Notre Dame receives commitment from Youth Olympics gold medalist

Look out for this name in the future.

The interesting this about talented amateur hockey players is that they’re seemingly playing for a different team all the time. One of many example of that is [autotag]AJ Garcia[/autotag], who is fresh off winning a championship with the Chicago Mission and a gold medal with the U.S. at this year’s Youth Winter Olympics. Now, we know he’ll be heading to Notre Dame in the distant future:

Being that Garcia, a native of Romeoville, Illinois, only is 16, it will be a while before we see him in South Bend. Still, the fact that his next campaign will be with the U.S. National Team Development Program speaks volumes as to how much potential he has. Irish fans have reason to be excited about him.

Elsewhere in Irish hockey, the program has hired former Sacred Heart director of hockey operations [autotag]Jessica Thibault[/autotag] to the same role. The hire was announced by [autotag]Jeff Jackson[/autotag], who will retire as Irish coach after the upcoming season in favor of [autotag]Brock Sheahan[/autotag].

First Four: Sacred Heart Women’s Basketball makes history for school

The Sacred Heart University Pioneers women’s basketball team makes history.

The Sacred Heart University Pioneers women’s basketball team notched their first NCAA Tournament win at the Division I level, which is a first for either the men’s or women’s basketball programs. It was also the first March Madness win for a Northeast Conference women’s team.

They played against Southern University, one of two HBCUs in the 2023 March Madness Women’s D1 NCAA tournament, and defeated them 57-47. They are now the underdog of the West Regional as the No. 16 seed and play No. 1 seeded Stanford at 7:30 p.m. ET on March 17th airing live on ESPN2.

Senior guard Olivia Tucker led the Pioneers with 13 points and freshman guard Ny’Ceara Pryor had 10 assists, eight rebounds, and 11 points. Junior forward Kelsey Wood added 10 points.

“I am so proud of our team’s effort. It was a true battle tonight. I am so proud of how our team rallied to make history tonight,” said SHU’s 10th year head coach Jessica Mannetti.

“We just made history, and we are not done with this story,” said Ny’Ceara Pryor, the NEC Player, Rookie and Defensive Player of the Year.

Julius Chestnut, Tre Avery make Titans’ initial 53-man roster

The Titans keeping CB Tre Avery and RB Julius Chestnut were the biggest surprises on the 53-man roster.

The Tennessee Titans revealed their initial 53-man roster for the 2022 season and the two biggest surprises on it were no doubt running back Julius Chestnut and cornerback Tre Avery.

Both undrafted free agent signings of the Titans following the 2022 NFL draft, Avery (Rutgers) and Chestnut (Sacred Heart) faced uphill climbs in making the cut, as is usually the case with undrafted free agents.

However, both rose to the occasion and posted strong showings in training camp and the preseason. Chestnut in particular was the best back of the group that played during the exhibition slate.

Of course, just because they made the initial group doesn’t mean they will stick. Tennessee is bound to make more roster moves in the coming week-plus before the start of the season.

Chestnut is likely in more danger of being a casualty in that situation, as the Titans are carrying a total of five backs (four running backs, one fullback), which is a lot, especially when you have Derrick Henry dominating work.

If either player does get cut, chances are they’ll end up on Tennessee’s practice squad if they clear waivers.

Whatever the case may be, this is a big accomplishment for Chestnut and Avery, both of whom overcame going undrafted to earn their spots on an NFL roster.
