NFL WR Ryan Switzer seeks prayers for COVID-19 positive infant son

The infant son of NFL WR Ryan Switzer is hospitalized and battling COVID-19

Current Cleveland Brown and former Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboy WR Ryan Switzer reached out to the Twitterverse seeking prayers for his 9-month-old son, who is in the hospital after being diagnosed as positive for COVID-19.

Switzer spent last season on the Browns’ practice squad.

Best wishes to Switzer, his family, and especially his baby boy for a swift and complete recovery.

This COVID-19 pandemic is terrifying and this is just another example of how scary it remains.

Browns sign WR/RS Ryan Switzer to reserve/futures contract

Switzer offers value as a return specialist candidate

The Browns added one more practice squad player to the team’s reserve/futures list over the weekend. Cleveland signed wide receiver and return specialist Ryan Switzer to a reserve/futures contract.

Switzer was on and off the Browns practice squad over the 2020 season after spending his first three NFL seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys. He was a 4th-round pick by Dallas in the 2017 NFL draft out of North Carolina and quickly won the Cowboys return man position. He was also the Steelers’ primary return man in 2018.

As a receiver, Switzer primarily operates out of the slot. He was on the Browns’ practice squad reserve/COVID-19 list and also had time on the practice squad injury list during his first year in Cleveland. His reserve/futures contract is for one year, tying Switzer to the Browns through the offseason until the roster limit expands to 90 in March.

Browns roster moves: WR Taywan Taylor to I.R.

The team also made a change at the bottom of the practice squad

The Browns were busy making roster moves on Tuesday. In addition to placing starting RG Wyatt Teller on the reserve/COVID-19 list and activating Porter Gustin off the same list, the team placed reserve wideout Taywan Taylor on injured reserve.

Taylor injured his neck in a practice session and did not play in Week 13. Coach Kevin Stefanski indicated on Monday that the team was in need of further evaluation, and that resulted in Taylor going on I.R.

Moving Taylor to I.R. opens a space for Marvin Hall, who was claimed off waivers from the Detroit Lions. Hall remains on the exempt list while he clears COVID-19 protocols.

The team also shuffled the practice squad. Cleveland activated WR Ryan Switzer from the practice squad/injured list and released DE Jamal Davis.

Browns add 2 to practice squad, protect 4 more for Week 10

CB Stephen Denmark and OC Javon Patterson both worked out for the Browns over the bye weekend

The Browns were busy on Tuesday making changes and designations to the team’s practice squad. Two new players were signed to the squad, and the Browns also revealed the four members of the 14-man squad who are protected for Week 10.

The new additions are CB Stephen Denmark and OL Javon Patterson. Both worked out for the team over the bye weekend and passed COVID-19 protocols to join the team. Denmark brings a size component to the secondary, while Patterson effectively replaces active-roster backup Evan Brown, who was waived by the Browns.

To create one of the needed spots on the practice squad, WR Ryan Switzer was placed on the injured/practice squad list. He no longer counts against the Browns total roster tally. The Browns also terminated the contract of DB Prince Smith.

In addition to the additions, the team protected four players:

  • QB Kyle Lauletta
  • DE Cameron Malveaux
  • PK Matt McCrane
  • OT Alex Taylor

Mike Priefer has many options to replace JoJo Natson as the Browns return specialist

Who will take over for JoJo Natson as the Browns return specialist?

Could this be the week Donovan Peoples-Jones makes his NFL debut? The sixth-round rookie is one of several options for Browns special teams coordinator Mike Priefer to replace injured return specialist JoJo Natson.

Natson was placed on I.R. this week after tearing an ACL in Sunday’s win over Washington.

Peoples-Jones, a wide receiver from Michigan with electrifying athleticism, was the first name mentioned by Priefer when listing his options for Week 4 during his press conference this week. It’s a lengthy list that includes a newcomer to the team’s practice squad, Ryan Switzer.

“We have worked guys,” Priefer said via Zoom. “We’ve worked Donovan Peoples-Jones and we have worked Dontrell (Hilliard – signed to the active roster from the practice squad this week) and D’Ernest (Johnson). Ryan (Switzer) will certainly be in play either this week or next week. It just depends on how quickly we get him ready if we need him.”

During training camp, Natson and Peoples-Jones were the primary return men competing for the gig. Hilliard and Johnson both gained some experience with the Browns in years past as returners, too. Switzer was the all-rookie return specialist in 2017 in Dallas and thrived again in Pittsburgh in 2018.

Priefer understands it’s a tough choice.

“We have some candidates,” Priefer continued. “They are all different type returners than JoJo so we have to adjust a little bit of what we do, but that is why we are paid as coaches and players, and we have to go out and do our job.”

5 reasons the Browns will beat the Cowboys in Week 4

Browns sign LB Montrel Meander, WR Ryan Switzer to the practice squad

Switzer brings another option as a return specialist

Montrel Meander is back with the Browns. He never really left even though the team waived the linebacker on Monday.

After clearing waivers, Meander quickly re-signed with the Browns on the team’s practice squad. He spent the first week of the season there before being elevated in the Week 2 game against the Bengals.

He’s joined on the practice squad by a newcomer, though a familiar one for many fans. Wide receiver Ryan Switzer signed with Cleveland’s practice squad on Thursday. Switzer met with the team earlier in the week and cleared COVID-19 protocols to sign with the Browns.

Switzer played 41 games in his first three NFL seasons, 2017 with Dallas (this week’s opponent) and 2018-2019 with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He is a slot receiver but saw more action as a return specialist. He made the NFL’s all-rookie team as a return man for the Cowboys in 2017 and finished in the top eight in total return yards in each of his first two seasons.

Cleveland lost return specialist JoJo Natson to I.R. with a knee injury in Week 3.

Browns hold visit with free agent WR Ryan Switzer

Switzer was as slot receiver and return specialist for the Steelers the last two years

Scrolling through the NFL’s transaction wire for Tuesday produced an eyebrow raise. The Cleveland Browns appeared almost at the bottom with a free agent visit.

Buried below the practice squad protection designations, the reserve list additions and the officially reported tryouts sat this little nugget:

Ryan Switzer was in Berea for a visit. A fourth-round pick out of North Carolina by the Dallas Cowboys in 2017, Switzer is best-known for his work with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2018-2019. He caught 44 passes in those two seasons as well as serving as Pittsburgh’s primary return specialist.

Switzer is a quicker-than-fast slot receiver who could fill in the JoJo Natson role as offensive weapon and return man. Natson was placed on I.R. with a knee injury this week.

Report: WR Ryan Switzer won’t be on Steelers practice squad

Ryan Switzer’s time in Pittsburgh is likely over.

[jwplayer omiGPolx-ThvAeFxT]

In just a few hours we should know who the Pittsburgh Steelers will have on their 16-man practice squad for the upcoming season. But according to ESPN NFL reporter Brooke Pryor, wide receiver Ryan Switzer won’t be a part of it.

There are a couple of ways to read this but it sounds to me like the Steelers are simply moving on from Switzer. It could mean Switzer isn’t planning to sign with the Steelers PS because he is holding out for a spot where he’s going to have a better chance to play.

It might be a bit of both.

Pittsburgh not bringing Switzer back into the fold does tell us one thing. Despite the amount of pull quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has with this roster, he couldn’t save Switzer. I know a lot of fans want to believe that Roethlisberger dictates who stays and who goes on offense but the release of Switzer is proof this probably isn’t the case.

The Steelers chose to only keep five wide receivers on the 53-man roster so look for them to bring back one or two of the talented young guys they had in training camp.
