Good morning, Winners! Welcome back to the Morning Win. Thanks so much for rocking with us today. We appreciate your time.

Folks, it’s finally happening. The Sabrina Ionescu experience is here.

I know what some of you are probably saying. “Sykes, she’s an All-Star. What are you talking about?” And, look. I guess that’s totally fair.

But I remember when Ionescu was drafted. I remember the hype. Coming out of Oregon, she was Caitlin Clark before there was Caitlin Clark. She’d smashed record after record with the Ducks. She became the first player in NCAA history to amass 2,000 points, 1,000 assists and 1,000 rebounds. She’s also the NCAA’s all-time triple-double leader with 26. According to HerHoopStats, no Division I program besides Oregon and Iowa has more than 11 triple-doubles.

We expected more of that when she came to the WNBA. We hadn’t quite gotten it. That is, until now.

Ionescu isn’t grabbing triple-doubles, but she’s dominating the Aces the same way she used to dominate in college. So far, she’s averaging 24.5 points per game through these playoffs with incredible efficiency. She’s shooting 53 percent from the floor, 42 percent from deep and 93 percent from the free throw line.

She’s also the second player in league history to score at least 20 points and dish out five assists while shooting 50 percent from the floor in at least three straight games.

On a team with Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones, Ionescu has clearly been the Liberty’s best offensive player and a bellwether for success. In a series with Chelsea Gray, Kelsey Plum and Jackie Young on the other side, she’s been the best guard on the court. She dominated the Aces with 11 fourth-quarter points to put Game 2 away.

Things only get harder from here. Las Vegas’ back is against the wall. The series heads back west, and the reigning MVP of the league will surely do everything in her power to shift the series back to New York. It will be up to Ionescu and her team to put them away.

If Ionescu can keep her momentum going, it should be on to the WNBA Finals again for the Liberty.

The Astros are in trouble

The Houston Astros have been a fixture for the playoffs in Major League Baseball for nearly a decade.

The Stros have been to seven straight ALCS series, which is an American League record and something that only the Atlanta Braves (1991-99) have accomplished in MLB history.

Yet, all good things must someday come to an end. That end might be near for that Astros streak, with Houston in danger of losing to the Detroit Tigers in the Wild Card round. The Astros fell 3-1 to the Tigers in Game 1.

Framber Valdez had been at his sharpest in the second half of the season for Houston, but gave up a walk and three hits in the second inning to give the Tigers a three-run cushion that Detroit never let go of.

This continues a shaky postseason streak for Valdez, who didn’t fare much better on the mound in the 2023 playoffs through three appearances. The margin of error is so razor-thin in this short series. He may have just cost his team a shot at advancing.

It’s not all on him. The Stros’ bats could only muster up one run the entire game. But Detroit getting off to such a fast start certainly didn’t help things.

The Tigers will have to fight for survival again on Wednesday in Game 2. We’ll see how it shakes out.

Davante Adams, you are NOT a Chief

Mandatory Credit: Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Davante Adams will definitely be on the move soon. The Raiders receiver has officially requested a trade from Las Vegas and the team seems more than willing to oblige.

Yesterday, I said I thought the Chiefs were a good fit. Today, Christian D’Andrea explains why that’s actually a pretty silly idea.

“It would take a Godfather offer for Las Vegas to hand over a player who would drastically improve the odds of a Kansas City Super Bowl three-peat. But adding Adams would be a boon for Patrick Mahomes’ passing game — one that’s steadily dialed back its frequency of deep and intermediate throws since Tyreek Hill became a Miami Dolphin. The veteran wideout would be a focus-pulling presence capable of thriving near the sideline or in the middle of the field. He’d help Xavier Worthy fulfill his potential as a perpetual game-breaking threat.

The Chiefs are unlikely to give up what it would take to convince the Raiders to trade a star player to a team they hate. Kansas City also has minimal cap space to make this happen, particularly with Trey Smith and Nick Bolton headed toward free agency. But no one needs Adams more than the Chiefs need him, so the fit had to at least be addressed here even if there’s a one in 1,000 chance it actually happens.”

Basically, the Raiders are too petty and the Chiefs don’t have enough cap space actually to make this happen. It’s a nice idea, but it’s probably a pipe dream, Chiefs fans.

My bad. But you should still read Christian on the best trade fits for Adams and why the Cowboys and Browns shouldn’t really be considered, either.

Sabrina Ionescu credited Spike Lee’s mid-game high five for a Liberty playoff win

“I felt like New York was just injected into my veins.”

Sabrina Ionescu had an stellar night against the Atlanta Dream and credited Spike Lee for it.

Give kudos to the Dream. Atlanta played its heart out against one of the best teams in the league. But, a third-quarter surge proved too much for the team to overcome. Much of that enormous offensive burst was created by Jonquel Jones (20 points and 13 rebounds) and Sabrina Ionescu, who had a playoff career-high night (36 points and nine assists).

Ionescu just put her head down and went to work, wracking up 10 points in the 3rd quarter alone. But it might not all be because of Sabrina. There’s a mid-game high five from Spike Lee that possibly did some underrated heavy lifting to push the Liberty into a semifinal rematch with the Aces.

Here’s Ionescu explaining during a Liberty presser how that mid-game dap up changed the matchup:

“Spike Lee gave me a high five as I was going to take the ball out of bounds, and I felt, like, New York, was just, like, injected into my veins. At that moment, I was like, ‘We’re winning this…'”

Sabrina Ionescu somehow snagged her own rebound and made a layup from her knees

How?!?

During her team’s away game against the Seattle Storm on Friday night, New York Liberty superstar Sabrina Ionescu hit one of the most stunning baskets of the WNBA season so far.

As Ionescu was going in for a layup, she lost her footing and fell to the court to miss the attempt.

However, that didn’t stop her from snagging the rebound and managing to make the make-up attempt while she was still on the floor. Like… how?!?

Ionescu joked on social media that “if you can shoot, you can shoot.” As she’s one of the greatest scorers in the game, that holds very true with this amazing basket.

Sabrina Ionescu knocks down wild shot in Liberty win over Storm

Sabrina Ionescu keeps on doing unreal things on the floor as he made a shot while laying on the floor in the Liberty’s win in Seattle.

Just when you think Sabrina Ionescu has done it all on the floor, she manages to top herself yet again.

In the 98-85 win at Seattle where she finished with 25 points and eight rebounds, Ionescu went down to her knees for one of those boards and two of those points.

On a running lay-in attempt, Ionescu fell to the floor and as the ball came down, it somehow ended up in her hands. Amid some traffic in the lane, Ionescu didn’t have time to get up, so she put up a shot from her knees and it went in.

By now, it’s just another highlight in her illustrious career. Ionescu is coming off winning the gold medal in the Paris Olympics and she is leading the New York Liberty to the WNBA’s best record of 27-6. They are the favorites to win the championship, something that’s still not on Ionescu’s resume.

Yet.

Sabrina Ionescu hit the Olympic Turkish shooter celebration during a Liberty blowout win

Hitting this pose, while up 37, is diabolical, Sabrina. WE LOVE IT.

Sabrina Ionescu hit a fantastic Yusuf Dikec celebration during a matchup with the Sparks, and we love to see it.

The Turkish shooter’s Olympic reign continues and isn’t showing any signs of slowing. Yusuf’s iconic one-arm shooting stance appears to be the thing to do after you absolutely nail something, and Sabrina brought the fun to a Sparks game. (We had it had to be you, Los Angeles.)

After Ionescu drained her third 3-pointer of the game — extending the lead to a paltry 37 points — she caught the attention of Brenna Stewart to celebrate. Sabrina then dropped a filthy, winking Yusuf sharpshooter celly and immediately let off a diabolical laugh. Fantastic stuff.

Sabrina Ionescu earns first gold medal at 2024 Paris Olympics

Former Oregon Ducks star Sabrina Ionescu won her first gold medal with Team USA in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The Mother of Ducklings has officially added a gold medal to her trophy case.

Former Oregon Duck star Sabrina Ionescu accomplished one of the most prestigious feats in all of sports on Sunday morning, winning a gold medal with Team USA in a thrilling 67-66 win over France in the championship game.

This was Ionescu’s first gold medal in her Olympic debut, but the eight consecutive gold medal won the the Team USA women’s basketball team.

Ionescu had a somewhat limited role on the team, playing just an average of 13 minutes per game in the tournament. She scored 5.5 points per game, and added 3.3 assists per contest in the gold medal run as well.

The United States now leaves the 2024 Paris Olympics tied with the most gold medals among all countries with 40. China also had 40 gold medals. Meanwhile, Team USA dominated the overall medal count with 126 total, while China had 91.

Regardless of the numbers or the extensiveness of her role, Ionescu is coming back as a gold medalist, which is something she can hold onto forever.

Sabrina Ionescu’s 3-point crowd silencer against Belgium had her USA basketball teammates in awe

Sabrina Ionescu’s shot was so COLD that even her teammates were stunned.

Sabrina Ionescu casually tossing up a dagger 3-point shot as time expired was so on-brand.

In case you missed it, Team USA women’s basketball has looked pretty good in its opening slate of pool play games, including during a slugfest Thursday with Belgium. Breanna Stewart and A’ja Wilson seemingly steamrolled nearly everyone on the court as the U.S. kept the gas pedal to the floor to secure a huge win.

Late in the fourth quarter, the U.S. tried to run the clock out while Belgium attempted to close the gap a bit. However, the team was informed it had to shoot the ball. So, Sabrina casually heaved a 3-point shot and BANG. NOTHING BUT NYLON. SWISH. (You get it.) Ionescu immediately put up the “hush” sign, producing a glorious Olympic moment and one COLD photo.

As you might guess, her teammates loved every bit of the shot. The different angles of them realizing what she did are fantastic.

Why Caitlin Clark and Sabrina Ionescu are not in the WNBA’s All-Star 3-point contest

Here’s the reason why Caitlin Clark and Sabrina Ionescu won’t be in the WNBA’s All-Star 3-point contest.

Caitlin Clark and her fellow 3-point specialist, Sabrina Ionescu, are not participating in the WNBA’s 3-point contest during All-Star weekend. If you’re here, you’re probably wondering one thing: WHY NOT?!

The answer is very simple. They both declined. YEP. They both said no.

Per Doug Feinberg of the Associated Press, both athletes were invited but opted not to participate. Ionescu is on the U.S. women’s national team and is preparing for the Olympics. Feinberg did not list the reasoning regarding Caitlin, but it’s not inconceivable to assume that it’s likely for rest. She’s been playing basketball nearly nonstop since last year, and per her own admission, she needs “to not” pick up a ball during the Olympic break.

Something else to consider is that Caitlin wants WNBA All-Star weekend to be about every player there. As she previously mentioned, She doesn’t want the focus to be on just her or her fellow All-Star rookie, Angel Reese.

UPDATE: Caitlin Clark confirms that she is out of the contest so she can rest. “I’ve been playing basketball for a year straight,” she told media during AllStar weekend. “Like it’s not an easy thing to just show up to and shoot off of a rack.”

Sabrina Ionescu keeps on setting records in The Big Apple

Thirteen may be Sabrina Ionescu’s lucky number as that’s how many 30-point games in her career, setting a New York Liberty record.

It took her just four seasons to break this record and by the time she’s done, it may be a mark that’s never broken.

Former Duck and current WNBA superstar Sabrina Ionescu just set the New York Liberty franchise record with 13 games where she scored 30 or more points. Cappie Pondexter was the previous record holder.

In the 82-74 win over Orlando, Ionescu scored 30 points, grabbed six rebounds, and dished out six assists. New York is now 21-4 in what is its best season in franchise history.

It’s also been a career season for Ionescu as she leads the Liberty in scoring (19.8 ppg) and assists (6.1).

Her teammate, Brianna Stewart, has 10 games where she has scored 30 or more for the Liberty. It’ll be interesting to see who ultimately holds the record once everything is said and done.

Both Ionescu and Stewart and the entire WNBA will take a break as their best players will go to Paris and play for Team USA in the Olympics later this month.

Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu had a game-saving block party against the Sun

Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu joined the SWAT team.

Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu had a game-saving block party in a thriller against the Connecticut Sun, and it was totally awesome.

Late in the fourth quarter, with under two minutes to play, the New York Liberty were up 69-68 when Stewie unleashed not one but THREE huge blocks to stuff Connecticut. Also, with four seconds left, Sabrina Ionescu drove to the lane for the go-ahead basket. BUT IT GETS BETTER.

After a timeout, the Sun tried to get off a 3-point shot. However, Sabrina came up SUPER CLUTCH with a COLOSSAL block to stop a possible game-tying bucket by Ty Harris. HELLO, A LITERAL BLOCK PARTY.
