The RAYS (-125) are a strong play behind Civale. He was really evolving into a strong pitcher with the Guardians and was the de facto No. 1 guy there at times due to injuries, etc. He has grown into a solid rotation guy and is making Rays GM Erik Neander look very smart.

As long as Civale can keep OF Teoscar Hernandez somewhat in check, he’ll be just fine. Hernandez is working on a career-high 17-game hitting streak, batting .397 (27-for-68) with 7 HR and 20 RBI, for those interested in prop bets.

Run line/Against the spread

The RAYS -1.5 (+155) are worth a look on the run line. In the past 11 games when favored, Tampa Bay has covered the run line at a 7-4 clip. They’re 5-2 in the past 7 games at home, covering 4 of 5 games on the run line as favorites during that span.

Over/Under

OVER 8.5 (-105) is worth playing, but go very lightly.

The MARINERS (-135) are a solid play behind their most consistent pitcher as they look to fire the first salvo in this potential playoff series preview.

The difference is on the hill, as Castillo has won 7 of his 10 decisions in the past 15 starts, and he is 5-0 with a 1.02 WHIP across his previous 7 appearances.

Littell has really struggled at Tropicana Field, surrendering 8 of his season’s 11 homers allowed under the dome. He has a 6.04 ERA in 28 1/3 IP at home, vs. a 3.60 ERA in 35 IP on the road.

Run line/Against the spread

The MARINERS -1.5 (+125) should be able to get to Littell early and often, especially with the white-hot OF Julio Rodriguez smashing the ball lately. Facing J-Rod is bad news for the homer-prone Littell.

Seattle comes with a little risk, however. While it covered the run line as a favorite in the getaway day game in Cincinnati on Wednesday, the M’s are just 3-5 in the past 8 as favorites while covering the run line just once.

Over/Under

OVER 8 (-120) is the lean, but go with a half-unit or less.

Castillo isn’t likely to concede much in his time on the bump, but this is a play against Littell and his penchant for serving up homers at The Trop.

The Over is on a 3-1-1 run for the M’s too, and is 11-6 in the past 17 games overall for the Rays.

Crawford and OF Julio Rodriguez combined for 6 hits and 3 RBIs Saturday. The M’s are just 4-6, 9-11 and 13-17 over the last 10, 20 and 30 games and sit 10 games out in the AL West.

Castillo has been superb this season, though his record doesn’t show it. He’ll have a say in the Cy Young voting before season’s end. The right-hander has a 2.32 ERA and 50 K’s in 42 2/3 IP over his last 7 starts. He has been victimized by the long ball, though, with 7 HRs allowed in his last 4 starts. The weather should assist him Sunday.

Both teams are 7-3 O/U in the last 10. It’s projected to be a 70-degree day with an 8-mph gust coming in from left-center. The Over has cashed in both games of the series and in 4 of the last 5. There is some concern about McClanahan’s balky back, but he leads MLB with a 2.23 ERA for a reason. The strange thing is his 3.4 BB/9 is way up from last season’s 2.1 mark, and his K/9 is down to 9.7 from 10.5 last year. So he’s experiencing more traffic on the bases, but it has yet to affect him.

The RAYS (-125) are at a good price in this matchup.

Run line/Against the spread

Tampa is 20-20 on the RL on the road, and Seattle is 17-24 on the RL at home. There have been a ton of 1-run games between the teams – 6 of the last 8. So taking Tampa here is dangerous. PASS.

I’ll take a chance on McClanahan’s K’s instead. As mentioned, his K-rate is down, and he’s coming off a back issue. He also hasn’t struck out 7 or more batters in 4 straight starts. He struck out 5 Mariners the last time he faced them. Considering you can get this at plus money, I’ll take SHANE MCCLANAHAN UNDER 6.5 K’S (+105).

Over/Under

The Over is 4-5-1 over the last 10 games between the teams. Tampa is 7-3 O/U over the last 10, and Seattle is 5-5. Weather should aid pitchers Friday on a 75-degree day with a 9-mph gust coming in from left-center field.

It’s absolutely possible the Over hits with McClanahan’s back issues making his longevity a question mark, but I’m feeling UNDER 7.5 (-115).

LEAN RAYS (-145) because this is a little pricey given how well the Mariners (+120) have played against Tampa since the start of last season, Rasmussen’s pitching peripherals, and the Tampa pitching staff’s health. The Rays are missing several talented arms in both their rotation and bullpen.

However, Tampa’s lineup rakes against left-handed pitching and the Rays are 3-1 overall versus lefty starters. Tampa’s lineup ranks third in wRC+ against lefties (141) and fourth in both wOBA (.359) and BB/K (0.48), according to FanGraphs.

Run line/Against the spread

PASS because I don’t see a big enough discrepancy between these teams in this spot to take either RL.

Since I’m on Tampa’s ML, the Rays -1.5 (+140) is the side I lean toward, but I don’t have enough conviction to put up any money.

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 7.5 (-120) because I don’t have a lot of confidence in either starter, but both pitching staffs are elite. Gonzales’ ERA and WHIP are better in Tampa than his career marks and Tropicana Field is a pitcher-friendly ballpark.

Furthermore, the Over 7.5 (-105) is getting hammered by the market (according to Pregame.com) but the Under is pricier, which suggests the House wants to induce more pro-Over money. Obviously, we don’t want to play into the House’s hand.

Money line

LEAN to the MARINERS (+110)  only because their lone loss to the Rays (-135) last season was in an identical pitching matchup with Gilbert as Seattle’s starter and Tampa using a bullpen day.

There’s more money on the Rays, but more bets have been placed on the Mariners and it’s typically better to follow the money when it’s counter to the public in sports betting.

Seattle’s lineup has been the best in baseball to start the season and the Mariners’ relief pitching has been more impressive than Tampa’s mostly due to the important arms the Rays are missing.

Gilbert is starting to pitch up to the potential Seattle saw in him when they  took him in the first round of the 2018 draft. His basic pitching numbers versus the Rays weren’t impressive, but Gilbert’s pitching peripherals paint a much nicer picture of his matchup against Tampa’s lineup.

PASS because the Mariners +1.5 (-190) is out of my price range even though I’d love some insurance for our Mariners ML bet. I wouldn’t hate the idea of parlaying Seattle’s RL with another similarly priced team for a better payout,  but I don’t have the other leg of that parlay off the top of my head.

PASS because I don’t see a lot of value in this total at the current price. Both pitching staffs are elite and Tropicana Field is a pitcher-friendly ballpark but there are mashers in each lineup.
