Three-way tie for lead, Rory McIlroy’s water trouble and more from Saturday at 2024 Cognizant Classic

Catch up on third-round action here.

Moving day has come and gone and now it’s time to crown a winner at the Cognizant Classic in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, the first of four straight tournaments in the Sunshine State.

With 18 holes left at PGA National’s Champion Course, Shane Lowry, David Skinns and Austin Eckroat lead the way at 13 under, three shots clear of five players at 10 under (Jacob Bridgeman, Min Woo Lee, Martin Laird, Kevin Yu and Victor Perez).

In four previous starts on Tour this season, Skinns failed to make a weekend.

As for Lowry, this showing isn’t a surprise. He lives locally and has finished inside the top five here each of the last two seasons. Eckroat has made the cut in four of his previous five starts this season, but has yet to finish inside the top 20.

If you missed any of Saturday’s action, no worries, we have you covered. Here’s everything you need to know from the third round of the Cognizant Classic.

BYU suddenly clinging to bowl eligibility hopes

Nobody saw this coming in Provo this fall…

After beating Baylor in overtime on the second Saturday of September, [autotag]BYU[/autotag] was 2-0 and knocking on the door of the top 10 in both the USA TODAY Coaches Poll and AP Poll.  Things since then haven’t gone according to plan for the Cougars, however.

BYU was routed the following week at Oregon before rebounding with wins over Wyoming and Utah State to close September.

The Cougars haven’t won since.

Notre Dame largely controlled the Shamrock Series contest against BYU before letting them back in the game late before holding on for a 28-20 victory.  Since then Arkansas (52-35) and Liberty (41-14) both put whoopings on the Cougars.

BYU closed their October to-forget with another loss, this one a 27-24 defeat at the hands of East Carolina as they allowed over six yards per carry in their latest loss that puts them at 4-5 overall.

Notre Dame fans can relate to BYU supporters as some outlets (I’m looking at you, USA TODAY Sports College Football Preview) had the Cougars in the preseason top 10 but with just three games to play a bowl game is far from a sure thing.

BYU travels to Boise State next week before finally reaching their bye week.  They close the year with games against Utah Tech (yes, that’s a real program) and Stanford.  The Cougars will have to go 2-1 over their last three to become bowl-eligible, something few if any saw coming this preseason.

Not that Notre Dame is in a position to compare their best wins to others for anything of real significance this season, but that victory over a ranked opponent at the start of the month looks more and more like another close call against a mediocre foe with each passing week.

College baseball: NC State evens series with Notre Dame

NC State was too much in the batters box and in the field as they evened the series at 1.

The following is courtesy of the Notre Dame athletic department:

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Notre Dame Fighting Irish (26-18, 14-12 ACC) fell to NC State 5-1 in game two of the three game series at Frank Eck Stadium on Friday, May 5. The Irish will look to take the series in the final game on Saturday, May 6.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Wolfpack homered in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead and after tacking on another run in the top of the third, NC State led 2-0 going into the bottom frame.

Estevan Moreno led off for the Irish in the bottom of the third, singling through the left side to get the Irish offense started. Carter Putz put the Irish on the board with a groundout RBI to score Moreno and bring the Irish within one at 2-1 heading into the fourth.

Both the Irish and the Wolfpack were held scoreless in the next four innings, until NC State recorded another two runs in the top of the eighth off of their second home run of the day. The Wolfpack extended their lead to 5-1 in the eighth and despite the Irish’s late efforts, NC State would go on to take game two.

Vinny Martinez finished the day 2-for-4 with a base hit and a double. Estevan Moreno was 2-for-3 from the plate, recording Notre Dame’s only run of the day. Blake Hely started on the mound, pitching 7.1 innings, striking out six batters and allowing four runs on six hits. He was relieved by Justin Moore, who pitched 1.0 inning, allowing one run on two hits. Ryan Lynch and Sammy Cooper also saw action on the mound in the ninth inning.

The Irish return to Frank Eck Stadium to take on NC State in the final game of the series on Sunday, May 6 at 2:00pm for their final ACC game at home this season.

Super Bowl LVII: Staff Predictions

Who do you have winning on Sunday?

Football season ends on Sunday when the Eagles and Chiefs battle in Super Bowl LVII. Both are looking for their second title in the past six seasons.

Only one former Notre Dame player is on either roster. Quarterback [autotag]Ian Book[/autotag] is the third stringer for the Eagles. Forty-five former Fighting Irish players have won a Super Bowl. Will Book become No. 46? As predicted by most, Book is the first quarterback from the 2021 draft class to reach Super Bowl Sunday.

Here is what the Fighting Irish Wire squad sees happening as the 2022 NFL season comes to an end.
