Titans’ Ryan Stonehouse vying for two more NFL records

Ryan Stonehouse is vying for multiple NFL records in the Titans’ Week 18 game against the Jaguars.

The Tennessee Titans hit a grand slam when they signed punter Ryan Stonehouse as an undrafted free agent our of Colorado State last spring.

Remarkably, there were five punters drafted last April but he was not one of them despite being arguably the best collegiate punter in America. This type of league-wide ignorance resulted in a steal for the Titans as they seemingly have a generational punter on their hands.

Tennessee’s rookie is on pace to break the single-season record that Sammy Baugh has held since 1940 for the highest gross average yards per punt over an entire NFL campaign.

Stonehouse is averaging a whopping 53.02 yards per punt this season, nearly two whole yards more than Baugh’s record-setting average of 51.40 yards.

On top of this historic gross average, Stonehouse (44.02) is also well on pace to break Rigoberto Sanchez’s (42.64) rookie record for the highest net average yards per punt.

He needs four 60-plus-yard punts to break the single-season rookie record for the most in that category. That milestone is probably unlikely to be topped, but at worst, Stonehouse will finish his rookie campaign with the second-most 60-yard bombs in NFL history.

Needless to say, the Titans’ impressive punting legacy is in good shape for the foreseeable future.

Titans’ Ryan Stonehouse on verge of breaking 82-year-old record

Titans rookie punter Ryan Stonehouse is on the verge of making NFL history.

The Tennessee Titans took a big risk in moving on from franchise great Brett Kern in favor of rookie Ryan Stonehouse, but the decision has certainly paid off.

Stonehouse has been sensational in his first season. The rookie has displayed his monster leg time and time again, as he routinely blasts punts 50-plus yards, while also sprinkling in 60- and 70-yard attempts.

Going into Week 18, Stonehouse leads the NFL with a punt average of 53.0, but that mark is also the highest in the history of the NFL. The record, set by Hall of Famer and Washington punter Sammy Baugh in 1940, is 51.4.

That’s right, Stonehouse just casually strolled into the NFL and is about to crush an 82-year-old record.

As great as Stonehouse has been, there’s still room for improvement for the rookie punter, as evidenced by his net average yards per punt, which sits at 44.0 and ranks third in the NFL.

His biggest goal this offseason will be getting better at angling punts and pinning opponents deep. If he can get that down, Stonehouse would be as scary as a punter could possibly be.

While the Titans’ new punter smashes this record, their old one is doing just fine for himself. Kern signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in December and will have a good chance to win his first Super Bowl.

3 Titans named to Pro Bowl, 4 others chosen as alternates

Three Titans will take part in the 2023 Pro Bowl Games, and four others have been chosen as alternates.

The Tennessee Titans will have at least three of their players representing them at the 2023 Pro Bowl Games, with four others set to serve as alternates.

The three Titans making the cut after voting by fans, players and coaches are running back Derrick Henry, defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons and long snapper Morgan Cox.

For Henry, it’s the third Pro Bowl nod of his career, while Cox is making his fifth appearance. Simmons gets his second career nod, but it’s the first in which he was directly voted in, as he was a replacement last year.

The alternates from the Titans are center Ben Jones, punter Ryan Stonehouse, safety Kevin Byard and linebacker Dylan Cole, who was voted in for special teams.

Stonehouse, who is on pace to smash the single-season record for punt yards average, was the leading vote-getter at his position in the AFC in the fan vote, but apparently he didn’t do so well with players and coaches.

Another glaring snub (and for the second year in a row) is defensive lineman Denico Autry, who was in the midst of a career year before missing the past four games due to a knee injury.

He was second on the team with nine sacks last season, tying his career-high, and he has followed that up with seven sacks in 2022, which is second on the team despite missing the aforementioned games.

The NFL has made significant changes to the Pro Bowl this year. They are as follows, per NFL.com:

Taking place in Las Vegas in 2023, The Pro Bowl Games presented by Verizon will be a week-long celebration of player skills featuring an exciting new format that spotlights Flag football. The multi-day AFC vs NFC competition will culminate in an action-packed flag game featuring Pro Bowl players at Allegiant Stadium, and will air on ESPN and ABC on Sunday, Feb. 5, 2023.

Throughout the week, The Pro Bowl Games will also integrate new challenges where players showcase their football and non-football skills in unique competitions. The revamped programming allows the top stars show off their skills and celebrate their accomplishments in a fun, memorable way, surrounded by their families and fans.

2 Titans finish tops at their position in fan voting for Pro Bowl

Henry and Stonehouse led their positions in the AFC in the fan vote, but the votes of players and coaches are still left to be counted.

With the NFL season winding down, it’s only a matter of time before we start to hear more about end-of-year awards and accolades.

The Pro Bowl in particular is popular amongst fans because it’s one of the few times when they’re allowed to make their voices heard. However, when it came to the actual play on the field, the game left a lot to be desired.

This led to a public outcry for the league to make changes to the event, and the NFL listened.

This season, the Pro Bowl is shifting to a combination of flag football and competitive activities that will allow the selected players to have fun and give maximum effort without the fear of taking unnecessary hits.

Fans all across the globe have been voting for who they believe deserves to participate in the first-ever Pro Bowl Games. On Monday, the league officially released the leading vote-getters at each position.

The Titans have two players atop their respective positions: running back Derrick Henry and punter Ryan Stonehouse.

Henry is the obvious choice. His resume and consistent production throughout the season speaks for itself.

Stonehouse, on the other hand, is a bit of a surprise considering he’s a rookie, but there’s no denying that he deserves the nod. The Colorado product is well on his way to breaking Sammy Baugh’s single-season record for the highest punting average.

Stonehouse is currently averaging a whopping 53.6 yards per punt this season — 2.2 yards more than Baugh’s record and 1.8 yards more than Chiefs punter Tommy Townsend, who is also on pace to break Baugh’s record this year.

Henry and Stonehouse aren’t done just yet, though. Fan vote counts for just one-third of the total vote, with players and coaches counting for one-third each, also.

The official AFC and NFC rosters will be announced on Wednesday, Dec. 21, at 8 p.m. EDT on NFL Network.

Pair of Titans lead AFC in Pro Bowl voting at their positions

Electric Titans P Ryan Stonehouse is tops among AFC punters in Pro Bowl voting.

Voting for the 2023 Pro Bowl has already begun, and some Tennessee Titans players are at the top of their respective positions.

According to Jim Wyatt of Titans Online, running back Derrick Henry is second overall in the voting, but first among backs in the AFC. Henry currently ranks third in rushing yards.

Rookie punter Ryan Stonehouse, who’s off to a sensational start to his career and leads the NFL in gross average punt yards (53.5) by nearly three yards, ranks fourth overall but first in the conference.

The only other Titans who are in the top 10 at their respective positions are defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons, who ranks seventh, and safety Kevin Byard, who ranks 10th.

The biggest surprise is Stonehouse, but not because he doesn’t deserve it. The fact that a Titans punter — of all positions — is making enough noise to garner any kind of recognition nationally is stunning to say the least.

There are at least two more Titans defenders who deserve to make the cut: defensive lineman Denico Autry and linebacker David Long.

Unhappy where Simmons and Byard rank? Think Autry, Long, and/or another Titans player should be in the mix?

Well, you can make your voice heard by voting at the link in the tweet above.

Logan Cooke deserves Pro Bowl spot, says Jaguars special teams coordinator

Should Logan Cooke be a Pro Bowler?

The Jacksonville Jaguars appear unlikely to send any player to the Pro Bowl at the end of the 2022 season, but special teams coordinator Heath Farwell thinks that’d be a disservice to punter Logan Cooke.

“We’re able to watch a very, very talented punter and Pro Bowl talent, and hopefully this is his year,” Farwell said of Cooke in a Thursday press conference. “If it’s not, he deserves it. He’s a special player we’re lucky to have. I was fortunate to have him here, the Jacksonville Jaguars drafted him, and I just walk into a spectacular player.”

Cooke’s abilities were on full display during the 28-27 win over the Baltimore Ravens. After 70- and 68-yard punts both trickled into the end zone after they couldn’t quite be saved by the coverage unit, Daniel Thomas managed to track down another one that was downed at the two-yard line and counted as a 68-yarder.

“I see him do it every day,” Farwell said. “He’s super talented, he works at it every day. One is spectacular, let alone to have three of them, it’s pretty special. It’s something he works at all the time, and then to have [Thomas] go down there on that one at the two just made it even better.”

Through the first 12 weeks of the season, the only punter in the NFL (with at least 10 punts) who has recorded more yards per punt than Cooke’s 51.2-yard average is the Tennessee Titans’ Ryan Stonehouse with 53.1 yards. In the first update of Pro Bowl voting, Stonehouse was the leading vote getter among AFC punters.

Cooke, 27, was a seventh-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft and signed a four-year, $12 million contract extension with the Jaguars in March 2021.

Ryan Stonehouse named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week

Ryan Stonehouse has recorded his second award of the 2022 campaign.

Tennessee Titans punter Ryan Stonehouse is taking home his second award of the 2022 campaign. Stonehouse has been named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week for his Week 10 showing against the Denver Broncos.

In the game, Stonehouse attempted eight punts and ripped off 54 yards per tote while also dropping three inside the 10 and posting a long of 74.

Through nine games, Stonehouse leads the NFL in gross average punt yards (53.2) and is third in net average punt yards (45.3). His 20 punts landing inside the 20 ranks tied for fourth.

This is the second honor the rookie has received during his special rookie season, as he was also named AFC Special Teams Player of the Month for October.

The undrafted free agent out of Colorado State had a lot of pressure on his shoulders going into this season, as he was replacing one of the franchise’s greats, Brett Kern.

However, Stonehouse has answered the bell, and then some.

Titans great Brett Kern is loving this Ryan Stonehouse punt

Titans great Brett Kern was loving Ryan Stonehouse’s punt in the second quarter against the Chiefs.

Tennessee Titans punter Ryan Stonehouse has been a weapon in and of himself during his rookie campaign, something he showed once again during the Week 9 game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

After a failed drive in the second quarter, Stonehouse came on to punt from the Titans’ 40-yard line and promptly booted the ball 57 yards, three yards higher than his league-best 54.0 average.

We know Stonehouse has a big leg, but this punt was particularly impressive because Stonehouse dropped it on the one and gave Tennessee’s punt unit time to down it at the one-yard line.

After the play, Titans great Brett Kern, who was beat out by Stonehouse for the starting job in training camp, gave his full approval of the play.

Before final cuts went down, Kern knew what he was up against, and now we’re all seeing it first hand.

“I knew it was different when I first saw [Stonehouse] punt a ball,” Kern said back in August. “I knew that [the competition] was going to be a grind. I told him, I’ve been in the league a long time and I’ve seen about three or four people in my entire life hit a ball like he does.”

A pair of Tennessee Titans players have been recognized for their outstanding work during the month of October, with running back Derrick Henry and punter Ryan Stonehouse winning Player of the Month awards.

Henry was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Month, while Stonehouse was chosen as the AFC Special Teams Player of the Month.

In four games in October, Henry rushed for 563 yards and five touchdowns, including a Week 8 performance against the Houston Texans that saw him total 219 yards and two scores, earning him AFC Offensive Player of the Week honors.

The King currently ranks third in rushing yards in the NFL with 755, falling behind the New York Giants’ Saquon Barkley (779) and the Cleveland Browns’ Nick Chubb (841).

Stonehouse, who currently leads the NFL in punt average (54.0), averaged 51.7 yards per punt last month, with a long of 66. The rookie has been outstanding after winning the job over franchise great, Brett Kern.

Titans injury updates after Week 7: Ryan Tannehill, Jeffery Simmons, Ryan Stonehouse

Titans QB Ryan Tannehill was in a walking boot following the Week 7 win over the Colts.

The Tennessee Titans saw a handful of player suffer injuries during the 19-10 Week 7 win over the Indianapolis Colts at Nissan Stadium in Nashville on Sunday afternoon.

The list of injured players includes quarterback Ryan Tannehill (ankle), defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons (ankle), center Ben Jones (leg), and punter Ryan Stonehouse (knee).

While we didn’t receive any semblance of an update on Jones following the game, Tannehill and Simmons both talked about their respective injuries afterwards, and Tannehill was spotted in a walking boot.

Also, Stonehouse was spotted with an ice pack on his knee in the locker room, so it isn’t clear when or how he sustained his injury.

Here’s a look at what Simmons and Tannehill had to say about their ankle injuries after the culmination of Sunday’s game.
