Over/Under: Projecting New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees’ stats

Projecting Drew Brees’ 2020 passing statistics and how they match up with the over/under betting odds.

Looking forward to the 2020 NFL season, it’s time to start breaking down how individual players will do statistically. Today we focus on New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees’ projected passing numbers and how they match up against future odds at BetMGM sportsbook.

Drew Brees’ stats history

Brees is the most prolific and accurate passer in history. He holds the NFL career record for passing yards (77,416) and touchdown passes (547). He had 12 straight seasons of more than 4,000 passing yards (2006-’17), five times eclipsing 5,000-plus yards. However, he threw for less than 4,000 yards the last two seasons as he missed one game in 2018 and five games with a thumb injury last year. His per-game averages would have given him more than 4,250 yards each season if he had played in all 16.

Brees also recorded nine straight seasons with at least 30 touchdown passes from 2008-’16, but failed to reach that many two of the last three seasons.

Passing Yards: 4099.5 / OVER: -110 / UNDER: -110

Passing Touchdowns: 30.5 / OVER: -110 / UNDER: -110

The key for the 41-year-old Brees’ numbers will be his health. Last season was the first year he missed more than one game since 2003, so he has a history of durability. He has one of the best receivers in football in Michael Thomas, plus the Saints signed free agent WR Emmanuel Sanders. Passing yards should be in abundance again. However, with a running back like Alvin Kamara in goal-to-go situations, it is much more likely the Saints will run the ball. Plus, even with his fantastic numbers, it became clear that Brees’ arm is not what it was. To reach 4,100 passing yards, he will only have to average just a little more than 256 yards per game, lower than any per-game average for Brees since 2005. Even if he misses a game, he would only have to average 273.3 yards per game. For his passing yards, take the OVER.

Touchdown passes are another thing completely. He only had 27 in 2019, but that was in 11 games. Looking at that and his history, you have to also take the OVER for touchdown passes.

Are Seahawks playoff-bound or bust in the 2020 season?

The Seattle Seahawks are likely contenders this season and one of four teams NFL.com’s Marc Sessler believes are playoff-bound or bust.

The Seattle Seahawks have yet to step on the practice field this spring and are likely headed towards a virtual offseason in light of the coronavirus pandemic that has shut down NFL facilities around the league.

Seahawks general manager John Schneider and coach Pete Carroll are still days away from the 2020 NFL Draft, which will also be completely remote this season.

Still, NFL.com’s Marc Sessler believes Seattle is one of four teams who are playoff bound or bust in 2020.

“I refuse to count out the Seahawks, with Russell Wilson coming off an MVP-caliber campaign,” Sessler writes. “Signing veteran tight end Greg Olsen helps, but concern lingers over a club that produced fewer sacks than all but the Lions, Falcons and Dolphins in 2019 – especially if free agent Jadeveon Clowney winds up elsewhere.”

Regardless, the Seahawks find themselves in impressive company alongside the 49ers, Packers and Saints, who Sessler believes are the other three playoff or bust teams worth watching closely this year.

Will another team make Taysom Hill an offer before the NFL deadline?

The deadline for Taysom Hill to sign his RFA tender is Friday at 4 p.m. ET.
Teams can also sign Hill to an offer sheet before that deadline, but will anyone do it?.
If the Saints don’t match an offer from another team, they will recoup a first-round pick for losing Hill.
If Hill signs the tender and plays for the Saints, he’ll make $4.6 million in 2020

2020 NFL MVP Odds: Is Michael Thomas worth a bet?

Analyzing the betting odds to be named the NFL’s 2020 MVP, with a look at whether Michael Thomas is worthy of a bet this season.

Do you think New Orleans WR Michael Thomas has what it takes to win the 2020 NFL MVP?

Despite being months away from the NFL season, there are already odds for the 2020 NFL MVP. There are clear favorites and many long shots. Here we look at those MVP futures bets for the coming season and specifically Thomas.

Let’s examine his chances, the BetMGM NFL futures odds around it happening and whether or not Thomas is worth a bet.

Recent NFL MVP winners

The quarterback position dominates the award. A quarterback has won the last seven MVP awards and 12 of the last 13. The last five MVPs have been Baltimore Ravens’ Lamar Jackson (2019), Kansas City Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes (2018), then-New England Patriots’ Tom Brady (2017), Atlanta Falcons’ Matt Ryan (2016) and then-Carolina Panthers’ Cam Newton (2015).

These quarterbacks all led their teams to the postseason and almost all led the NFL in some significant passing statistic. Jackson led the league with 36 touchdown passes, while throwing for 3,127 yards and rushing for 1,206 yards. In 2018, Mahomes led the league with 50 passing TDs, while finishing second in passing yards (5,097). in 2017, Brady threw for 32 TDs and an NFL-best 4,577 passing yards.

Meanwhile, a wide receiver has never won the MVP since the Associated Press started handing out the award in 1957.

Michael Thomas’ 2020 NFL MVP odds

Thomas is a long shot at +10000, but is the favorite among all other receivers. Four wideouts check in at +12500. They are Davante Adams (Green Bay Packers), Odell Beckham Jr. (Cleveland Browns), Julio Jones (Atlanta Falcons) and Tyreek Hill (Chiefs).

Michael Thomas’ stats

In 2019, Thomas set an NFL single-season record with 149 receptions. His 1,725 receiving yards led the league and are the seventh-highest total in any season. He was the biggest offensive weapon on a Saints team that went 13-3 in the regular season and won the NFC South Division.

Is Michael Thomas worth a 2020 NFL MVP bet?

Unfortunately, history is against Thomas. He set NFL records last season and was the Offensive Player of the Year. However, even if he were to replicate those numbers in 2020, he probably wouldn’t get a single MVP vote. The votes would go to his quarterback, Drew Brees.

While the +10000 offers a payout of 100 times your investment, betting on Thomas is a bet against history.

How Did Drew Brees Perform vs. Notre Dame?

There was one thing Brees never did in his time with the Boilermakers, though, and that’s win at Notre Dame Stadium.  Here’s the Drew Brees career stat-lines versus the Fighting Irish:

In the wake of the news Drew Brees is heading to NBC Sports and having a role on Notre Dame telecasts once he retires from the NFL, I was curious how Brees fared against Notre Dame in his memorable time at Purdue.

Brees led Purdue to only their second appearance in a Rose Bowl back in 2000, a year he should have been awarded the Heisman Trophy over Chris Weinke if we’re being honest.  There was one thing Brees never did in his time with the Boilermakers, though, and that’s win at Notre Dame Stadium.  Here’s the Drew Brees career stat-lines versus the Fighting Irish:

Three starts (1998, 1999, 2000)
1-2 win/loss record
60/98 passing, 799 yards, five touchdown passes, four interceptions, one rushing touchdown

The games:
1998 – Notre Dame 31, Purdue 30
Notre Dame fell behind 14-0 and trailed 30-21 with under eight minutes to play before a Jim Sanson field goal with under a minute left eventually won it for the Irish.
Brees:  24 of 26 for 261 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions

1999 – Purdue 28, Notre Dame 23
Notre Dame jumped out to a 10-0 lead in West Lafayette before Brees guided the Boilermakers to victory.  He finished the afternoon with a rushing touchdown, a passing touchdown and ran in a two point conversion in the Purdue victory.
Brees:  24 of 40 passing for 317 yards, one touchdown pass, one interception and a two point conversion run

2000 – No. 21 Notre Dame 23, No. 13 Purdue 21
In Godsey We Tust…as long as the defense plays ridiculously well. That’s what happened on this afternoon in 2000 when a Shane Walton pick-six of Brees put the Irish up 14-0 in the first quarter.  The Irish wouldn’t find the end-zone again that afternoon but three Nick Setta field goals, one of which came as time expired, did the eventual Big Ten Champions in.
Brees:  13 of 22 passing for 221 yards, two touchdowns and one interception
