Former Jax State second baseman is headed to the Plains

Javon Hernandez led the ASUN in batting average last season by hitting .397.

[autotag]Butch Thompson[/autotag] has wasted no time beefing up his roster for the 2024 season and is working even harder at it now that five Auburn signees have been drafted by MLB teams.

The Tigers have been active in the transfer portal already and have added former Jacksonville State second baseman [autotag]Javon Hernandez[/autotag]. Hernandez is the second former Gamecock to announce his transfer to Auburn, following outfielder [autotag]Mason Maners[/autotag]’ lead.

Hernandez will come to the Plains as a senior. The Danbury, Connecticut native posted a batting average of .397 in 2023 – a mark that placed him 27th nationally and first in the ASUN Conference.

He also recorded seven home runs, 49 RBI, 89 hits, and 21 extra-base hits. Additionally, Hernandez led the Gamecocks in stolen bases with 11.

Hernandez is the fourth player to announce intent to transfer to Auburn. One transfer commit, [autotag]Sam Mongelli[/autotag], was recently drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 10th round of the MLB draft.

Dodgers select Auburn transfer in 10th round of MLB draft

Sam Mongelli committed to transfer to Auburn before the MLB draft. Now, he finds himself at a crossroads.

Following a stellar season at Sacred Heart which saw him win Northeast Conference Player of the Year, infielder [autotag]Sam Mongelli[/autotag] decided that he would transfer to Auburn to continue his career within the SEC.

Monday, he was selected in the 10th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2023 MLB draft. Now, Mongelli is at a crossroads. Does he begin his professional career? Or does he stay in college and take the chance of boosting his draft stock for next season?

For Auburn’s sake, they hope that he remains a collegiate athlete. His stats are impressive, as he won conference Player of the Year by smashing 20 home runs and plating 54 runs during his senior campaign.

Not only would his plate presence be a contributing factor, but his infield experience would be beneficial as both [autotag]Cole Foster[/autotag] and [autotag]Bryson Ware[/autotag] were also selected in the MLB draft on Tuesday by the San Francisco Giants and Philadelphia Phillies respectively. Having an experienced infielder would fill a void left by those two skilled athletes.

The slot value for the 310th overall pick is projected to be $164,600. If negotiations between Mongelli and the Dodgers do not work out, expect Mongelli to join the Tigers roster ahead of fall camp.

Auburn baseball adds Sacred Heart infielder Sam Mongelli

Mongelli smashed 20 home runs and plated 54 runs last season at Sacred Heart.

[autotag]Butch Thompson[/autotag] has already started to gear up for next season. Friday, the Tigers added former Sacred Heart infielder [autotag]Sam Mongelli[/autotag].

Mongelli has played four seasons with the Pioneers and will join Auburn as a graduate transfer.

Mongelli says that Auburn’s yearly goal of going to the College World Series is a driving factor behind his decision to spend his final season on the Plains.

“Culture-wise and competition-wise, they are a group of guys that really want to get to Omaha and win the thing. That’s something that drives me every day,” Mongelli said in an interview with Auburn Undercover. “That’s something I want to achieve in my life before I’m done. I know how much of a passion they have to get there and to win it. It lit a fire under me. I knew it was the right fit for sure.”

2023 was a big season for the Marlboro, New York native as he hit .402 with 97 hits, 20 home runs, 54 RBI, and a slugging percentage of .743.

Throughout his four seasons with the program, Mongelli averaged .341 with 150 hits, 26 home runs, 78 RBI, a slugging percentage of .593, and a fielding percentage of .907.

There are likely going to be some changes within the Auburn lineup heading into next season and Mongelli will likely play a significant role.
