- San Jose State is very much a pass-first offense. Through two games, the Spartans rank fifth in the nation in passing yards per game (353.5) and 100th nationally in rushing yards per contest (89.2). Both figures are in line with last year’s full-season numbers. In 2020, Arkansas transfer QB Nick Starkel has stepped in as SJSU’s new signal-caller, and the results have been stellar: 73.7% completion percentage, 693 yards passing, 7 touchdowns and one interception.
- San Diego State makes its bones on defense. The Aztecs ranked fifth in the nation a year ago, yielding just 287.8 yards per game. Through two games this fall, SDSU has allowed just 200.5 YPG. The Aztecs have a new head coach (Brady Hoke) and a new defensive coordinator (Kurt Mattix) in 2020, but the defense returns 8 of 11 starters.
