Bears sign OL Shon Coleman, waive P Ryan Winslow

The Bears have made a couple of roster moves with the start of OTAs, signing OL Shon Coleman and releasing P Ryan Winslow.

With the start of Organized Team Activities (OTAs), the Chicago Bears have made some roster moves to kick things off.

The Bears have signed offensive tackle Shon Coleman and waived punter Ryan Winslow in a corresponding roster move, the team announced on Tuesday.

Coleman, a former third-round pick in 2016, started every game at right tackle for the Cleveland Browns in 2017. He was traded to the San Francisco 49ers in 2018, although he didn’t played in a regular season game. Coleman missed the 2019 season due to injury and opted out in 2020 due to COVID-19 concerns.

Coleman was released by the Indianapolis Colts this month, which adds another former Colt to the Bears’ roster.

There’s been a focus on the offensive line this offseason for general manager Ryan Poles, including drafting four offensive linemen on Day 3 of the NFL draft. He hasn’t made any big splashes, rather, he continues to add depth.

It seems there won’t be a punter battle in training camp as seventh-round rookie Trenton Gill is now the only punter on the roster following Winslow’s release. Gill will step into the shoes of former Bears punter Pat O’Donnell, who signed with the Green Bay Packers in free agency.

Bears sign LS Beau Brinkley, P Ryan Winslow

The Bears made a couple of special teams moves signing LS Beau Brinkley and P Ryan Winslow to the roster.

The Chicago Bears made a couple of special teams moves signing punter Ryan Winslow and long snapper Beau Brinkley to the active roster, the team announced Wednesday.

Winslow was an undrafted free agent by the Bears in 2018, and he was part of final roster cuts later that training camp. Since then, Winslow has been quite the journeyman. He’s spent time with seven different teams since 2019, including the Arizona Cardinals (three times), Green Bay Packers, Carolina Panthers, Washington Commanders and San Francisco 49ers. Winslow spent most of his NFL career on the practice squad.

Brinkley has a little more NFL experience, including a nine-year stint with the Tennessee Titans from 2012-2020. He joined the Titans as an undrafted free agent and earned two contract extensions with the team. Since then, he’s had practice squad stints with the Detroit Lions, Cardinals and Los Angeles Chargers.

Punter Pat O’Donnell and long snapper Patrick Scales, who have both been with the team for the last few years, are slated to hit the free-agent market next month. There was always a possibility that both wouldn’t return in 2022, and that looks like it very well might be the case.

Winslow and Brinkley join kicker Cairo Santos as the special teams players currently under contract ahead of free agency.

Cardinals sign P Ryan Winslow, TE David Wells to practice squad

If Andy Lee is not activated from the COVID list by Saturday, Winslow will punt and serve as holder on kicks against the Colts.

The Arizona Cardinals might need a punter this Saturday against the Indianapolis Colts, as Andy Lee was placed on the COVID list Wednesday. They addressed that by signing punter Ryan Winslow to the practice squad.

Winslow punted for the Cardinals for two games in 2019 when Lee was injured.

He spent time with the Cardinals in 2019, was with the team the entire 2020 offseason and spent part of the 2021 preseason with the team as well.

He averaged 48.5 yards on six punts for the Cardinals.

The familiarity will be helpful in the kicking game as well, as he has practiced and served as the holder for extra points and field goals.

They also re-signed tight end David Wells to the practice squad.

He was on the practice squad earlier this season, was elevated to the active roster, played one snap, got hurt and landed on injured reserve. He was designated to return last week and activated on Monday before he was released. He cleared waivers and now returns to the practice squad.

Panthers place RG John Miller on IR, waive P Ryan Winslow

The Panthers made a handful of roster moves on Tuesday, including the placement of starting RG John Miller on the IR.

Carolina Panthers starting right guard John Miller has had a bumpy ride here in 2021. And although he’s been repeatedly heralded as one, tough customer by head coach Matt Rhule, the 6-foot-3, 315-pounder won’t find a way to grind through this one.

Miller exited Sunday’s loss to the New York Giants after sustaining what Rhule described on Monday as a “pretty bad ankle sprain.” That sprain has now been determined to be serious enough for an injured reserve stint.

The team announced the placement of Miller on the IR Tuesday. He will miss, at least, the next three games.

This latest absence will force the Panthers to, once again, rework their offensive line. If starting left guard Pat Elflein—who has yet to be activated after wrapping up his stay on IR—is still not good to go himself, that’ll complicate the matter even more for an already struggling unit.

Rookie Brady Christensen, Michael Jordan, Dennis Daley and/or Trent Scott will be the team’s options in filling one or perhaps both of those guard positions.

The Panthers, additionally, have waived punter Ryan Winslow. The 27-year-old played in the last two games for Carolina, totaling 13 punts for an average of 38.6 yards per attempt.

As a result, they’ve signed Lachlan Edwards—now the current favorite to take over punting duties starting in Week 8—to the practice squad. Kicker Dominik Eberle was released to make room for Edwards.

Panthers sign P Ryan Winslow to active roster, place WR Brandon Zylstra on IR

The Panthers called a guy up, put a guy down and brought another guy back in a trio of roster moves on Tuesday.

The Carolina Panthers did their due diligence yesterday, having worked out punter Drue Chrisman alongside long snapper Turner Bernard. But, it seems they’re just fine with the leg they have there now.

On Tuesday, the team announced the signing of Ryan Winslow to the active roster. Winslow was an addition to the practice squad last week following the back injury to Joseph Charlton.

In his call-up in Week 6 against the Minnesota Vikings, the 27-year-old booted six punts for an average of 40.7 yards per attempt. Three of those six were pinned inside the Minnesota 20-yard line.

Winslow will be taking the roster spot of wideout Brandon Zylstra, who has been placed on the injured reserve after sustaining a hamstring injury in the loss. Despite his return to the game following the issue, the fourth-year receiver will sit the next few weeks out.

Over the team’s six games, Zylstra has caught eight passes on eight targets for 139 yards and a touchdown.

Additionally, in a second corresponding move, the Panthers have brought back rusher Reggie Bonnafon to take Winslow’s spot on the practice squad. Bonnafon has played in 18 career games, all for Carolina, over his three-year career.

Panthers work out P Drue Chrisman, LS Turner Bernard

The Panthers have already had a dizzying time trying to pin down a kicker. Are they about to go through another ride in trying to find a punter?

The Carolina Panthers just recently hopped off a carousel of kickers, having seemingly settled in with Zane Gonzalez after going through a dizzying ride at the position. But have they tried the Tilt-A-Whirl?

A new slice of excitement, or despair, may now be awaiting them with the other spot that requires a leg. As noted by the league on Monday, the Panthers have worked out punter Drue Chrisman.

Chrisman was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Cincinnati Bengals back in May. The Ohio State University product, who averaged 44.6 yards per punt on his 73 collegiate tries, has experienced a bit of back-and-forth with the hometown team, which just ended with his release on Oct. 12.

This news comes, of course, less than a week after the Panthers placed Joseph Charlton on the injured reserve. The newly-signed Ryan Winslow, who pinned three of his six punts inside the 20-yard line, took over the duties on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings.

Carolina, as also indicated, worked out long snapper Turner Bernard as well. Bernard, another undrafted free agent, was most recently with Minnesota.

Panthers place P Joseph Charlton on injured reserve

The Panthers have placed P Joseph Charlton, who has averaged a league-low 35.8 net yards per punt, on the injured reserve.

In a game-altering blunder, Carolina Panthers punter Joseph Charlton had a late fourth-quarter attempt blocked by the Philadelphia Eagles this past Sunday. Now, he’ll have to sit with that sour taste in his mouth for at least the next three weeks.

Charlton has tried his last punt for a while, as the Panthers have placed the boot on the injured reserve. The 24-year-old had been dealing with a back injury entering the week.

The 2021 sophomore season has not been that kind to the 6-foot-5 punter in terms of production either. Charlton has netted just 35.8 yards per attempt this year, the lowest average amongst all punters.

As a result, the team has signed another punter, Ryan Winslow, to the practice squad. Winslow, who also stands at 6-foot-5 (the Panthers may have a type), has racked up some mileage over his three-year professional career, with stints in Chicago, Arizona, Green Bay and a stop in the Alliance of America Football.

Safety Kenny Robinson, additionally, was signed up to the active roster to fill Charlton’s spot.

Cardinals release one punter to bring back another

They claimed Ryan Winslow, who was on their roster in 2019, after he was released by the Packers. They cut Tyler Newsome as a result.

The Arizona Cardinals announced a pair of roster moves on Tuesday, both dealing with punters. They were awarded a waiver claim on punter Ryan Winslow, who was cut by the Green Bay Packers.

To make room for Winslow, they released Tyler Newsome, who had impressed in the offseason and training camp.

Winslow used to play for the Cardinals. He played two games for Arizona back in 2019 when Andy Lee was injured.

He averaged 44.2 yards on his six punts for the Cardinals. Two were downed inside the 20.

Winslow will get some work in the Cardinals’ two remaining preseason games and, while he likely will not make the team, if he is brought back to the practice squad, they will have a punter they know and trust if they need him.

And if he doesn’t land with another team during the season, he potentially could be the Cardinals’ punter in 2022 if Andy Lee decides to retire.

Cardinals release WR Hakeem Butler, others on eve of final cuts

Last year’s fourth-round pick is let go even before the final day to make roster moves.

The Arizona Cardinals entered the day with 74 players on their roster and have until Saturday afternoon to get get it down to 53. They announced five moves on Friday to get the roster down to 69 players.

They released four players outright, including last year’s fourth-round pick, receiver Hakeem Butler.

Getting released along with Butler were offensive lineman Sam Jones, defensive lineman Miles Brown and punter Ryan Winslow.

Offensive lineman Brett Toth was waived/injured. He has an issue with a hamstring. If he clears waivers, he will revert to injured reserve.

Butler is the most prominent player to get cut. Brown was the only undrafted rookie to make the team last season, but when the Cardinals signed Jordan Phillips and drafted Leki Fotu and Rashard Lawrence, it was going to be hard for him to make the team.

Jones and Winslow never really had a shot at the roster.

That leaves 16 cuts the Cardinals will need to make by Saturday at 1 p.m. Arizona time.

After final cuts are made, they will be able to assemble a 16-player practice squad.
