Colorado State has not been challenged this season, and when it was, it struggled mightily. In both times being an underdog, it failed to cover.

It lost at Colorado 93-65 as a 4-point road underdog and 68-56 to Penn State as a 4.5-point road underdog. The Rams’ defense ranks 170th in opponents’ points per game (68). They just aren’t where they need to be, especially against good opponents.

The Gaels are 2-2-1 as double-digit favorites and 2-1-1 as double-digit favorites at home. With one of the best defenses in the country, they should be able to limit the Rams, who wouldn’t have covered this spread against their other capable opponents.

However, it isn’t happening here, as Houston’s defense will wreak havoc on Saint Mary’s. The Cougars rank No. 1 in the nation with just 48.0 points allowed per game, while also limiting the opposition to 30.0% from the field and 18.5% from behind the 3-point line, both also the top marks in the country.

Over/Under

UNDER 118.5 (-105) is worth a look, but only play a half-unit.

The Cougars dropped triple digits last time out against Norfolk State, but Houston won’t be able to get out and run against a St. Mary’s team which allows just 57.5 PPG, 19th in the country.

March Madness: Saint Mary’s vs. UCLA odds, picks and predictions

The No. 5-seed Saint Mary’s Gaels (26-7) meet the No. 4 seed UCLA Bruins (26-7) Saturday for a second-round East Region NCAA Championship Tournament game. Tip-off from Moda Center in Portland, Ore., is slated for 7:10 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Saint Mary’s vs. UCLA odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Saint Mary’s trounced Indiana 82-53 Thursday and is 14-3 over its last 17 games. Two of those three losses were at the hands of West Coast Conference foe Gonzaga, the top-ranked team in the nation. The 53 points allowed against IU was impressive but not shocking. The nationally 16th-ranked Gaels have allowed just 60.3 points per game this season (ninth NCAA-I).

UCLA can nearly match those defensive numbers of late. The Bruins have yielded just 61.5 PPG in going 9-2 since Feb. 17. They allowed 53 in a first-round game against Akron which was too close for comfort (57-53). The nationally 12th-ranked Bruins shot a paltry 35.2% from the floor in that contest. UCLA’s previous eight wins (Feb. 17-March 11) were by an average of 17.1 points before Thursday’s close shave.

The mid-range game is a lean for UCLA. The Gaels aren’t weak in defending mid-range jumpers, but it’s not a relative strength either. The Bruins can gain some leverage there.

SMC can also be hurt by the 3-ball. UCLA is competent in that area but more so when it’s home at Pauley Pavilion and they don’t typically fire many attempts from the perimeter.

PASS on this price but UCLA at -145 or better would be worth a look.

Against the spread

The Gaels are 0-4 ATS in their last four NCAA Tournament games as underdogs. The Bruins are 6-1 ATS in their last seven NCAA Tournament games.

Teams that get to the line frequently become an issue for Saint Mary’s. UCLA’s numbers in that vein have generally been on the rise (although it only attempted 13 foul shots Thursday).

Peg the Bruins for some slight but positive margins in turnovers and rebounds and in a game looser on the score than what shows in the lined total. TAKE UCLA -2.5 (-115).

Over/Under

Both teams play at a slow pace. SMC plays at a slowest-15% pace, but their tempo figures have been trending faster of late.

No. 1 Gonzaga Bulldogs (24-2, 13-0 WCC) visit the No. 23 Saint Mary’s Gaels (23-6, 11-3) Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 10 p.m. ET (on ESPN). Below, we look at the Gonzaga vs. Saint Mary’s odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Gonzaga has won 17 in a row, last losing Dec. 4 to now-No. 25 Alabama 91-82 on a neutral floor in Seattle.

The Zags are 8-3-2 against the spread (ATS) since Jan. 1 and 14-10-2 ATS this season. The Bulldogs are a perfect 5-0 on the road. They’re led by C Drew Timme (18.1 points per game) and freshman phenom C Chet Holmgren (14.7 points and team-high 9.8 rebounds per game).

Gonzaga beat Saint Mary’s 74-58 Feb. 12, pushing as a 16-point home favorite. Saint Mary’s is 18-9-1 ATS and a perfect 15-0 straight up at home.

The Gaels are led by F Matthias Tass (12.4 points per game), who is joined by three teammates also averaging double figures in scoring.

PASS.

The -700 price for a Gonzaga win is unplayable, although extremely likely. At home, the Zags beat Saint Mary’s by 16 earlier in the season. Betting on a Gaels’ upset at +470 also isn’t a smart play.

Against the spread

LEAN to GONZAGA -10.5 (-120).

It’s not easy to consistently cover a 30-point spread, but Gonzaga has consistently covered spreads of 15 points or less. In the 15-points or less situation, the Bulldogs covered its last 3 (at San Francisco, at BYU and vs. BYU).

Saint Mary’s has been terrific ATS but lost by 16 in the push last time it played Gonzaga, which led by 13 at the half. Timme was 11-for-16 from the field for the Zags in that matchup.

The Bulldogs are a dominant side and have been reliable in conference play, going 8-3-2 ATS.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 144.5 (-108).

Despite the Zags’ high-pace offense, the Gaels held the Bulldogs to just 74 points in the first meeting. Saint Mary’s has been terrific defensively, ranking 11th in the nation in opponents’ points per game (59.5).

Offensively, the Gaels average just 69.7 points per game. So, as long as they limit the Bulldogs, similar to what they did last time, the Under should be the better play.

Both teams have also consistently hit the Under with Gonzaga 11-15 O/U and Saint Mary’s 13-14-1 O/U.

Saint Mary’s vs. San Diego State: Three things to know

Originally this game was supposed to be played at SMC in Moraga, but strict COVID-19 restrictions in the Bay Area forced this game elsewhere. The two schools agreed to meet halfway between their campuses at Cal State SLO in a strong mid-major battle.
San Diego State was dropped by another WCC team, BYU, in their most recent game on Dec. 18, 72-62. They’re 1-1 SU/ATS against WCC teams so far this season, beating Pepperdine on Dec. 6. The Over has cashed in three of the past four outings for the Aztecs.
Saint Mary’s won a defensive battle, 53-33, against Colorado State as six-point favorites. It was a rare Under result, as the Over was 4-0 in the previous four outings. The Gaels have also won eight straight since an opening game loss on a neutral site against Memphis back on Nov. 25.

Money line (ML)

SAN DIEGO STATE (-150) is actually a better play on the money line than against the spread. The Aztecs are going to be ornery after a 10-point loss last time out against BYU, knocking them from the Top 25 rankings. They’re worth the extra juice just playing straight up in what should be a tight defensive battle.

Against the spread (ATS)

Saint Mary’s +2.5 (-110) is the lean, if I were forced to pick a side and stick with it. But again, I prefer San Diego State on the money line instead. This is going to be a fun game, though, and we’ll see both of these sides with high seedings come NCAA Tournament time. PASS.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 126.5 (-115) is a good play, but don’t get carried away. The Over has connected in each of the past two for San Diego State, as their averaging a healthy 73.3 PPG.

But defensively, the Aztecs are allowing 59.5 PPG. St. Mary’s also plays a pretty solid brand of defense, allowing just 60.7 PPG to date. They’re good for 72.3 PPG, and they’re a pretty decent free-throw shooting team at 74.4 percent. However, the Gaels allowed just 33 points last time out.
