Aspen Ladd vs. Sara McMann scratched from UFC Fight Night 210 after weight miss

Aspen Ladd’s inability to make weight has caused another one of her fights to be canceled.

[autotag]Aspen Ladd[/autotag]’s inability to make weight has caused another one of her fights to be canceled.

Ladd (9-3 MMA, 4-3 UFC) came in two pounds heavy for her scheduled women’s bantamweight bout with [autotag]Sara McMann[/autotag] (13-6 MMA, 7-6 UFC) at UFC Fight Night 210 on Saturday at the UFC Apex, and as a result the bout has been scrapped.

UFC officials announced the news following Friday’s UFC Fight Night 210 official weigh-in session.

It’s a bad look for Ladd, who has a well-documented history of poor weight cuts. In September 2018, Ladd missed weight and had a fight with Leslie Smith canceled after Smith declined to fight an overweight opponent. She had a frightening scene of trembling on the scale ahead of a July 2019 bout with Germaine de Randamie, which she ultimately hit the mark for, but suffered a quick TKO loss.

More recently, Ladd missed weight for a October 2021 fight with Macy Chiasson, which was canceled. She then competed at women’s featherweight for one fight – which she lost to Norma Dumont – before moving back down. She made women’s bantamweight for an April fight with Raquel Pennington before this latest incident.

UFC 257 results: Julianna Pena shakes off slow start, submits Sara McMann

Julianna Pena started slow, but when she picked up the pace, there was no stopping her.

It took [autotag]Julianna Pena[/autotag] a while to get up and running in her UFC 257 bout against [autotag]Sara McMann[/autotag] on Saturday night.

But once Pena (10-4 MMA, 5-3 UFC) did, it was like watching a sports car rev up. “The Ultimate Fighter 18” winner shook off a slow round, turned the tide in the second, then finished things with a rear-naked choke in the third. The time of the finish was 3:39 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi.

“It went exactly as I expected,” Pena said. “Sara McMann is the best wrestler in the division. I beat the best wrestler in the division, and now I want Amanda Nunes next.”

The first round was all for 2004 Olympic wrestling silver medalist McMann (12-6 MMA, 6-6 UFC). She came into the bout the all-time leader in takedowns in the women’s bantamweight division with 20 and wasted little time adding to her total. She transitioned from side control to a back take and nearly sunk in her hooks, then when she couldn’t quite get there, transitioned to top control, landing elbows along the way.

[lawrence-related id=583329,583246]

The second saw both fighters have their moments in a round again mostly fought on the ground, but as the round wore on, it was clear Pena was becoming stronger, even as she was on the bottom where she landed punch after punch as McMann tried to improve her position.

By the third, Pena had plainly taken over. She was aggressive from the outset, threw McMann to the mat, landed elbows aggressively as McMann turtled, then made a sweet transition to take her back and sink in the winning choke, the fourth submission victory of her career.

Pena has now won two of her past three bouts, while McMann has dropped three of her past four.

UFC 257 pre-event facts: Dustin Poirier, Conor McGregor bring legendary stats into rematch

The best facts and figures about UFC 257, which features a Dustin Poirier vs. Conor McGregor lightweight main event.

[jwplayer KXeKaSbo-FLu19iir]

The UFC closes out its “Fight Island” stint on Saturday with its first numbered event of the year. UFC 257 takes place at Etihad Arena on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi with a main card that airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and ESPN+.

A highly anticipated rematch takes center stage in the main event. Dustin Poirier (26-6 MMA, 18-5 UFC) and Conor McGregor (22-4 MMA, 10-2 UFC) will run it back more than six years after their first meeting at UFC 178 in September 2014, which “The Notorious” won by first-round TKO. There’s major differences this time around, though, because it will be contested at 155 pounds instead of 145 and is scheduled for five rounds.

The rematch concludes a notable lineup of fights. For more on the numbers, check below for 65 pre-event facts going into UFC 257.
