Sooners defensive tackle named SEC Defensive Player of the Week

Oklahoma defensive tackle earns SEC Defensive Player of the Week.

The Oklahoma Sooners moved to 2-0 on the season with their 16-12 win over Houston. It wasn’t the offensive performance that they would have liked, but the defense picked up the slack, keeping Houston from sustaining drives.

Oklahoma needed several late stops to secure the victory and with just under two minutes to play in the game, OU got the stop they needed to seal the deal.

After Luke Elzinga’s punt was downed at the Houston five-yard line, the Cougars had first and 10 but were down just two points. A field goal could have earned Houston the upset. On first down, Cougars quarterback Donovan Smith handed off to Stacy Sneed, who was immediately met at the goalline by defensive tackle [autotag]Gracen Halton[/autotag], who earned the first safety of his career and extended Oklahoma’s lead to four and got the ball back for the Sooners offense to take more time off the clock.

By the time Houston got the ball back, there wasn’t enough time to mount a serious drive for a go-ahead touchdown. And it was all because of Halton’s impressive penetrating ability.

Along with his first career safety, Halton had two tackles for loss and a sack in the game. For his efforts, he was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week. It’s the second weekly award of the season for the Sooners after Luke Elzinga earned Special Teams Player of the Week in the SEC last season. This is the first weekly honor of Halton’s career, signaling a strong start to the season for the former 2022 four-star signee.

Halton currently leads the team with 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. He’s been incredibly disruptive for the Sooners in his rotational role and is the second highest-graded player on the Sooners, according to Pro Football Focus. He’s second among defensive tackles in snaps through two games.

It’s a great start to the season for Halton and as Oklahoma get set to host Tulane, they’ll need more from the standout defensive tackle from San Diego, California.

Sooners kicker wins SEC Special Teams Player of the Week

The Oklahoma Sooners earned their first SEC Weekly Award after a great week from kicker Tyler Keltner.

Special teams was an area that the Oklahoma Sooners needed drastic improvement. The punting situation improved over the second half of last season, but the return game and the kicking game didn’t help the Sooners much.

Well, one game into the 2024 season, the kicking game looks improved. Transfer kicker [autotag]Tyler Keltner[/autotag] was 3-for-3, including makes 50, 42, and 24 yards. He was also perfect on his six extra-point attempts. Keltner was named SEC Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts and earned Oklahoma’s first weekly award in the SEC.

After transferring from Florida State in the spring, Keltner battled with incumbent starter [autotag]Zach Schmit[/autotag] this offseason. Keltner earned the first opportunity to hold down the kicking job and came through in his first game action as a Sooner.

It’s an important revelation for the Sooners, who will need their special teams units to be good to have a chance to contend in 2024. With Oklahoma’s defense leading the way and the offense under transition, OU can’t afford to leave points on the field.

Keltner’s performance provides a lot of confidence in the kicking situation moving forward. He’ll get another opportunity to ply his craft this Saturday evening when the Sooners take on the Houston Cougars.

LSU baseball’s Tommy White earns SEC Player of the Week honors

When the LSU Tigers had their back against a wall this weekend, Tommy White came out swinging.

When the LSU Tigers had their back against a wall, [autotag]Tommy White[/autotag] came out swinging. Tommy Tanks was named the [autotag]SEC Player of the Week[/autotag] after finishing the week going 8-for-15 (.615) with three homers, seven RBI, and a .643 on-base percentage.

For the final SEC series of the regular season, LSU welcomed Ole Miss into the Bayou and the Tigers needed some wins to try to win their way into a regional tournament. LSU swept the Rebels as they won all three games to improve their conference record to 13-17.

Tommy went 3-for-4 in game one, 3-for-4 in game two, and 2-for-5 in game three. It was likely his last series ever in an LSU uniform as Tommy is slated to be an early-round draft pick in the next MLB Draft. If that is the case, he went out on a high note with his performance against Ole Miss.

Johni Broome named SEC Player of the Week

Auburn’s star named SEC Player of the Week

Superstar forward Johni Broome has been named as the SEC Player of the Week for the first week of February.

The conference announced the honor Monday afternoon. It is somewhat surprisingly the first time Auburn’s star player has received the nomination.

Broome did receive two OVC Player of the Week nominations during his time at Morehead State.

After being named a finalist for the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award early in the week, Broome went to work leading his team to a 2-0 record.

The junior secured his ninth double-double of the season, and 55th of his career, to open the week in Auburn’s blowout win over Vanderbilt.

Broome’s 5 blocks were the most among any player in the game, and his 11 rebounds and 16 points ranked second and fourth, respectively.

The most impressive part of Broome’s week came on Saturday in Oxford, MS when he led Auburn to become the first team to win in Ole Miss this season.

After going scoreless for the first 10 minutes of the game, Broome came alive in the second half following an allegedly inspiring halftime speech from teammate [autotag]Chad Baker-Mazara[/autotag].

Auburn’s leader took over the game in the final minutes, finishing with 15 points, 9 rebounds, 3 blocks, and a career-high 7 assists.

While the individual statistics and accolades are great for Broome, Johni is focused on Wednesday’s game in against Alabama in Neville Arena which he deemed “personal”.

Jaylin Williams, Aden Holloway win SEC Player of the Week honors

Jaylin Williams and AdenHolloway were honored by the SEC after dominating Indiana.

Following dominant performances against Indiana, [autotag]Jaylin Williams[/autotag] and [autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag]  have both won the SEC’s Player of the Week awards.

Williams was named the conferences Player of the Week for the first time in his career. The senior tied his career-high with 24 points and added seven assists and six rebounds to lead Auburn to an 104-76 win over the Hoosiers.

Holloway busted out of a mini-slump with a 24 point performance of his own and was named the SEC’s Freshman of the Week for the second time this season. He once again looked like one of the best shooters in the country, going 5-of-8 from behind the arc and making all five of his free throws.

It was the first time Auburn has had two 20-point scorers in once game since [autotag]Jabari Smith[/autotag] (31 points) and [autotag]Walker Kessler[/autotag] (22 points) did go against Vanderbilt on Feb. 16, 2022.

Florida F Tyrese Samuel earns SEC Player of the Week honors

Forward Tyrese Samuel has made an immediate impact at Florida since transferring from Seton Hall, and now he’s the SEC Player of the Week.

Florida basketball lost center Micah Handlogten to injury this week, but transfer forward [autotag]Tyrese Samuel[/autotag] stepped up in a big way for the Gators, earning Player of the Week honors from the SEC office.

Samuel averaged 19 points, eight rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1.5 blocks against Bayor and Pitt this week at the NIT Season Tip-Off in New York. He was named to the All-Tournament team and posted the SEC’s first 20/10/3/3/3 stat line in more than seven years.

That’s exactly the kind of impact Todd Golden hoped Samuel would make when he plucked him from the transfer portal. A four-year player at Seton Hall, Samuel was looking for a bigger stage to show off his talent, and Florida needed big men to replace Colin Castleton and Alex Fudge.

So far, so good. Samuel shouldn’t have to do so much heavy lifting once Handlogten returns, but it is good to know he’s capable of holding down the frontcourt without another major threat in rotation.

The Gators are on the road this week at Wake Forest. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. ET on Wednesday. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU.

Aden Holloway named SEC Freshman of the Week

Holloway has made an immediate impact for the Tigers and is getting some well-deserved recognition.

[autotag]Aden Holloway[/autotag] came to Auburn with plenty of hype and has already shown that it was deserved. The former-five star recruit was named the SEC Freshman of the Week on Monday after his first two collegiate games.

Despite coming off the bench, he is averaging 15 points and 4.5 assists per game. He has already demonstrated his impressive range, making 43.8% (7-16) of his three-point shots.

His 4.5 assists per game are the fifth most in the SEC and his 15 points are the second most on the team, trailing only [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag]’s 17.

Holloway is the first Tiger to win the award since Jabari Smith did six times during the 2021-22 season.

Florida kicker Trey Smack names SEC Special Teams Players of the Week

Florida’s sophomore kicker, Trey Smack, earned SEC Special Teams Player of the Week honors after nailing all five field goal in Week 4.

Most of Florida’s points during Saturday’s 22-7 win over the Charlotte 49ers came off the foot of sophomore [autotag]Trey Smack[/autotag], who was named the SEC Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday.

Smack nailed all five field goal attempts made in his first start as a placekicker for the Gators. He drilled a 27-yarder in the first quarter and a 23-yarder in the second, but those were merely a warmup for a 54-yard attempt that split the uprights with eight minutes to go in the half.

With that 54-yard kick, Smack locked himself in as Florida’s placekicker moving forward, and he also etched his name in the history books. Smack’s field goal was the seventh-longest in Gators history, and no Florida kicker has made five in a game since Eddy Pineiro in 2017 against UAB.

“Hats off to Trey Smack to step up and hit all five of those,” Florida head coach Billy Napier said after the game.

Smack is the third Gator this week to earn SEC Player of the Week honors. Jordan Castell (Freshman) and Cam Jackson (Co-Defensive Lineman) were honored after Week 3’s upset win against Tennessee.

Alabama QB Jalen Milroe named SEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week

Jalen Milroe was named the SEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week for his Week 1 performance against Middle Tennessee State.

After an impressive Week 1 performance, Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe was named the SEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week. The other player that was listed was Tennessee quarterback Joe Milton.

All eyes were on Milroe as he took the field on Saturday evening in Alabama’s Week 1 matchup versus Middle Tennessee State. It did not long for Alabama fans to realize that Milroe came to prove a point.

The Texas native finished the game 13 for 18 passing with 194 passing yards and three passing touchdowns. He also rushed for 48 yards and two touchdowns.

Milroe became the first quarterback in program history to throw for three touchdowns and rush for two touchdowns in a single game.

His play helped Alabama defeat the Blue Raiders 56-7. Milroe will look to continue to play well when the Crimson Tide play host to Texas in Week 2.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the Alabama football program during the 2023 season.

Gunner Britton named SEC offensive lineman of the week

Britton played nearly perfect in week one by not allowing one QB pressure and helping the Tigers run wild.

Auburn offensive lineman [autotag]Gunner Britton[/autotag] was named the SEC offensive lineman of the week on Monday, becoming the first Auburn Tiger of the season to capture SEC player of the week honors.

Britton, who spent most of camp working at the right tackle position, started at left guard in Saturday’s opener, eventually playing three positions along the long during the game.

Britton did not allow a QB pressure during his on the field, helping the Auburn offensive line keep quarterbacks [autotag]Payton Thorne[/autotag], [autotag]Robby Ashford[/autotag], and [autotag]Holden Geriner[/autotag] upright for the entirety of the game.

Britton was also a key reason Auburn was able to rush for 289 yards and six against the UMass defense. His ability to play positions across the line allows the other Tiger linemen to stay fresh, rotating in and out of the game.

Head coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] spoke about Britton’s versatility following Auburn’s opening game victory.

“I think it just speaks to his importance to us, he needs to be on the field, and we need to stay fresh because we do like to go fast.”

Britton made sure to shout out his teammates and relay his focus back to the remainder of the season when asked what winning the award meant to him.

“It’s a blessing,” Britton said. “It’s not really about me. It’s about my teammates and what they do for me. I can’t wait to call my dad. He’s going to probably cry. It will be a good thing for my whole family. It’s a big accomplishment but for me, it’s the first game. I’ve got 11 more, hopefully, 12 and 13.”

Britton may have many more games ahead of him this season, and if he plays anywhere close to the way he played in week one he may end up with a few more awards than just one SEC offensive lineman of the week.

Britton and the rest of the Auburn o-line will look to continue their success from week one when the team flies across the country to take of Cal at 9 pm CST on Saturday.
