Report: Browns bring in XFL TE Sal Cannella for a workout

The Browns continue to dig through XFL talent.

The Cleveland Browns have not been strangers in terms of looking at XFL talent that could help their roster. They have had players like cornerback Luc Barqoo and XFL Defensive Player of the Year Pita Taumoepenu in for tryouts, and now they have tried out tight end Sal Cannella as well (according to Aaron Wilson).

Cannella racked up 415 yards on 42 catches for the Arlington Renegades this season. The Auburn product has spent time with the Green Bay Packers as well but has never made an NFL roster. While the Browns may opt not to make a move, they have taken a step in the direction of keeping close tabs on the XFL.

What to know about new Packers TE Sal Cannella

Everything you need to know about new Packers tight end Sal Cannella.

The Green Bay Packers filled up their 90-man roster by officially signing tight end Sal Cannella on Thursday. The move was first reported by Bill Huber of SI.com.

Cannella, who worked out for the team on Wednesday, will wear No. 80. He is the eighth tight end on the Packers roster.

Here’s a quick introduction to the Packers’ newest player:

Packers signing All-USFL tight end Sal Cannella to 90-man roster

The Packers are signing TE Sal Cannella, who was an All-USFL player after catching 34 passes for the New Orleans Breakers in 2022.

The Green Bay Packers are adding one of the stars of the USFL to the team’s 90-man roster ahead of training camp.

According to Bill Huber of SI.com, the Packers are signing tight end Sal Cannella, who led the USFL in receiving yards by a tight end and was named to the All-USFL team in 2022.

Cannella, 25, was one of four players to try out for the Packers on Wednesday. He previously played in the NFL for the Miami Dolphins and Chicago Bears.

Cannella (6-5, 230) went undrafted out of Auburn in 2020. He’ll fill the 90th roster spot in Green Bay.

As a member of the New Orleans Breakers of the USFL in 2020, Cannella caught 34 passes for 368 yards and two touchdowns. He finished sixth among all USFL players in catches and 11th in receiving yards, and he also set the league’s record for receiving yards in a game by a tight end with 154.

In Green Bay, Cannella should get a legitimate opportunity to compete for a roster spot at tight end, a position lacking depth and where starter Robert Tonyan is still recovering from an ACL injury.

At Auburn’s pro day in 2020, Cannella ran the 40-yard dash in 4.74 seconds, hit 33.5″ in the vertical, finished the three-cone drill in 7.15 seconds and put up 20 reps on the bench press.

Former Auburn cornerback signs with USFL’s Houston Gamblers

Tigers add another player to the USFL as former cornerback signs with the Gamblers.

On Thursday, the Houston Gamblers from the newly-established USFL added former Auburn defensive back [autotag]Ryan White[/autotag] to their roster. After releasing a previous draft pick in Howard Wilson, they made the decision to add White to their roster.

The USFL consists of eight different teams that will play all their games in Birmingham, Alabama at UAB’s Progressive Stadium. The teams will be split into two divisions. There will be 10 games in the regular season. The playoffs will consist of the top two teams from each division in a semifinals round and the winners will face off in the league’s first championship.

White spent a total of four seasons with the Tigers. He played from 2010-2013. In 2010, he was a part of a national championship team. Although he didn’t have a large role on that team, he would finish his Auburn career having played in 31 games. It is also important to note that White accumulated 83 tackles, 1 interception, and 10 pass defelctions while he was on the Plains. The Florida native signed with the Packers practice squad in 2015, but he never saw any on-field action. Now, he joins the Gamblers with hopes of making a name for himself.

Several other players that will compete in the USFL are John Franklin III, [autotag]Calvin Ashley[/autotag], [autotag]Christian Tutt[/autotag], and [autotag]Sal Cannella[/autotag]. Former Auburn offensive tackle [autotag]Marquell Harrell[/autotag] was slated to join the Michigan Panthers prior to being placed on reserve/did not report. The Tigers will be well represented in the new league. White is the only former Auburn player on the Gamblers. It will be interesting to see how he does with the new opportunity.

Former Auburn tight end coming to Auburn vs Georgia

Welcome back!

A familiar face is returning to the Plains this weekend.

Former Auburn tight end Salvatore Cannella is coming back to Auburn to watch his former team take on the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs, per his Twitter page.

Cannella caught 25 passes for 330 yards and five touchdowns over the course of his three-year career with the Tigers. Cannella launched his own streetwear clothing collection, ‘NNella,’ back in 2019. He signed former Auburn-turned UCF receiver Nate Craig-Meyers to a NIL deal to support the brand earlier this year.

No. 18 Auburn takes on No. 2 Georgia this Saturday at 2:30 p.m. on CBS. It is the 125th installment of the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry.

Top prospects from The Spring League for the Browns to consider

The Spring League got just 3 weeks in before COVID canceled it, but several prospects showed enough to get looks in the NFL

COVID-19 has taken another football league from us! First the XFL and now The Spring League. The Spring League, which occurred in the fall this year, was only able to complete three weeks before being forced to cancel due to COVID complications. With that said, there were a few players who shined and clearly deserve a longer look for the NFL.

Shea Patterson, QB, Blues, 6-2, 212 pounds:

Most fans are already aware of Patterson due to him being the starting quarterback at Michigan last season and going undrafted in the 2020 NFL Draft. Patterson was largely viewed as a mid-round prospect, but his lack of accuracy was obviously too much for teams to overlook. He went undrafted and was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs and eventually cut due to roster cutdowns.

Patterson is only 23 years old and there is still time for him to improve. He already looks like a different quarterback. He has gained some positive weight and is still an electric runner, but the most important thing is his accuracy looks improved. He is not going to start in the NFL, but he is young enough and athletic enough for someone to take a deeper look. He ended the season as the second leading passer with a 61% completion rate, 571 yards and six touchdowns.

Channing Stribling, CB, Generals, 6-2, 180 pounds:

Stribling already had a shot with the Cleveland Browns as he was signed as a free agent after the 2017 draft, but he looks like a more properly equipped corner in 2020. Despite only being 25 years old, Stribling has bounced around with five NFL teams, a stint in the now-defunct AAF and XFL. Stribling was re-signed by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CFL, but decided to opt out of his contract due to that league canceling its season.

Stribling has always had the ideal length and aggressiveness to play in the NFL, but his lack of acceleration and stiff hips made him a liability. He looked to have cleaned up some of those issues in The Spring League, but that can be a hard thing to judge due to the step down in competition. Stribling is still worth a shot.

Matthew Sexton, WR, Aviators, 5-11, 175 pounds:

Sexton went undrafted out of Eastern Michigan in 2020 and failed to receive a shot in the NFL, but after dominating in The Spring League it seems that may have been a mistake. Sexton is small but has excellent speed; the 4.44 forty time he registered at his pro day was no fluke. Sexton deserves an NFL shot and he has enough athleticism to at least contribute on special teams, especially as a returner.

Ricky Aguayo, K, Jousters, 6-0, 207 pounds:

Aguayo is the younger brother of famed Tampa Bay Buccaneer bust, Roberto Aguayo. Although he doesn’t have the illustrious collegiate career of his older brother, Ricky can hold his own. In week two, Aguayo nailed all five of his attempts including a 50-yarder. Wouldn’t be a bad prospect to bring in for a workout…

Sal Cannella, TE, Generals, 6-5, 228 pounds:

Cannella went undrafted out of Auburn and had very little production with only 10 receptions his senior season, but he was playing wide receiver for the Tigers. He appears to have bulked up and looks considerably more than the 228 pounds he was listed at in college. He didn’t receive an undrafted contract coming out, but after seeing the new an improved Cannella in The Spring League that may have been a mistake.

Bengals have eyes on a lesser-known TE ahead of 2020 draft

The Bengals have been in touch with one notable draft prospect.

[jwplayer 99PZYacN]

The Cincinnati Bengals might end up addressing tight end in the 2020 NFL draft regardless of what happens with free agent Tyler Eifert.

And it might be wise to remember the name Sal Cannella.

Despite playing at a program like Auburn, Cannella isn’t a household name. He finished last year with 10 catches for 188 yards and two scores, good for fifth on a team receiving chart that didn’t feature a player with 1,000 yards.

And yet, that resume sounds oddly familiar to a guy by the name of C.J. Uzomah, who didn’t have any notable stats before the Bengals drafted him back in the fifth round of the 2015 draft.

Per Cannella himself, via D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Bengals have been in touch.

If nothing else, it’s a small note to keep in mind on the chance the Bengals want some interesting upside at the position over the long term.
