UFC Fight Night 192 results: Anthony Smith drops, submits Ryan Spann in wild main event

Anthony Smith put on another stellar performance to finish Ryan Spann in the UFC Fight Night 192 main event.

[autotag]Anthony Smith[/autotag] put on another stellar performance to finish [autotag]Ryan Spann[/autotag] in the UFC Fight Night 192 main event.

Smith’s (36-16 MMA, 11-6 UFC) striking and grappling were both a level above Spann (19-7 MMA, 5-2 UFC) in the key matchup. He rocked his opponent with the hands multiple times before locking in a rear-naked choke to force the submission at the 3:47 mark of Round 1.

The light heavyweight bout was the UFC Fight Night 192 main event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. It streamed on ESPN+.

Both men came out aggressive to start the fight. Smith went to the leg kicks that were successful in his previous outing against Jimmy Crute, and Spann looked to counter with heavy blows. They got into some wild exchanges, and in the midst of the chaos Smith clipped and dropped Spann. He jumped on top and looked to finish the fight, but Spann stayed calm and avoided the follow ups. They reversed positions on the ground, and Smith searched for an armbar, but Spann spun free.

Once they got back to the feet, though, the momentum shifted back to Smith. His left hook was money over and over, and he clipped Spann multiple times and put him on wobbly legs. Spann went into survival mode as he shot for takedowns, but that allowed Smith to take his back and flatten him out on the canvas. Smith snuck the forearm under the throat and forced the tap out with a rear-naked choke.

After the submission, Smith got heated and started yelling in Spann’s face. They had to be separated as security filled the cage, but eventually cooler heads prevailed and they shook hands.

After the fight, Smith reiterated his pre-fight comments of wanting a rematch with Aleksander Rakic.

“I want Aleksander Rakic,” Smith said in his post-fight interview with Michael Bisping. “He’s just sitting around. He’s not getting the title. Either I get that fight or I’m going to skip him.”

Rakic quickly responded to the callout, and said he would be more than happy to run it back in December (via Twitter):

“Merry Christmas to me,” Smith said.

UFC Fight Night 192: Anthony Smith vs. Ryan Spann odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 192 odds and lines between Anthony Smith vs. Ryan Spann, with MMA picks, tips and predictions.

In a light heavyweight bout in the main event, Anthony Smith faces Ryan Spann at the UFC Fight Night 192 – also known as UFC Vegas 37 – at the UFC’s APEX Facility. Below, we analyze the UFC Fight Night 192: Smith vs. Spann odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

The entire card can be viewed on ESPN+ with the prelims beginning at 4 p.m. ET and the main card at 7 p.m. ET.

Ever since a loss for the title at UFC 235 to Jon “Bones” Jones, Smith has been on a mission to get back on top. However, he suffered a KO/TKO to Glover Teixeira May 13, 2020, and a unanimous-decision to Aleksandar Rakic Aug. 29, 2020, to knock him off the rails.

Smith bounced back with a pair of first-round wins via submission against Devin Clark Nov. 28, and TKO – Doctor’s Stoppage April 24, at UFC 261 against Jimmy Crute.

Spann holds a three-inch reach advantage over Smith, and he’ll look to use that advantage to keep his counterpart at bay. Spann also holds a 3.55-to-3.00 significant strikes landed per minute lead.

UFC Fight Night 192 Smith vs. Spann: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Records: Smith (35-16-0) | Spann (19-6-0)

Fight result (2-way line or money line)

SPANN (+130) is the better value play here. Win or lose, it’s always when Spann is fighting. He dropped Misha Cirkunov last time out in the first round March 13, but he was knocked out in the first round by Johnny Walker Sept. 19, 2020. Before that, Spann was on a 4-0 run to kick off his UFC career. Look for him to get the kill shot in this one at some point.

Over/Under (O/U)

SPANN BY TKO/KO (+370) provides an opportunity to more than triple up, and is worth a roll of the dice if you like the underdog to pull off the victory.

In addition, UNDER 2.5 ROUNDS (-150) is certainly worth a look. Each of Spann’s past two outings have ended in Round 1, so he doesn’t like to waste time. Each of Smith’s past two bouts have ended in Round 1, too.

UFC Fight Night 192 faceoff video: Ryan Spann won’t look at Anthony Smith

UFC Fight Night 192 headliners Anthony Smith and Ryan Spann had their sole staredown before sharing the octagon on Saturday.

LAS VEGAS – Light heavyweight contenders [autotag]Anthony Smith[/autotag] and [autotag]Ryan Spann[/autotag] got a final good look at one another on Friday ahead of UFC Fight Night 192.

After both men successfully made weight, Smith (34-16 MMA, 10-6 UFC) and Spann (19-6 MMA, 5-1 UFC) engaged in one last faceoff before stepping into the octagon with one another. It was a unique faceoff, as Spann refused to look at Smith once they came face-to-face.

UFC Fight Night 192 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The entire card streams on ESPN+.

Watch the video above to see the first and final staredown between Smith and Spann ahead of fight night.

It’s an important bout for both men. Smith will attempt to push his winning streak to three fights as he pursues his second UFC title shot. Spann, meanwhile, looks to secure a signature win in the light heavyweight division in his first headlining opportunity.

UFC Fight Night 192 video: Anthony Smith, Ryan Spann make weight for main event

The UFC Fight Night 192 main event between Anthony Smith and Ryan Spann is official.

LAS VEGAS – The UFC’s second main event of September between [autotag]Anthony Smith[/autotag] and [autotag]Ryan Spann[/autotag] is locked in.

At Friday’s official UFC Fight Night 192 weigh-ins, Smith (34-16 MMA, 10-6 UFC) and Spann (19-6 MMA, 5-1 UFC) had no issues on the scale as they successfully hit the light heavyweight limit for their headlining matchup.

Spann was first and tipped the scale roughly 44 minutes into the two-hour weigh-in window at 206 pounds. Smith, meanwhile, came in late with just five minutes remaining in the window registering at 205.5 pounds.

‘Very, very happy’ Ryan Spann sets the record straight on perceived ‘anger’ ahead of UFC Fight Night 192

Despite Anthony Smith’s perception, Ryan Spann explains how his passion is not the same as anger.

LAS VEGAS – Contrary to the belief of his UFC Fight Night 192 opponent, [autotag]Ryan Spann[/autotag] isn’t angry.

His mood is quite the contrary, according to Spann (19-6 MMA, 5-1 UFC), who thinks his fight night foe Anthony Smith (35-16 MMA, 12-8 UFC) is misplacing intensity for anger. Entering his first promotional main event, which takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Spann couldn’t be happier.

“I think maybe the tone that came off (in the pre-fight promotional videos),” Spann said at a pre-fight news conference Wednesday. “It wasn’t the fact that I’m angry when I said what I said. I’m not angry. I’m very, very happy. I have a lot of respect for him. I’m happy. I’m in a good place. I’ve seen where this takes my family. I’ve seen a glimpse of it, like, getting to take my wife on a trip.

“… For the longest year hear, ‘You can do this,’ or ‘You can do that.’ But for the longest when you’re fighting for free hearing that you can be champion of the world, you’re looking down a dark tunnel. Now, I’ve gotten to the point where I can see glimpses of the light. Now, it just makes me stronger, makes me freer. I’m happy because I’m actually seeing fruits of my labor now.”

[lawrence-related id=994481,993160]

Spann, 30, is 9-1 in his most recent 10 outings. He’s only lost once, a knockout defeat that came in a wild back-and-forth brawl against Johnny Walker in September 2020. Through his ups and downs, Spann has become stronger – and more passionate. Perhaps his passion is mistaken for anger.

“It’s not that I’m angry, man,” Spann said. “I’m fighting for something. I can’t let anyone take it. It doesn’t matter who shows up, who it is. I can’t let anyone take it. It’s not anger. I’m not angry. Now, I feel like I’m in a therapy session. ‘You are angry.’ ‘I am not angry.’ … I don’t know where it came from but it doesn’t matter because it won’t change anything. The result is still going to be the same.”

As for the fight, Spann isn’t concerned with what Smith brings to the table. He doesn’t watch tape or train too specifically for the stylistic matchup during camp. Whatever Smith throws at him, Spann anticipates he’ll be prepared.

“Honestly, I don’t know what he’s going to try to do and I really don’t care because it’s not going to work,” Spann said. “The plan, if it goes according to how I’ve been seeing it, it doesn’t matter what he (does). It won’t work.”

UFC Fight Night 187 medical suspensions: Belal Muhammad faces 30 days after eye poke

Belal Muhammad isn’t facing a long time off after suffering a nasty eye poke against Leon Edwards at UFC Fight Night 187.

[mm-video type=video id=01f0rk9xdw5jzbn5hn playlist_id=01eqvpne7c1q486dvv player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f0rk9xdw5jzbn5hn/01f0rk9xdw5jzbn5hn-0004b90e420f9325ab0f18363a480e2c.jpg]

Thankfully, [autotag]Belal Muhammad[/autotag] isn’t facing a potentially long medical suspension coming out of UFC Fight Night 187.

Muhammad’s first headliner vs. Leon Edwards was ruled a no contest after Edwards accidentally poked him in the eye 18 seconds into the second round of their welterweight fight. Visibly in pain, Muhammad was unable to continue and, as a result, the fight was stopped without a winner.

Muhammad (18-3 MMA, 9-3 UFC) was able to provide a positive update shortly after, stating that he suffered no permanent damage to his eye and was slowly starting to get his vision back. The medical report supports his claim as Muhammad will be prohibited from any contact for 21 days with no contest for 30 days, until he receives doctor clearance for his right eye.

MMA Junkie on Tuesday obtained the full list of suspensions from MixedMartialArts.com, the Association of Boxing Commissions’ official record keeper.

UFC Fight Night 187 results: Ryan Spann runs through Misha Cirkunov in first-round TKO

Ryan Spann gets back in the win column in a big way.

[autotag]Ryan Spann[/autotag] made sure to bounce back in impressive fashion from his first UFC loss.

The rising light heavyweight contender picked up a first-round TKO win, stopping Misha Cirkunov at UFC Fight Night 187. The official end came at the 1:11 mark of Round 1.

The light heavyweight bout was the UFC Fight Night 187 co-main event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. It streamed on ESPN+.

It was a quick night of work for Spann (19-6 MMA, 5-1 UFC).

The 29-year-old immediately put the pressure on Cirkunov (15-6 MMA, 6-4 UFC) and quickly landed, setting the pace in the fight. Spann hit with a low blow, but the fight quickly resumed after getting halted by the referee. Seconds after the low blow, Spann connected with a straight right that sent Cirkunov to the canvas. Spann chose not to pounce and let the fight get restarted back on the feet. From there, Spann dropped the Canadian once again, but this time followed up with ground-and-pound for the finish.

“Superman” is back in the win column after having suffered his first UFC loss back in September. Spann was stopped by Johnny Walker in the first round of their contest. Prior to the defeat to Walker, Spann was on an eight-fight wining streak.

On the other hand, Cirkunov falls to 2-4 in his past six UFC bouts.

In the post-fight interview, Spann showed interest in facing the winner of Anthony Smith vs. Jimmy Crute, which goes down next month at UFC 261.

UFC on ESPN+ 51 Cirkunov vs. Spann: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Records: Cirkunov 15-5 | Spann 18-6

Fight result (2-way line or money line)

SPANN (+105) is a nice value as a short ‘dog in this one. He is looking for redemption after walking into a KO/TKO in Round 1 against Johnny Walker last time out on the Covington-Woodley card Sept. 19, 2020. That snapped an eight-bout win streak dating back to LFA 27 Nov. 10, 2017. Since arriving at the UFC level he has recorded decision wins, a submission and a KO/TKO, so he has shown versatility.

Cirkunov (-125) is also versatile, posting 4.18 significant strikes landed per minute while he has a ridiculous 65.42 significant strikes accuracy percentage. He also has a nice 4.42 takedown average and 57.89 takedown accuracy percentage with 2.41 submission average. This is going to be a war, and is a good bet for the fight of the night.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Over/Under (O/U)

All nine of Cirkunov’s fights since arriving at the UFC level have finished inside the distance, while Spann has finishes in three of his past four. It’s too expensive to take No (-375) on ‘will the fight go the distance?’, but you might want to take a chance on UNDER 1.5 ROUNDS (-150) as both of these fighters look to fire out of the chute and get the quick finish. There won’t be a lot of standing around and inactivity with these two.

SPANN BY KO/TKO, DQ OR SUBMISSION (+170) on the 5-way line is also worth a look, as “Superman” can help you almost double up if he can get the early finish.
