Seahawks just barely favorites over Vikings for Week 3 matchup

Heading into Week 3, Seattle is favored by 1.5 points against Minnesota, according to Tipico Sportsbook.

The Seattle Seahawks blew it at home against the Tennessee Titans this past week, surrendering a 14-point lead in the fourth quarter to fall to 1-1 on the season. They weren’t alone in screw-up territory, though. The Minnesota Vikings lost by one point to the Arizona Cardinals thanks to a missed chip-shot field goal (sounds familiar).

As it happens, the Vikings are next on the schedule and even though the Seahawks are the road team they are favorites. Heading into Week 3, Seattle is favored by 1.5 points against Minnesota, according to Tipico Sportsbook.

Seattle has dominated this series in the Russell Wilson era, winning each of their last seven meetings with the Vikings going back to 2012. The most recent came last season on Monday Night Football, a one-point victory.

Watch: Russell Wilson beats Vikings with 94-yard fourth-quarter drive

Once again, Russell Wilson proved that in 2020, he’s the NFL’s heavyweight chanmpion.

Just when you think you’ve got Russell Wilson where you want him, the best quarterback in football steps on your toes on the way to the end zone, and you stand embarrassed. On Sunday night, the Vikings did their level best to limit Wilson as much as they could, and they did so in the only way any opponent can consistently do it — they kept him off the field. Minnesota exposited Seattle’s leaky run defense, amassing 201 yards on 41carries, and won the time of possession battle, 39:18 to 20:32.

There was only one problem: With two minutes left in the game, up 26-21, head coach Mike Zimmer signed off on one too many rushing attempts. On fourth down from the Seattle six-yard line, the Vikings ran Alexander Mattison for no gain, and the Seahawks took over with 94 yards to gain to win the game.

At that point, if you’ve watched Russell Wilson all season, it was automatic. The Vikings Let Russ Cook, and they lived to regret it. Wilson completed a 39-yard pass to receiver D.K. Metcalf on fourth-and-10 to extend the drive…

…and then, with 20 seconds on the clock, the winning score.

“The defense has been so clutch in crucial moments this year,” Wilson told NBC’s Michele Tafoya after the game. “We just believed that if we got the ball back, something great was going to happen. And we just said that on the sideline — stay neutral, and keep believing. We made a crucial catch by D.K. on fourth down — what an unbelievable catch. We went up and down the field there, and we had a couple chances to score early on, but it actually worked out better that we scored on the last play there on fourth down. It’s always a heavyweight fight.”

And in the NFL of 2020, Russell Wilson is the heavyweight champion. Week 5 just proved it all over again.

Why Minnesota Vikings Will Win

It’s time to have some fun on offense.

Seattle might be having a fantastic, undefeated season, but tend defense is along for the ride. The Seahawks are dead last in the NFL in total defense and pass D, getting hit for over 300 yards through the air in each of the first four games.

Kirk Cousins hasn’t been consistent so far, but he has been okay in the last two games as Justin Jefferson emerged as a factor to take the pressure off of Adam Thielen. The Vikings should hit the 300-yard mark through the air, but …

Why Seattle Seahawks Will Win

The Minnesota defense isn’t exactly a brick wall.

The Vikings are giving up passing yards in chunks. Everyone has hit the 200-yard mark so far with three of the four teams getting to 290 yards.

Hello, Russell Wilson.

It’s stupid-early to get into the MVP discussion, but Wilson is eating just fine, hitting 75% of his passes for 1,285 yards with 16 touchdowns and just two picks. Minnesota doesn’t have a consistent enough pass rush to be a problem.

Fantasy Football Player To Watch

WR Tyler Lockett, Seattle
Lockett and all the Seahawk receivers should have their way with the young Viking corners. Mike Zimmer’s defense will likely focus its attention of taking away the more menacing WR DK Metcalf. In previous matchups with the Vikes, Seattle has pounded RB Chris Carson, but this year’s “Let Russ Cook” offense will seek to jump out to an early lead through the air. After a relatively quiet game last week (4 targets, 2 catches, 39 scoreless yards), Lockett will take another turn to shine here.

What’s Going To Happen

This should be a blast.

The two teams will trade big play shots all over the field in a back-and-forth firefight with both sides cranking up 400 yards of total offense. The difference will be Wilson and his weapons. The Seahawk receivers are far stronger than Minnesota, and Cousins isn’t Russell.

NFC playoff picture: Why Rams should root for Seahawks to beat Vikings

The Rams need the Seahawks to win on Monday night in order to improve their playoff odds.

The 2019 season is winding down with 30 teams only having four games remaining on their schedules. The Seahawks and Vikings will join that group after Monday night’s showdown, which has huge postseason implications – especially for the Rams.

At 9-2, the Seahawks are currently the No. 5 seed in the NFC. The Vikings are close behind, sitting at 8-3. The Seahawks can overtake the 49ers for the division lead with a win on Monday night, while Minnesota can move up to the No. 5 seed by knocking off Seattle.

The Rams are in the near distance at 7-5, needing some help in order to make the playoffs. Monday’s game will go a long way toward determining the Rams’ postseason chances, but before we get into who they should root for, let’s take a look at the current playoff picture.

  1. West: 49ers (10-2)
  2. South: Saints (10-2)
  3. North: Packers (9-3)
  4. East: Cowboys (6-6)
  5. Wild card: Seahawks (9-2)
  6. Wild card: Vikings (8-3)

In the hunt

Rams (7-5)
Bears (6-6)

As difficult as it is for the Rams and their fans to root for a division rival, it’s absolutely necessary on Monday night. Los Angeles needs the Seahawks to beat the Vikings to improve their playoff odds.

According to the New York Times’ playoff machine, the Rams currently have a 20% chance to make the postseason. If the Seahawks win tonight, that number will increase to 26% – not a significant amount, of course, but any improvement is a plus.

However, if the Vikings win, the Rams’ odds will decrease to just 13%. The reason is obvious, too.

With a win, Minnesota will push two games clear of the Rams for the sixth wild-card spot. It’ll drop the Seahawks back to 9-3, too, but the Rams have already lost to the Seahawks and face them next week. If the Vikings lose, they’ll only be one game ahead of Los Angeles, which isn’t an insurmountable deficit to overcome.

In that scenario, the Rams would need to win in Week 14 against the Seahawks and the Vikings would need to lose to Detroit in order for Los Angeles to slide into the No. 6 seed. Again, something that isn’t impossible.

But it all starts with the Vikings losing tonight. If they win, the Rams would need to beat the Seahawks and Cowboys, and Minnesota would need to lose to the Lions and Chargers. Week 16 and 17 would then be in the Rams’ hands, but they’d much prefer to take control of the sixth seed next week.
