Ryan Pellum: Oregon football is where I will best develop

Ryan Pellum discusses his flip from USC to Oregon.

Ryan Pellum made an early signing period flip, the four-star wide receiver changing things up and committing to Oregon. The California wide receiver had been a USC commit.

The switch by Pellum to Oregon came as a bit of a surprise. He had been committed to USC since June 26, one week after he took an official visit to the Trojans.

He played for Millikan High School (Long Beach, California) where this fall season, he had 66  catches for 991 yards with 11 touchdowns.

The switch to Oregon from USC, Pellum said, was multiple on his part. But in large part, he sought a place where he was comfortable and could be developed for the next level.

“I see myself best being developed as a receiver there and my relations with the coaching staff played a part,” Pellum told USA TODAY High School Sports.

The coaching staff at Oregon is certainly making an impression, with head coach Danny Lanning putting together a recruiting class that is fourth in the nation.

Oregon finished the season 11-2 and will play in the Fiesta Bowl.

“Having older guys to show me the ways will guide me,” Pellum said.

“I like the coach’s attitude and the plan that he has for the program.”

The 5-foot-11, 170-pound wide receiver plans to enroll at Oregon in January. He said he will compete at wide receiver and kick returner.

He is the No. 99 recruit in the nation according to the 247Sports Composite.

USC fans react to Ryan Pellum’s last-minute flip to Oregon Ducks

Oregon did it to USC again.

Oregon and Dan Lanning outfoxed Lincoln Riley and USC at the 11th hour — again. Last year it was Josh Conerly in the spring, preceding the 2022 season. USC did well in 2022, but when the Trojans’ offensive line regressed this season, it was hard to ignore the point that if Conerly had been on the 2023 USC offensive line, the Trojans probably would have had much better results than what they produced this year.

Now, another Oregon recruiting win over USC in a last-minute change has Trojan fans in one of two mindsets. Some are angry. Others are saying that wide receiver recruits aren’t as significant as linebackers or linemen. Either way, it’s still a very uncomfortable place for USC to be, knowing how much Oregon cleaned up on the trail and in the transfer portal.

Here’s how the reactions all went down on Wednesday. What’s your reaction?

Receiver Ryan Pellum flips commitment from USC to Oregon

Oregon beats USC at the 11th hour. Again.

In a notable signing day move, 2024 Long Beach Millikan wide receiver Ryan Pellum has flipped his commitment from the USC Trojans to the Oregon Ducks.

Pellum initially committed to the Trojans in June, but on Wednesday he decided he wanted to play college football in Eugene for Dan Lanning and the Ducks.

The 247Sports Composite rates Pellum as the No. 99 overall player in 2024, and the No. 19 receiver in the nation.

Pellum is the second wide receiver to flip to the Ducks on Wednesday, with former Ohio State receiver Jeremiah McClellan announcing earlier in the day that he would be signing with the Ducks instead of the Buckeyes.

Keep in mind that Ryan Pellum is also the nephew of Don Pellum, a former Oregon coach who spent 23 seasons in Eugene, primarily as a linebacker coach.

The 5-foot-11, 170-pounder caught 66 passes for 991 yards and 11 touchdowns in his senior campaign.

This move will create fresh discussion about Oregon’s ability to make successful late-stage runs at USC targets. USC thought it had Josh Conerly sewn up last year, but Oregon swooped in and grabbed him at the last instant. It was similarly the case here, with the difference being that Pellum had previously committed to USC.

SIGNED: 4-star Ryan Pellum is officially a Duck

The Oregon Ducks officially signed 4-star WR Ryan Pellum, adding him to the 2024 class.

That receiver room at Oregon is going to have to make room for one more.

Wide receiver Ryan Pellum, once thought to be a lock for USC, has changed his mind on signing day and has signed on to be an Oregon Duck.

At 5-foot-11 and 170 pounds out of Long Beach, Pellum turned down Alabama, both Arizona school and of course the Trojans in order to become a Duck.

According to national recruiting analyst Greg Biggins of 247Sports:

Pellum is a two-way player who is being recruited primarily as a receiver. He shows the ability to be a game-breaker and a true home run hitter from anywhere on the field. He’s a natural pass catcher with strong hands and is a smooth route runner. He’s explosive after the catch as well and should be an early impact guy in the return game. He’s a fiery competitor, which you like, but it’s also something he needs to reign in at times as his emotions can get the best of him. At his best, he’s an impact player with the talent to play immediately at the college level. He has the skill set and toughness to be big time corner in college as well but prefers the offensive side of the ball.

It will be interesting to see how the Ducks plan on using Pellum, perhaps has another Tez Johnson-type, a receiver in the slot as well as a kick returner. Both would make a lot sense. The last player in this mold that spurned USC for the Ducks is De’Anthony Thomas and that worked out all right.

Here are some highlights from Pellum:

Duck fans celebrate again as Oregon flips 4-star WR Ryan Pellum from USC Trojans

Oregon Duck fans celebrated their second flip of the day, this time taking 4-star WR Ryan Pellum from the USC Trojans.

One flip wasn’t enough. Dan Lanning wanted to make it two.

After securing four-star wide receiver Jeremiah McClellan over the Ohio State Buckeyes on Wednesday morning, the Oregon Ducks flipped four-star WR Ryan Pellum on Wednesday afternoon. He changed his commitment from the USC Trojans.

With the addition, Oregon has three wide receivers in the 2024 class and one of the best recruiting classes in the nation.

Pellum is the No. 99 player overall and the No. 19 WR on the 247Sports composite. He gives a big boost to the Ducks’ 2024 class, which is ranked inside the top 10.

The Ducks have been recruiting Pellum for a long time, and the Millikan High School star from Long Beach, California, was also fond of the Ducks during that process. Ultimately the efforts by Lanning and wide receivers coach Junior Adams were enough to persuade the blue-chip pass-catcher to flip to the Ducks.

As you would expect, Duck fans were once again thrilled to see a flip from Lanning, especially when it came at the expense of Lincoln Riley and the USC Trojans. Here’s how they reacted on social media:

The Oregon Ducks landed a commitment from 4-star WR Ryan Pellum, who flipped from the USC Trojans.

One wide receiver surprise apparently wasn’t enough for Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks. They broke out the spatulas and flipped another one.

On Wednesday afternoon, four-star wide receive Ryan Pellum announced he would flip his commitment from the USC Trojans to the Ducks. On the 247Sports composite, Pellum is the No. 99 overall player and the No. 19 WR in the nation. He gives a big boost to the Ducks’ 2024 class, which is ranked inside the top 10.

Pellum is the second wide receiver to flip to the Ducks on Wednesday. Former Ohio State commit Jeremiah McClellan announced earlier in the day that he was signing with the Ducks.

It’s likely the quarterback situations at both schools played a factor as well. With Dillon Gabriel transferring from Oklahoma to Oregon, the Ducks are set with one of the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy in 2024 under center. USC is searching for its next QB; Caleb Williams is graduating this offseason.

It is unclear how much of a role Pellum will have early in his career because the Ducks have a lot of talent at the top of the depth chart. But he will certainly have an opportunity to show what he can do.

Four-star WR Ryan Pellum commits to USC with help of his baby

Ryan Pellum committed to USC this week — and had some help from his baby son, whose onesie revealed his college decision.

Ryan Pellum pulled off one of the more unique commitments this week when he announced his commitment to USC: He revealed his decision with use of his baby son’s onesie.

The four-star wide receiver, entering his senior year of high school, sat with Oregon and USC hats on the table in front of him as somebody handed him the baby. He turned the boy around, revealing the “Fight on!” and the two-finger gesture on the clothing.

It was one of the cuter moments of any college reveal in recent memory, and potentially ever. Watch it below on the video posted to 247Sports’ Twitter account:

Pellum, listed at 5-foot-11 and 170 pounds, is ranked on the 247Sports Composite as the No. 14 receiver in the class of 2024 and No. 64 player overall. He had 42 offers, including from programs like Alabama, Georgia, LSU and Michigan. With Oregon and USC as his final two choices, the Millikan (Long Beach, Calif.) student decided to stay home and go to school in Southern California.

After breaking out with 721 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns as a sophomore, Pellum took a step forward in his junior season with 1,028 receiving yards while matching his 10 touchdowns from the season before. With the commitment, USC now has two top-100 wide receivers in its class of 2024, with Pellum and Xavier Jordan (No. 67 on the composite) of Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) poised to join Lincoln Riley’s program.

4-star WR Ryan Pellum announces commitment between Oregon and USC

The recruiting battle between Lincoln Riley and Dan Lanning continues, and the latest round went to the USC Trojans.

On Monday afternoon, four-star wide receiver Ryan Pellum committed to the Trojans over the Oregon Ducks. That wasn’t a major surprise since the blue-chip pass-catcher canceled his official visit to Eugene not long after taking his one to USC.

A number of recruiting predictions came in since; all projected Pellum to the Trojans.

Pellum is rated by 247Sports as the No. 69 overall player in the 2024 class, and No. 14 WR. He is a great pick-up for USC, which moved into the No. 8 spot of the national recruiting rankings with the pickup, one spot behind the Ducks.

4-star WR sets commitment date with Oregon and USC as final two options

4-star WR sets commitment date with Oregon and USC as final two options

The Oregon Ducks and USC Trojans will find out in the coming days if they are able to land one of the top remaining wide receivers in the 2024 class.

4-star WR Ryan Pellum announced over the weekend that he will officially make his commitment on June 26, with a final two of the Ducks and Trojans. While it is technically a two-man race to land the WR, there is an overwhelming feeling that USC will be the ultimate destination.

Earlier in June, Pellum took an official visit to Los Angeles, and was schedule to take an OV to Eugene the week after. However, following his trip to USC, Pellum ended up canceling his visit to Oregon, so the Ducks did not get a chance to make their pitch. This has led several recruiting insiders to log predictions for the Trojans to land the player from Millikan High School in Long Beach, California.

Pellum is rated by 247Sports as the No. 14 WR and No. 69 overall player in the 2024 class.

After the two teams battled for recruits like Josh Conerly, Jahlil Florence, Duce Robinson, and several others over the past couple of years, it is now 4-star WR Ryan Pellum who will decide between Ducks and Trojans going forward.

Pellum, who is rated as the No. 69 overall player and No. 14 WR in 2024, announced on Monday that those two schools would be his primary focus going forward.

Pellum took an official visit to USC last weekend, and he is set to take an official visit to Oregon this coming weekend. We will see how quickly he makes his decision after weighing both options next week.
