Everything the players had to say after Texas A&M’s 38-10 win over ACU

Hear what Ainias Smith, Sam Mathews (12th Man), and McKinnley Jackson had to say after Texas A&M’s 38-10 win over ACU.

Texas A&M (7-4, 5-3 SEC) finished off their 2023 home slate in style after defeating the visiting ACU Wildcats 38-10 on Saturday afternoon, as senior day in front of the 12th Man continues to be a special outing, especially on the anniversary of the 1999 Aggie Bonfire collapse, which occurred 24 years ago to the day on Nov. 18.

Honoring the 12 Aggies who tragically passed, a remembrance ribbon was added to the A&M logo at midfield. So, how would Texas A&M respond just a week after defeating Mississippi State 51-10? Well, it could have been a better start. In the offense’s first possession, quarterback Jaylen Henderson, who was making his second consecutive start, sustained a hit to his throwing arm, causing a pick-six the other way, resulting in an early 7-0 deficit.

Tying the game at seven all after a solid 75-yard drive touchdown drive, things stalled out as the Wildcats defense continued to pressure Henderson from all sides, and if it wasn’t for wide receivers Moose Muhammad (4 receptions, 104 yards, 1 TD) and Jahdae Walker’s (4 receptions, 88 yards) huge games through the air, who knows how things could have transpired.

Taking a 17-7 lead into halftime, a quick 49-yard dime to Muhammad early in the 3rd quarter sealed the game as the Aggie’s defense held ACU to just 149 passing yards and 93 yards on the ground, only allowing three points on offense.

In the first game after Jimbo Fisher’s firing, interim head coach Elijah Robinson, accompanied by Ainias Smith, the 12th Man Sam Mathews, and McKinnley Jackson, spoke to the media to reflect on the victory, as next Saturday’s early season finale on the road vs. LSU looms large. Here is what all three players had to say after the win.

‘It feels different in the locker room… We are ready for Miami.’ Sam Mathews, Josh DeBerry and Shemar Stewart preview Texas A&M’s week 2 road test vs. Miami

Here is everything Sam Mathews, Josh DeBerry and Shemar Stewart said ahead of the Aggies road test vs. Miami

Texas A&M kicked off their 2023 college football season in exhilarating fashion against New Mexico on Saturday night, downing the visiting Lobo’s 52-10 behind starting quarterback Conner Weigman’s incredibly efficient performance, throwing for 236 yards for 18/23 (78% completion). Five touchdowns without an interception, becoming the first player in Aggie history with five touchdowns in a season opener.

Standing out more than any player on the field, sophomore wide receiver Noah Thomas is on his way to a breakout season, finishing the night with six receptions for 74 yards and three touchdowns. In comparison, star receiver Evan Stewart led the offense with eight receptions for 115 yards and two touchdowns on the night, as new OC Bobby Petrino’s play-calling has been welcomed with open arms as the Aggie’s up-tempo offense with multiple formation looks was truly a sight for sore eyes. On Saturday night, the studs were indeed fed.

Defensively, the Aggies limited the Lobos to 91 yards on the ground and 222 total yards. At the same time, Boston College transfer cornerback Josh DeBerry led the team with ten tackles, seven solo tackles, one sack, and an interception on the night.

On Monday, Linebacker, special teamer, and 12th Man Sam Mathews, alongside cornerback Josh DeBerry and defensive end Shemar Stewart, spoke to the media to reflect on the Aggies’ 52-10 win over New Mexico while shifting focus to their crucial week two road test vs. Miami on Saturday afternoon.

Here is everything all five players had to say before taking on the Hurricanes on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 2:30 p.m. on ABC.

‘He exemplifies all of the things as a person:’ Jimbo Fisher on naming Sam Mathews as 12th Man, facing New Mexico, and more

In his weekly SEC media teleconference, Jimbo Fisher spoke on naming Sam Mathews the 12th Man, facing an intriguing New Mexico team in Week 1, and more.

Texas A&M is mere days away from kickstarting its 2023 college football campaign in a season opener against New Mexico. Kickoff is set for Saturday, Sep. 2 at 6 p.m. CT. Per standard procedure, head coach Jimbo Fisher took a moment to speak with the SEC media.

In addition to delving into the Lobos, who boasts a new offensive coordinator and quarterback tandem, Fisher spoke on the necessary components to building a championship football program. Among the key highlights were recruiting individuals with a passion for learning and a natural drive to be a leader. If a recruit doesn’t possess those traits, chances are slim that they can withstand SEC competition.

Fisher also spoke about picking Sam Mathews as the 12th Man for the Aggies, which speaks to the values and traits that the senior linebacker embodies daily. After naming Conner Weigman as the starting quarterback for Week 1, he also added context to the position battle and how the two passers continue to make each other better each day.

Here is everything Jimbo Fisher discussed during his 10-minute stint with the media on Wednesday.

Texas A&M has named senior LB Sam Mathews as the program’s new 12th Man

Head Coach Jimbo Fisher has officially named senior linebacker Sam Mathews as Texas A&M’s 12th Man for the 2023 college football season

Texas A&M’s 12th Man tradition is simply the backbone of Aggie pride and one of the greatest traditions the college football realm has to offer. For those outside the College Station beltway, every current and former Texas A&M student is considered a part of the 12th Man. Still, on the gridiron, one player, usually unknown to the masses as a walk-on athlete, is chosen to dawn the number before each season.

For the 2023 season, senior linebacker Sam Mathews has received the honor. As a proven commodity on special teams during the 2022 campaign, Mathews also saw time as a linebacker against Florida, recording six tackles while showing impressive athleticism and pursuit.

Mathew’s trek to Aggieland started during the 2021 season after brief stints at Harding University (AR) and one season at Blinn Junior College. After his contributions in 2022, Mathews was named Special Teams MVP and the Strength & Conditioning Specialist Award.

Assuming that Mathews will continue his special team’s duties, the 12th Man tradition will live on, and I do not doubt that he will proudly represent the Maroon and White for the season’s entirety.
