Seahawks: Notes from Pete Carroll’s Labor Day press conference

Here are a few notes from Carroll heading into Week 1.

Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll just wrapped up a press conference following his team’s practice on Labor Day.

In the spirit of the holiday, we’ll keep these short and sweet. Here are a few notes from Carroll heading into Week 1.

Seahawks name three captains

Starting quarterback Russell Wilson, middle linebacker Bobby Wagner and linebacker/fullback Nick Bellore have been named the team captains for the 2021 season.

Only two players are unvaccinated

Carroll says that only two players on Seattle’s 53-man roster and 16-man practice squad are unvaccinated. He says he’s “pleased” with the number.

Duane Brown ready to play Week 1

The hold-in is over. Veteran left tackle Duane Brown returned to practice today after not participating during training camp. Carroll says he will be starting Week 1 against the Colts.

As for his contract, ESPN reports that Seattle doesn’t plan to extend Brown but discussions are ongoing. Adjustments to his 2021 money may be in the cards.

CB Tre Brown, TE Colby Parkinson still out

Fourth-round draft pick Tre Brown is one of several new faces in Seattle’s cornerback room. He’s currently out with a knee injury, though. Carroll has said there’s no timeline for his return and expects him to be out some time.

Tight end Colby Parkinson is also still out.

The team promoted TE Tyler Mabry from the practice squad to the active roster today to help.

Center competition still unsettled

Carroll also commented on the odd situation at the center position. On the subject of the injured Ethan Pocic and the rising Kyle Fuller, Carroll said hopefully both have a chance, whatever that means.

Nickel spot open-ended

On the subject of the slot defender competition, Carroll also wouldn’t reveal his plans. He said it’s not necesarily true that Marquise Blair or Ugo Amadi will be holding that spot.

Everything we know about Chargers’ loss to Seahawks in preseason finale

Recapping the Chargers’ preseason finale against the Seahawks.

To cap off the preseason, the Chargers were shut out by the Seahawks by the score of 27-0.

To recap Saturday’s matchup, here is everything we know:

It was over when….

Cody Barton got to Chase Daniel untouched to knock the football loose, and Marquise Blair was there to catch it in the air and take it back for six. Following that, the Chargers had no answer on both sides of the ball.

Keys of the game

It was another lackluster performance by the offense, as they only totaled 157 yards.

The offensive line gave up five sacks.

Only one field goal was attempted, coming in the second quarter by Tristan Vizcaino, which was missed from 47 yards out.

The two teams combined for 19 penalties, some of which were unnecessary.

3 stars of the game

LB Nick Niemann: 13 total tackles, 1 sack, tackle for loss

EDGE Chris Rumph: 4 tackles. 3 tackles for loss, 2 QB hits, 1 sack

RB Larry Rountree III: 6 carries, 27 yards, 2 catches, 8 yards

Quick-hitters

Neither Easton Stick or Chase Daniel did anything standout to separate themselves from one another. Both quarterbacks had their highs and lows, but they weren’t given any favors as the offensive line was manhandled for the majority of the night. At this point, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the team carry three signal-callers.

When he fully recovers, Justin Jackson will likely resume his role as the second running back to Austin Ekeler but Rountree is the one who did enough to be given a decent-sized role with his performances. Joshua Kelley, on the other hand, was inefficient running the football. Kelley could very well be on the chopping block.

The offensive line struggled as a whole to give both quarterbacks time to throw and create any lanes in the running game. However, it was Trey Pipkins who struggled the most, as he gave up a sack and a few pressures, along with committing a pair of false start penalties. Pipkins didn’t do anything in the summer to help himself to be the swing tackle, which is why he could very well be on his way out.

Looking to solidify the final wide receiver spot, it was Michael Bandy who made his case, catching five of his seven targets for 27 yards. K.J. Hill, Joe Reed and Jason Moore did not suit up for the game.

There wasn’t anyone from the interior part of the defensive line who separated themselves. Undrafted free agent Forrest Merrill flashed here and there, but we didn’t see much action from the other guys up front. Linval Joseph, Jerry Tillery, Justin Jones and Christian Covington but who fills the other two spots remains to be seen.

The lack of push from the defensive line led to the Seahawks having plenty of success on the ground, but neither did the slew of missed tackles from the second and third level.

Speaking of missed tackles, Brandon Facyson had a couple in the open field, as well an underwhelming performance in coverage. Facyson was slated to serve as the main backup, but his showing left a lot to be desired.

Kemon Hall, on the other hand, was a bright spot in the secondary.

The kicking battle was one of the main storylines, but given the lack of offensive production there wasn’t a lot of action in that department. Michael Badgley had the slight leg up entering the game, but Vizcaino’s missed field goal in the second quarter might’ve solidified the coach’s decision.

The score in preseason games does not matter. However, you’re able to evaluate team’s depth charts and for the Chargers, they’re lacking that at vital positions, specifically along the offensive line. It’ll be interesting to see if they dip into the free agency pool.

What’s next?

The Chargers will need to have their 53-man roster finalized by this upcoming Tuesday. Los Angeles opens the regular season against The Washington Football Team on Sept. 12 at 10 am PT.

Seahawks sign former Cardinals tight end Ian Bunting

According to a report by Ian Rapoport at NFL Network, the team has signed Ian Bunting to take Willson’s place.

The Seattle Seahawks needed another tight end on the roster after the sudden retirement of Luke Willson yesterday.

According to a report by Ian Rapoport at NFL Network, the team has signed Ian Bunting to take Willson’s place.

Bunting (6-foot-7, 252 pounds) played his college ball at California, where he posted 29 catches and 319 yards but no touchdowns. He went undrafted and has spent some time with the Indianapolis Colts and the Arizona Cardinals but hasn’t been in an NFL game as of yet.

He will compete for a spot on the roster with the other tight ends on the bottom end of the depth chart, including Cam Sutton and Tyler Mabry.

Seahawks cut TE Luke Willson, who announces his retirement

Well, that reunion was a short one.

Well, that reunion was a short one.

Just one day after signing former tight end Luke Willson (his fourth stint with the team) the Seattle Seahawks released him. No reason was given with the announcement, but it became clear why pretty soon after. In a post he shared on social media, Willson has announced his retirement from the sport. Willson claims that an experience with a pericardial effusion this offseason made him change his perspective and re-evaluate his future.

Must have been a tough practice, yesterday.

If this is indeed the end of Willson’s NFL career, he walks away with 111 catches, 1,307 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Seattle signed Willson to address their depth issues at tight end. Colby Parkinson is dealing with a foot injury and is expected to miss some time. Other free agent tight ends the Seahawks might consider signing include Tyler Eifert, Seth Devalve, Tim Tebow and Trey Burton.

Seahawks trading conditional seventh-round pick to Texans for CB John Reid

According to a report by Tom Pelissero at NFL Network, Seattle is trading a conditional seventh-round pick to the Houston Texans in exchange for cornerback John Reid.

The Seattle Seahawks clearly needed more help at the cornerback position before the start of the 2021 NFL season. Today, they’re getting some courtesy of a trade by general manager John Schneider.

According to a report by Tom Pelissero at NFL Network, Seattle is trading a conditional seventh-round pick to the Houston Texans in exchange for cornerback John Reid.

Reid was a fourth-round pick by Houston in the 2020 NFL draft. He played 13 games as a rookie, putting in 145 snaps on defense (13%) and 96 on special teams (22%). Reid posted 13 combined tackles and one pass defensed during his time on the field.

He joins a cornerback rotation that’s extremely unsettled for this late in the calendar year. Ahkello Witherspoon, Damarious Randall, Tre Brown, Tre Flowers and D.J. Reed could all get significant playing time during this coming season. Reid won’t solve all their DB problems, but at least he’ll bring a little more depth.

Seahawks roster tracker: CB Pierre Desir is being released

The Seahawks are releasing cornerback Pierre Desir, according to a report by Ian Rapoport at NFL Network.

The Seahawks are releasing cornerback Pierre Desir, according to a report by Ian Rapoport at NFL Network.

Desir has bounced around a lot since the Browns picked him in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL draft. He put in two years in Cleveland, three with the Colts and one each with the Ravens, Chargers and Jets. This was Desir’s second stint in Seattle – he spent part of the 2016 season on their practice squad. All together, he’s appeared in 73 career games, totaling eight interceptions and 200 solo tackles.

Desir’s release is likely to make room for tight end Luke Willson, who is expected to re-sign with the Seahawks.

NFL free agency: Luke Willson expected to sign with Seahawks again

According to a report by Ian Rapoport at NFL Network, free agent tight end Luke Willson is expected to sign with his former team.

The Seattle Seahawks are a bit thin at tight end right now. As they have several times before, they’ll look to a familiar face to help fill that void.

According to a report by Ian Rapoport at NFL Network, free agent tight end Luke Willson is expected to sign with his former team. Willson hinted as much with this A+ Twitter post.

Seattle is down a few tight ends with Colby Parkinson out due to a foot injury. Gerald Everett and Tyler Mabry are also hurt.

All together, Willson has spent seven years in a Seahawks uniform, plus brief stints in Detroit and Baltimore. It’s difficult to project where he’d fit in on the current depth chart given all the moving pieces.

Seattle’s roster is currently at the max of 80 players after yesterday’s transactions, so they will have to make a corresponding move in order to make room for Willson.
