Padres’ Yu Darvish and Dodgers’ Yoshinobu Yamamoto make MLB postseason history for Japanese pitchers

This is so cool for both players.

The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres will face off in an elimination game at Dodger Stadium in Game 5 of the NLDS.

San Diego will send Yu Darvish to the mound while Los Angeles will have rookie Yoshinobu Yamamoto pitching in front of the home crowd. Darvish (7-3, 3.31 ERA) and Yamamoto (7-2, 3.00 ERA) both have excellent arms and will attempt to win the series for their squads.

This game is incredibly important as both franchises hope to secure a spot in the NLCS, but it is also significant for another reason. It is actually the first time in MLB history that two starting pitchers born in Japan will face off in the postseason.

Of course, the stakes are incredibly high for both organizations.

But this is also an incredibly cool moment for Darvish and Yamamoto, who were teammates for Japan during the 2023 World Baseball Classic when their nation won a gold medal.

Manny Machado used the savviest base running to legally block Freddie Freeman’s throw in Game 3

Yes, Machado was allowed to do that.

The San Diego Padres head into Wednesday’s Game 4 needing just one more win to eliminate their NL West rival Dodgers, and if they pull it off, it’ll be difficult to overlook that six-run second inning in Game 3.

One move, in particular, from Manny Machado started it all and left Dodgers fans crying foul.

After Machado led off that second inning with a single, Jackson Merrill’s grounder to Freddie Freeman at first base very well could have led to a fielder’s choice out at second. But some savvy base running from Machado sent the inning into a spiral for the Dodgers.

Machado knew where Freeman fielded the ball, so in a veteran move, he took a dramatically inside path to second base. At one point, Machado was even running in the infield grass. Now, it reasonably looked like an illegal play, but what Machado did there was within his right as a base runner.

According to MLB rules, an established base path exists between home and first base. Other than that, the base runner establishes his base path while advancing to the other bases. If he’s not deviating from that path to avoid a tag or intentionally blocking a throw, then the runner can take an inside route if he chooses. Machado didn’t intentionally block a throw either since his path was established before Freeman even threw the ball.

Dodgers fans weren’t happy about it, but Machado’s play was within the rules — and may have flipped the series.

Video of Manny Machado’s throw to Dodgers dugout that Dave Roberts called ‘unsettling’ had MLB fans so confused

Someone should check on the Dodgers.

The Dodgers and Padres didn’t need Sunday night’s Game 2 to add to an already-heated NL West rivalry, but it’s certainly playing out that way.

We already saw as tempers flared when Dodgers fans threw baseballs and other items in the direction of Padres players on Sunday. Yet, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts took exception with one throw in particular from Padres third baseman Manny Machado.

Speaking to reporters, Roberts called out Machado for throwing a baseball at the Dodgers dugout, calling the toss “unsettling” and wondering if Machado intended to hit him specifically with the throw. But by how Roberts described the incident, you would have expected a blatant throw on the line.

That wasn’t what the footage showed, though.

Machado did direct a baseball toward the Dodgers dugout, but the throw was on multiple bounces and seemed intended for the ball boy. And sure, it’s common courtesy to throw the warm-up baseballs towards your own dugout, but Machado clearly just bounced the throw. It wasn’t going to hurt anyone, and Roberts didn’t even notice it until Teoscar Hernández started shouting at the Padres third baseman.

The entire controversy had fans so confused after seeing the footage.

Video from the stands showed what led to the game-delaying incident between Jurickson Profar and Dodgers fans

Awful look for these Dodgers fans.

The Padres took Sunday’s Game 2 of the NLDS in emphatic fashion against the Dodgers, and if San Diego takes the series, it will likely look at that seventh inning as the true turning point.

The game was briefly delayed after a furious Jurickson Profar started to leave his spot in left field after a fan threw a baseball in his direction. Profar had already robbed a home run earlier in the game and trolled some fans in that left-field section. What was intended as some friendly competitive banter turned ugly when a fan decided to throw a ball at Profar.

We saw exactly how it unfolded in video taken from that left-field section of the stands.

Again, it started out as banter. A smiling Profar handed a ball to a fan who immediately chucked it back towards the infield. But when another fan threw a different baseball in Profar’s direction, the incident escalated. Security got involved and worked to eject someone from the section. We could also see Profar exchange words from a distance with fans in a different area.

Of course, had that first fan just kept the baseball, it probably would have prevented the entire delay from unfolding. There’s really no excuse to throw baseballs onto the field — even the visiting-team home runs should remain in the stands.

Game 2 showed why.

Why do the Padres wear a ‘PS’ heart patch on their jerseys?

Here’s why the San Diego Padres wear a PS patch on their jerseys.

You might have noticed an interesting patch on the San Diego Padres’ jerseys during the MLB playoffs. So, what are they?

The patch itself is a yellow heart with the letters “PS” stitched onto it in black. It memorializes the late Peter Seidler, who passed away in November 2023, the former chairman of the Padres. Seidler had been the chairman since 2012, when he, Peter O’Malley and Ron Fowler purchased the team from John Moores.

The Padres have been wearing the patch all season as a way to memorialize their late chairman who was near and dear to the San Diego community.

Jurickson Profar trolled Dodgers fans and the broadcast after stunningly robbing Mookie Betts of a home run

Everyone was fooled.

As amazing as it must be to hit a home run in the postseason, it’s tough to beat robbing someone of a home run as a visiting player. It’s the kind of moment that every outfielder dreams about, so you just know that Jurickson Profar had his reaction ready to go.

During Sunday’s Game 2 of the NLDS between the Padres and Dodgers, it looked like Mookie Betts had tied the game with a first-inning solo shot to left. Betts was in his home run trot. The Fox broadcast even displayed a home run graphic. Dodger Stadium was in a frenzy.

But no, it was all part of Profar’s plan. He had an entire stadium/broadcast/dugout fooled.

Profar leaped into the stands to make the catch over the left-field wall. But instead of immediately throwing the ball back, he faced the Dodgers fans and basically taunted them.

It was such a wild sequence, and after a catch like that, Profar earned the right to enjoy every second of it.

MLB fans loved seeing the classy moment that the Braves’ Michael Harris II shared with the Padres crowd

So much respect.

The Atlanta Braves saw their season come to an end on Wednesday after a two-game sweep in the wild-card series with the Padres. But Michael Harris II likely left San Diego with plenty of respect among Padres fans.

While much of the Braves lineup struggled to produce runs in the two games, Harris had himself an incredible series. He went 5 for 8 with a home run in the two games along with some stellar defense. And after he brought the Braves within a run of the Padres in Game 2, the ESPN cameras caught an awesome exchange between Harris II and Padres fans.

Harris went out of his way to give one Padres fan a baseball and then dapped up another fan.

We’re so used to seeing home fans torment visiting outfielders, particularly in the playoffs. But this series was clearly different.

Fans loved seeing that moment of respect play out in the postseason.

Fernando Tatis Jr. blasted Max Fried in the butt with a line drive

Ouch! That’s got to hurt.

The Atlanta Braves were fighting for their 2024 season on Wednesday night in San Diego against the Padres.

Pitcher Max Fried quite literally took one for the team during the MLB playoff elimination game, as Padres superstar Fernando Tatis Jr. accidentally hit a line drive right into Fried’s backside.

It’s hard to tell exactly where Tatis accidentally hit Fried’s posterior region, whether it was right on the butt or on his hip. However, it sure didn’t look pleasant.

It was a solid hit by Tatis, but equal kudos to Fried for hanging in there after getting accidentally blasted in the buttocks region.

That’s playoff baseball for you!
