  • Money line: Sharks +210 (bet $100 to win $210) | Avalanche -250 (bet $250 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Sharks +1.5 (-130) | Avalanche -1.5 (+105)
  • Over/Under: 6.5 (O: +100 | U: -120)

Sharks at Avalanche: Projected starting goalies

Devan Dubnyk (0-2-0, 3.29 GAA, .894 SV%) at Philipp Grubauer (4-2-0, 2.17 GAA, .919 SV%)

Dubnyk is likely to be tabbed for the start after G Martin Jones was pounded for five goals on just 19 shots before getting pulled early in the second period of Tuesday’s 7-3 loss in the front end of this back-to-back set. Dubnyk came on and yielded two goals on 23 shots in his 34:12 of action.

Grubauer turned aside 27 of the 30 Sharks shots he faced, and he received all the offensive support he could possibly need. He has allowed three or fewer goals in each of his past five starts since a setback in the opener against the St. Louis Blues Jan. 13 when he coughed up four goals.

Sharks at Avalanche: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Avalanche 5, Sharks 2

Money line (ML)

The Avalanche (-250) laying this kind of number is just too much, even though they’re a good bet to win. Look to the puck line instead for a much better value. PASS.

Against the spread (ATS)

The AVALANCHE -1.5 (+105) at near even-money is a much better play than risking two and a half times your return on the money line. While Colorado has covered the puck line in just two of its four wins to date, one of those covers came in Tuesday’s 7-3 win vs. the Sharks.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 6.5 (+100) is the lean, although play it lightly. Grubauer hasn’t been in a very giving mood, so Colorado will have to do the heavy lifting. While the Avs broke out for seven goals Tuesday, they have scored three or fewer in five of their seven games overall. The good news is that the Over is 7-3-1 in the past 11 meetings in Colorado, and 19-7-3 in the past 29 overall in this series.

San Jose Sharks at Colorado Avalanche odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Tuesday’s San Jose Sharks at Colorado Avalanche NHL betting odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The San Jose Sharks (3-3-0) visit the Colorado Avalanche (3-3-0) Tuesday at Ball Arena for a 9 p.m. ET puck drop. Below, we analyze the Sharks-Avalanche odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Sharks at Avalanche: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 7 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Sharks +185 (bet $100 to win $185) | Avalanche -225 (bet $225 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Sharks +1.5 (-150) | Avalanche -1.5 (+125)
  • Over/Under: 6 (O: -120 | U: +100)

Sharks at Avalanche: Projected starting goalies

Martin Jones (3-1-0, 3.06 GAA, .894 SV%) at Philipp Grubauer (3-2-0, 2.01 GAA, .923 SV%, 1 SO)

Jones has posted three victories in four outings, but offensive support has been the name of the game. He has allowed three or more goals in three of his outings. The good news is that he has picked up two victories in two shootouts, standing tall in the extra sessions.

Grubauer started off shaky with four goals allowed on 32 shots in an opening-season loss to the St. Louis Blues Jan. 13. Since then, he has coughed up just six total goals in four starts. His only loss during the span was last time out against the Anaheim Ducks, surrendering two goals on just 14 shots a 3-1 setback Sunday.

Sharks at Avalanche: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Avalanche 5, Sharks 3

Money line (ML)

The Avalanche (-225) will cost you more than two times your potential return on home ice, and that’s not a good long-term betting strategy. AVOID and look to the puck line instead.

Against the spread (ATS)

COLORADO -1.5 (+125) is a good bet on home ice. Sure, only one of Jones’ three victories covered the puck line, but he is due. Jones has been very giving, and Colorado will get to him for several goals. The Sharks have struggled in Denver, winning just twice in the past seven tries, and the home team is 37-14 in the previous 51 meetings.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 6 (-120) is generally the rule when these teams hook up, going 18-7-3 in the past 28 meetings. In addition, the Over has hit in four of six for the Sharks, while going 1-1 in two home games for the Avalanche. Colorado has actually had some difficulty finding the back of the net, which is surprising given its depth up front. Eventually the Avs will break out, and I think they have a good chance to score plenty against Jones.
