San Jose State QB Nick Starkel had 1,906 passing yards and 16 touchdown passes in seven games, while Ball State allowed over 250 passing yards in six of its seven games. The Spartans will be able to move the ball. That, in addition to the stronger competition in the Mountain West, San Jose State shouldn’t have a problem in this one. Take SAN JOSE STATE -375.

Against the spread (ATS)

The numbers this year are pretty overwhelming. San Jose is 6-0-1 ATS. Ball State is 4-3 ATS. The Cardinals are 1-0 in neutral-site games this season. Take SAN JOSE STATE -10 (-105).

Boise State will feel right at home at Sam Boyd Stadium, as the Broncos have won seven of their past eight games on this field. The Broncos have never lost to the Spartans in 14 all-time meetings, and the Spartans haven’t started a season 7-0 since 1939, so there is a lot of history going against San Jose State.

Boise State (-230) isn’t the unbeaten team entering this game, but the Broncos are still the kings, and it’s good to be king.

San Jose State (+185) is mighty tempting, as you can nearly double up, but the Spartans aren’t used to the championship limelight.

Against the spread (ATS)

SAN JOSE STATE +6.5 (-110) will come to play, and we’ll know early on if the Spartans are going to cover or not. Yes, Boise State has had success on this field before, but Starkel and the Spartans aren’t pushovers. This is a high-octane offense, and they can run the ball, too. RB Tyler Nevens has averaged 8.9 yards per carry, and he has gobbled up 336 yards in the past two outings.

San Jose State has all the tools to not only keep it close but win this one outright and erase decades of frustration against Boise State.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 55.5 (-105) seems like the safe and sound play. Both teams have a strong passing game, but San Jose State also has a good defense. The Spartans have allowed just 17.5 PPG to rank 13th in the nation. Boise State ranks sixth against the pass, so it could really keep Starkel’s numbers down. The Spartans are 9-1-1 ATS in their past 11 on the road as underdogs, while posting an impressive 15-5-2 ATS mark in the past 22 conference games. The Broncos are 4-1 ATS in the past five on the Smurf Turf, while going 4-0 ATS in their past four as home favorites.

San Jose State is very much a pass-first offense. Through two games, the Spartans rank fifth in the nation in passing yards per game (353.5) and 100th nationally in rushing yards per contest (89.2). Both figures are in line with last year’s full-season numbers. In 2020, Arkansas transfer QB Nick Starkel has stepped in as SJSU’s new signal-caller, and the results have been stellar: 73.7% completion percentage, 693 yards passing, 7 touchdowns and one interception.
San Diego State makes its bones on defense. The Aztecs ranked fifth in the nation a year ago, yielding just 287.8 yards per game. Through two games this fall, SDSU has allowed just 200.5 YPG. The Aztecs have a new head coach (Brady Hoke) and a new defensive coordinator (Kurt Mattix) in 2020, but the defense returns 8 of 11 starters.
The Aztecs are 7-0 straight up and 6-1 against the spread over the last seven games in this series. San Diego took last year’s meeting (Oct. 19) by a score of 27-17. San Jose State has scored just 45 points over the last five games combined.
