s 2024 SEC schedule confirmed

We already knew Georgia football’s opponents for the 2024 season, but we weren’t able to confirm the dates until Wednesday night’s SEC release show on ESPN.

This is a new era for the conference, which will add Big 12 powerhouses Texas and Oklahoma in 2024. The traditional divisional format will be gone and the top two teams in the standings will battle for the SEC Championship.

The Bulldogs’ slate next fall is full of marquee matchups, particularly on the road in the some of the most hostile environments the conference has to offer.

Georgia will travel to Alabama, Texas and Ole Miss. The Crimson Tide and the Longhorns are playing in this year’s College Football Playoff semifinals, while the Rebels finished at No. 11 in the final CFP rankings.

Here’s Georgia’s 2024 schedule:

Brian Kelly wants to keep Alabama as an annual opponent in future SEC scheduling

Brian Kelly said that both he and AD Scott Woodward want Alabama to remain an annual rival.

College football is set for some drastic changes in 2024, and that’s especially true in the SEC.

Oklahoma and Texas are joining the league, meaning the end of the division format that has existed since 1992. Schedules have been announced for next season, but the format beyond 2024 is yet to be determined.

LSU prepares to face Alabama on the road this weekend in a pivotal SEC West matchup, and it could potentially be the last matchup between the two in Tuscaloosa for a while. Though they will meet at Tiger Stadium in 2024, future contests are not a guarantee.

However, on the SEC coaches teleconference Wednesday, coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] said that both he and athletics director [autotag]Scott Woodward[/autotag] wish to keep the Crimson Tide as an annual opponent.

“I think we’re going to have a say in what that scheduling looks like in terms of Alabama against LSU,” Kelly said, per Nick Kelly of the Tuscaloosa News. “I think commissioner (Greg) Sankey has given us the opportunity to talk about the team or teams that we want to keep on our schedule. Each school I think has those natural rivalries, and certainly, in talking to Scott Woodward, our AD, he and I both would be in agreement that LSU-Alabama is a game that we would like to see played every year.”

Only time will tell how the scheduling format ultimately looks, but it’s clear LSU is fighting to keep this annual rivalry alive.

There are less than 70 days left until Arkansas football kicks off their 2023 season on Sept. 4 vs. Western Carolina.

Following spring practices and late transfer portal additions, there’s a quiet confidence brewing around the state, but particularly in Fayetteville. Looking at the roster, things look to be in much better shape than where they were last season. Looking at the schedule, things to look pretty manageable aside from a difficult gauntlet to begin SEC play.

Let’s go game-by-game and preview what exactly the Razorbacks will be up against this upcoming season.
