The Seattle Mariners (32-35) host the Minnesota Twins (26-39) Monday for the first of a three-game series in T-Mobile Park with a 10:10 p.m. ET first pitch. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook‘s lines around the Twins vs. Mariners odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Minnesota was clobbered 14-3 Sunday in the rubber match of a three-game series with the Houston Astros. The Twins are just 4-6 in their last 10 games and haven’t won a series since May 24-26 vs. the Baltimore Orioles.

Seattle prevented a three-game sweep at the hands of the Cleveland Indians, and snapped a three-game losing skid, with a 6-2 win Sunday. The Mariners are also 4-6 in their last 10 games.

GIMME the MARINERS (+120) for 1 unit because the Twins are being priced like they are the same team from the past two seasons when in reality Minnesota is worse in all phases of the game.

Maeda has just been activated off of the 10-day IL and the Twins are hoping he’s finally right because his 2021 numbers have fallen off a cliff.

For instance, Maeda has gone from the 88th percentile or better to the 27th percentile or worse in the following advanced pitching metrics: K%, hard-hit rate, exit velocity, expected opponent’s wOBA and expected ERA.

Also, Minnesota’s bullpen went from the third-highest WAR in 2020 to the 24th-ranked WAR thus far in 2021.

These sharp declines in pitching numbers for both Maeda and Minnesota’s bullpen are the reason why the Twins are just 2-7 in Maeda’s nine starts this season and why I’m more fading Minnesota than BETTING the  MARINERS (+120).

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

Slight “LEAN” to the MARINERS -1.5 (+165) for a quarter unit because of the aforementioned rationale and Minnesota’s last five losses have all been by at least two runs.

Over/Under (O/U)

“LEAN” to the OVER 8 (-110) for a half unit because Gonzales is a fringe rotation guy, and Maeda is in the midst of a career-worst season with the Twins going Over the total in seven of his nine starts.

Furthermore, more than 95% of the money at the time of writing is on the Under (according to Pregame.com) and my instinct is to fade such a lopsided sports betting market.

That being said, I’d imagine the big bucks being wagered on the Under is “sharp” money considering who’s betting the Under in a Twins-Mariners Monday game with two NBA playoff games also on the sports calendar.

For that reason, I can only “LEAN” to the OVER 8 (-110).

For instance, Dunn’s ERA vs. teams with a losing record is more than two runs lower against losing teams than it is against teams over .500. His WHIP is 1.02 against losing teams vs. 1.35 WHIP against winning teams, and he has a 12.0 K/9 vs. losing teams compared to a 6.1 K/9 against teams above .500.

While the Indians have a winning record, their lineup is in the bottom-10 of several advanced hitting categories such as WAR (27th), wRC+ (28th) and wOBA (26th).

Slight “LEAN” to the MARINERS (+125) FIRST 5 INNINGS for a quarter unit because their First 5 Innings run line is a much sharper wager and Seattle’s bullpen is pretty thin since the Mariners played Thursday. The Cleveland bullpen is well-rested after having an off-day Thursday.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

GIMME MARINERS +0.5 (-110) FIRST 5 INNINGS for 1 unit based on the aforementioned rationale and Civale’s numbers aren’t as impressive when you look under the hood.

For example, Civale grades in the 30th percentile of opponent’s expected wOBA, 20th percentile of opponent’s expected slugging percentage, 11th percentile of whiff rate and 15th percentile of K%.

Also, the Mariners had the second-highest hard-hit rate of any of Civale’s opponent’s this season and they were squaring up his stuff nicely. Seattle’s lineup put 45% of balls in play toward centerfield.

Furthermore, Civale has pitched against soft competition this season. Nine of his 12 starts came against teams with a losing record and the most earned runs he has given up in a game this season was against Seattle.

Over/Under (O/U)

“LEAN” to the UNDER 5 (-120) FIRST 5 INNINGS for a half unit. Despite knocking Civale’s 2021 production down a peg, he’s still the future of a Cleveland organization that routinely churns out Cy Young caliber pitchers and I expect Dunn to pitch a quality start.

The Tigers going with a bullpen game looks iffy with the club’s 5.25 relief ERA. Detroit has been undone somewhat, though, by unkind rates around the margins, such as a .310 BABIP and 17.3% home run to fly-ball rate.

Consider partial-unit action here, but DETROIT (-115) is a decent play.

In addition, the Rangers have lost eight straight games in the Pacific Northwest and eight of the past 10 meetings overall.

The MARINERS +1.5 (-175) is a decent play if you’re looking for a little bit of insurance. This is a pitching matchup that isn’t very good, but at least Flexen has pitched into the seventh inning against the Rangers -1.5 (+145) this season. That has to count for something, right?

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 8.5 (-115) is the best play in this game. The Over has cashed in five straight on the road for the Rangers while going 7-1 in their past eight divisional games. The Over has also hit in each of the past four meetings in this series.

BET the PADRES -1.5 (+105) for 1 unit because Friday’s 16-run outburst vs. the Mariners +1.5 (-125) could be a sign of things to come for San Diego’s lineup and the Padres own a sizable pitching advantage.

For instance, San Diego’s starter is a former No. 7 overall pick of the 2018 MLB draft and Weathers is expected to be on a pitch limit but could hand the ball off to RHP Dinelson Lamet who has got “top of the rotation” stuff.

Also, the Padres, on paper, have one of the best lineups in baseball, staggers hitters with different batting stances and can light up Sheffield who grades in the 30th percentile or lower in several advanced pitching metrics.

On top of that, San Diego’s bullpen is top-5 in the league across several advanced pitching categories, and Seattle’s lineup has the second-worst WAR in the majors.

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS even though San Diego’s lineup is set up for success because it still has to prove it can hit left-handed pitching, and the presumed “sharp” money in the market is on the Under whereas the public is on the Over. I don’t have a feel either way.

I’m a sucker for Seattle’s First 5 Innings value since I like Flexen more than Paddack but am laying off the full-game upset because the Mariners’ bullpen is mediocre and the Padres’ relief unit is elite.

Also, Paddack predominantly uses two pitches (fastball and changeup), and  I’m thinking Seattle’s struggling lineup could bust its slump vs. the predictable Paddack.

It’s not like Paddack’s fastball is extraordinary either since he grades in the 25th percentile for fastball spin and 23rd percentile in chase rate.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

“LEAN” to the MARINERS +1.5 (-115) for a three-fourths unit because it’s a wiser play than Seattle outright.

Furthermore, it’s a tight window we are trying to fit this Seattle upset into considering San Diego is one of the hottest teams in the Majors.

Over/Under (O/U)

PASS with a “lean” to the Over 7.5 (-115) because of the reduced juice, it’s a fade of the market, and these teams have a combined 9-5 O/U record when these starters are on the bump.

However, I’m somewhat banking on the Mariners getting to Paddack, and the Padres’ lineup is fully healthy and one of the best in the Majors. So I’m just going to stay away from the total.

BET the MARINERS -0.5 (-115) FIRST 5 INNINGS since Seattle’s bats came alive against a strong Cleveland pitching staff this weekend and Detroit’s lineup is terrible vs. left-handed pitching.

Seattle scored seven runs in back-to-back wins over Cleveland, OF Mitch Haniger is tied atop the MLB with 12 home runs and the Mariners just called up one of the best prospects in baseball in CF Jarred Kelenic. 

The Tigers are by far the worst lineup vs. lefties. They rank in the bottom of the majors in wRC+, wOBA, OPS, BB/K rate and have the fourth-lowest hard-hit rate against left-handed pitching.

Over/Under (O/U)

“LEAN” to the UNDER 7.5 (-105) for a quarter unit if at all because of Detroit’s hitting woes vs. lefties and, despite liking what Seattle’s lineup could be, it’s still bottom 10 in WAR, wRC+ and wOBA for the year.
