Seahawks QB Geno Smith is No. 3 in the NFL for passing yards this year

The Seattle Seahawks have come out of the gate hot by building a 3-0 record and claiming first place in the NFC West. They have done so despite not playing consistent, or even quality, offense for large stretches of these three games. However, the one bright spot in all three has been quarterback Geno Smith, who is helping carry this unit.

Smith is not just passing the eye test, his success is also being reflected in the box score. Right now, Smith has thrown for the third-most passing yards in the entire NFL this season. He trails only Dak Prescott of the Cowboys and Brock Purdy of the 49ers, and even then he is only 64 and 55 yards, respectively, behind those two signal callers.

Against the Miami Dolphins, Smith had 289 yards through the air. This, of course, following Week 2 in New England where he torched the Pats for 327 yards passing. Smith has another opportunity for yardage in Week 4 when he faces a Detroit Lions team he has had incredible success against in recent memory. The last two times he’s faced Detroit, Smith has a combined 648 yards and four touchdown passes.

Not to mention the health of running back Kenneth Walker and the inconsistency of Zach Charbonnet is likely going to contribute to Seattle having another pass-heavy attack when they face the Lions. Charbonnet did have 91 yards on Sunday, suggesting he can improve, but Smith is still very much the key factor in this offense.

In both years Geno Smith has been the starting quarterback in Seattle, he has qualified for the Pro Bowl. With how he is playing right now, a third-straight appearance is hardly out of the question for the 2022 Comeback Player of the Year.

Seahawks suffocate the Dolphins 24-3, improve to 3-0

Seahawks suffocate the Dolphins 24-3, improve to 3-0

For only the eighth time in franchise history – and first since 2020 – the Seattle Seahawks have started the season 3-0 by defeating the Miami Dolphins 24-3 at Lumen Field. It was a rather sloppy, penalty-filled affair from both teams, but in the end the Seahawks took care of business against a team missing their top two quarterbacks.

Seattle erupted to 17 points in the first quarter, scoring on three of their first four possessions. But after that, the gunpowder for fireworks clearly ran out. Their next six possessions went as follows:

  • Missed field goal
  • Punt
  • Punt
  • Punt
  • Punt
  • Punt
  • Interception

The Seahawks did manage to finally break through and ice the game at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Seattle, backed up at their own two-yard line (more on how they got there, shortly), engineered a 98-yard drive on 11 plays which was capped off by a 10-yard scamper from running back Zach Charbonnet. It was not a sharp performance from the Seahawks, but their offense did more than enough to take advantage of the steller day from the defense.

Why were the Seahawks in need of having to go 98 yards? Because the defense had stopped Miami on 4th down at the two-yard line. In fact, it was the second time Seattle prevented the Dolphins from doing anything in the red zone. Macdonald’s defense suffocated the life from a severely depleted Miami team. Backup Skylar Thompson was knocked out of the game, forcing emergency third stringer Tim Boyle to step into action. Predictably, he did not make much of an impact.

The Dolphins had 12 possessions. Of those 12, six ended in punts, three were turnover on downs, a missed field goal, a made field goal thanks to an interception setting them up in the Seahawks red zone, and a sack to end the first half. Miami was 1-for-12 on third down, and had a whopping 205 total yards on 56 plays.

Seattle maintains their perch atop the NFC West with their 3-0 record, but will face their biggest test of the season in Week 4. The Seahawks will head back to Detroit for the third-consecutive season to play the Lions, who will await them on Monday Night Football.

First half highlights: Seahawks lead Dolphins 17-3

First half highlights: Seahawks lead Dolphins 17-3

The Seattle Seahawks have started the game red-hot against the Miami Dolphins. Seattle is seeking their first 3-0 start since 2020 and so far they are playing like they truly want it.

The Seahawks started the game off with a 56-yard field goal on their opening drive to take an early 3-0 lead. Miami attempted a 57-yarder themselves to respond, but the kick sailed wide left. Seattle managed to find the end zone on their ensuing possession, set up lovely by DK Metcalf’s remarkable reception on second down.

One play later, Charbonnet found paydirt for the second time in as many weeks.

Unfortunately, Seattle’s third drive of the game ended in near-disaster. Backed up in the shadow of the north end zone, Geno Smith was nearly sacked on 3rd-and-15. Instead, he tossed an ill-advised ball towards Charbonnet, which was far too high and landed in the waiting arms of Dolphins defensive back Kader Kohou.

Once more, the Seahawks defense was placed in a brutal spot on the field to defend. They were put in their own red zone twice in Week 1 against the Broncos, and they found themselves there again. Fortunately, Seattle’s defense did what they excel at this season and held Miami to only a field goal.

Geno Smith found instant redemption on his very next throw in the final five seconds of the first quarter.

Metcalf’s 71-yard touchdown was the third longest in his career, and the seventh time he’s had a 50+ yard score.

Seattle’s pass rush came to play in the first half, sacking Skylar Thompson four times, including the first sack of the season from Derick Hall. Boye Mafe also had his third sack of the season, his third in as many games. Last season, he set a franchise record for a sack in seven-straight games.

The second quarter did get a bit sloppier for Seattle. Their three drives before halftime resulted in a missed field goal, two punts and a bevy of penalties caused by the offensive line. However, thanks to the defense, their lead was never in jeopardy. The Seahawks forced Miami to punt the ball on three-straight drives in the second quarter, and then another devastating sack from Derick Hall to conclude the half.

The Dolphins will get the ball to start the second half.

Olympic gold medalist Jordan Chiles to raise 12th Man Flag

Olympic gold medalist Jordan Chiles to raise 12th Man Flag

The best pregame tradition in the NFL just got a little more dynamic. Before every Seattle Seahawks home game, someone notable always gets the honor to raise the iconic 12th Man Flag. On Sunday, the 12’s will get a golden opportunity to see a true American sports hero in Olympic gold medalist – and Washington native – Jordan Chiles, as she will raise their flag against the Miami Dolphins.

Chiles was a key member of the unspeakably remarkable Team USA gymnastics squad that dominated the 2024 Paris Olympics. Chiles helped our country take home gold during the team events.

Team USA dominated overall during the 2024 Paris Olympics, earning the most gold medals (40) and most medals overall (126).

The 23-year-old graduate from Prairie High School has become one of the new faces of Team USA Gymnastics, and is poised to continue our nation’s elite legacy of female gymnasts. Now, she gets to add one more honor to her already storied career: raising the 12th Man Flag.

Week 3 preview and prediction: Seattle Seahawks vs Miami Dolphins

Week 3 preview and prediction: Seattle Seahawks vs Miami Dolphins

The Seattle Seahawks will take on the Miami Dolphins this afternoon at Lumen Field for a Week 3 showdown. It is the third-straight AFC opponent for the Seahawks to start the season, and their second-straight from the AFC East division. The last time these teams met in the Emerald City was the Week 1 kickoff for the 2016 season.

The Seahawks have sole possession of first place in the NFC West, and a win today over the Dolphins will solidify their position. Head coach Mike Macdonald is already the first Seahawks head coach to begin his career with the franchise 2-0, and improving to 3-0 record will push him further into a category of his own. Seattle is going to have to earn it, just like their previous two games.

Miami may be without quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who was placed on Injured Reserve, but they should still be a formidable opponent. Their wide receivers are lethal beyond reason, and they’ve had 10 days to prepare for this game by virtue of having last played on Thursday Night Football. The Dolphins are well coached, and deep at some of the most important positions on the field.

That being said, the Seahawks may be one of the few teams with a secondary that can provide speedbumps to the ‘Phins. Yes, this will be the first legitimate test for this secondary, as the Broncos and Patriots certianly did not have a wide receiver room capable of punishing them. But this group is talented nonetheless, and should be up for the task. Not to mention Seattle’s pass rush has been making life miserable for quarterbacks this year. Miami’s Skylar Thompson is sure to be under fire, with even less time to find the likes of his elite receivers.

The real challenge will be if Seattle’s defense can stop the run and get off the field. Last week, the Patriots ran for 185 yards as a team. Miami will be without running back Raheem Mostert, but still have De’Von Achane who rushed for 96 yards.

Speaking of running backs, the Seahawks will be without their star in Kenneth Walker, who will be missing his 2nd-straight game. The lack of Walker in the mix makes Seattle’s offense a little more one dimensional, as Zach Charbonnet failed to show he could carry the load on his own. However, with how great quarterback Geno Smith has been playing, the Seahawks might be fine offensively.

Seattle’s wide receiver room is also one of the few position groups in the league that makes Miami’s advantage at wide receiver less dominant. DK Metcalf and Jaxon Smith-Njigba had their way with New England’s defensive backs last week. Although, Sunday will mark the return of Jalen Ramsey back to Seattle, who always battled Metcalf well. Hopefully, Metcalf can keep his cool when facing his former foe.

Ultimately, I predict another close game for the Seahawks. The lack of Walker is going to make their offense not as dynamic, but they should still have more than enough gas in the tank to outlast Thompson. I expect Macdonald’s defense to force the backup into a few mistakes to help be the difference in the game.

Prediction: Seahawks over Dolphins 24-20

Week 3 broadcast map: how to watch Seahawks vs. Dolphins

Week 3 broadcast map: how to watch Seahawks vs. Dolphins

The Seattle Seahawks are back in the friendly confines of Lumen Field this weekend to host the Miami Dolphins. It will be Miami’s first trip back to Seattle since Week 1 of the 2016 season, where the Seahawks prevailed with a narrow 12-10 victory.

The Dolphins will sadly be shorthanded, as quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has been placed on the Injured Reserve list with yet another concussion. However, the Dolphins have more than enough talent to provide the Seahawks with a considerable challenge. Seattle should not take this matchup lightly, even with backup Skylar Thompson at the helm.

The Seahawks are playing their third-consecutive AFC team, and are once again going to be featured on a CBS broadcast. They will be kicking off at 1:05 PM, Pacific Daylight Time. Below is the national broadcast map for the afternoon slate of NFL games. Fittingly, the green represents the areas of the country that will witness the Seahawks and Dolphins game, per 506sports.com.

On the call for CBS will be Kevin Harlan and Trent Green.

Seahawks name team captains for Week 3 vs. Dolphins

Seahawks name team captains for Week 3 vs. Dolphins

One of the big changes Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald made this season was to name weekly captains as opposed to having season-long captains. Pete Carroll previously had the locker room vote on captains that remained in place throughout the entire campaign. Macdonald’s approach is allowing various players to serve as captains for special games.

As such, the Seahawks named their three captains for Sunday’s Week 3 clash at Lumen Field versus the Miami Dolphins. They are cornerback Devon Witherspoon, kicker Jason Myers, and center Connor Williams.

https://twitter.com/Seahawks/status/1837190911723458794

Williams is a no brainer. He spent the previous two campaigns (2022-23) with the Dolphins after signing a two-year contract worth $14 million during the 2022 free agency period. The Dolphins didn’t show interest in retaining his services after he suffered a season-ending ACL injury in Week 14 last year. This is precisely why coach Macdonald prefers the weekly captains approach. It offers Williams an opportunity to serve as a captain versus a familiar opponent.

Witherspoon is an emerging superstar. His captaincy selection is no surprise, particularly given that he hails from Pensacola, Florida. Witherspoon has totaled 14 tackles and one pass breakup so far this season.

Myers is among the longest-tenured Seahawks, having first joined the franchise in 2019. He’s a perfect five-of-five on field goal attempts this season with a long of 50. He’s also converted 100% of his extra point opportunities. Myers, a two-time Pro Bowler and 2022 NFL scoring leader, is an established veteran in Macdonald’s locker room.

The Seattle Seahawks ar enow entering into a full calendar week of injury reports featuring their star running back, Kenneth Walker III, not practicing. Walker blew up the Denver Broncos’ defense, but suffered an oblique injury in the fourth quarter. Apparently, it has turned into something considerably more serious than we thought.

The good news is Leonard Williams, and Boye Mafe, who did not participate in practice, were limited on Thursday. DK Metcalf was listed as a full participant himself. This is a good trend for three of Seattle’s most important players to be active come Sunday.

Seahawks Week 3 injury report: Kenneth Walker still not practicing

The Seattle Seahawks have released their first injury report list of the week, and it is a rather lengthy one. The Seahawks are gearing up to take on the Miami Dolphins to attempt to improve to 3-0, but are working with a skeleton crew at practice.

Once again, running back Kenneth Walker is not a participant in practice. However, he is certainly not alone on the DNP list. The good news is tight end Pharaoh Brown is finally back to practicing, even if it is in a limited capacity. He has been dealing with a foot injury which has caused him to miss the first two games. The full injury report can be seen below.

Seahawks to wear all-navy uniforms in Week 3

Seahawks to wear all-navy uniforms in Week 3

The most important news of the week is finally upon us: the uniform combination the Seattle Seahawks are going to wear, of course! The Seahawks are back within the friendly confines of Lumen Field this weekend to host the Miami Dolphins. They will do so while wearing their typical all-college navy home uniforms.

Since Seattle wore their beloved royal blue throwbacks in Week 1, and were the away team in Week 2, Sunday will mark the season debut of their regular home threads.

https://twitter.com/Seahawks/status/1836450900984107514

Of all the uniform combinations the Seahawks have, their typical all-blue look is by far the most successful. Yes, this is in part because they have worn these at home more often than any other combination since they were introduced in 2012, but also it speaks to how difficult the Seahawks are to beat in Seattle.

Overall, the Seahawks enjoy a 65-26 record (including the playoffs) in this uniform combo, and it’s the uniform Seattle wore the last time they hosted the Dolphins. To kick off the 2016 season, Miami came to Lumen Field, and the Seahawks prevailed with a 12-10 victory.

Trailing 10-6 in the final moments of the game, Seattle narrowly defended home turf thanks to Russell Wilson finding Doug Baldwin for a touchdown with only 0:31 seconds to spare.

The Seahawks will kick off this Sunday at 1:05 pm Pacific time.
