The New Orleans Saints added tight end Josh Pederson to the roster after a successful workout on Aug. 6, in which he tried out alongside veteran players like Demetrius Harris, Gabe Holmes, and Charles Jones. Backup tight end Ethan Wolf recently suffered an injury and should miss a week a more, though he’s expected to avoid the injured reserve list. Still, more bodies were needed during his absence.

Pederson’s name may sound familiar as he is the son of the former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson. Earlier this offseason, Pederson signed with the San Francisco 49ers after going undrafted from Louisiana-Monroe after the 2021 NFL draft. He was waived on Wednesday, Aug. 4. Pederson played in 35 games over the course of four seasons with ULM in which he recorded 99 receptions for 1,191 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns.

In other roster news, Saints defensive tackle Ryan Glasgow was placed on the reserve/retired list after announcing his retirement on Saturday. The move comes as a slight surprise as Glasgow had seen time with the first string unit during training camp, but Sean Payton explained that he’s hanging up his cleats to pursue his master’s degree. Glasgow’s career has been riddled by injuries as he has dealt with multiple knee issues including his ACL. This is a decision he has been pondering for some time.

The defensive interior was already thin coming into camp due to a suspension levied against David Onyemata, as well as the departures of  Malcom Brown and Sheldon Rankins in free agency. Glasgow had an opportunity to make his case for playing time this upcoming season during camp. Their younger players have done well in camp, but stay tuned in case the Saints bring in veteran free agents like Geno Atkins or Kawann Short.

David Onyemata to miss 6 games with NFL suspension

David Onyemata to miss 6 games with NFL suspension

New Orleans Saints defensive tackle David Onyemata alluded earlier Friday morning on Instagram that he was facing a suspension to start the season. According to him, the NFL was preparing to suspend him for use of a banned substance.

Now, the NFL has just released a statement that concludes Onyemata will be required to miss the first six games of the season. That means he will be eligible for reinstatement on Tuesday, October 26. The defensive tackle will miss the Monday Night Football matchup against the Seattle Seahawks the evening prior to his reinstatement.

The Saints defensive line has already taken a hit with the departure of two of its key cogs in Sheldon Rankins and Malcolm Brown. Onyemata was supposed to be a leader for the unit on and off the field.

While New Orleans may look for a replacement for the veteran, they will have to rely on younger players such as Shy Tuttle, Malcolm Roach, and Ryan Glasgow.

However, the loss could be eased as the Saints defense largely employs a defensive line with heavy rotations. Still, New Orleans could be looking to add a veteran free agent ahead of training camp in order to help mitigate the loss.

Saints bring up several players from their practice squad vs. Falcons

The New Orleans Saints called up tight end Garrett Griffin and defensive tackle Ryan Glasgow from their practice squad against the Falcons.

The New Orleans Saints completed a series of roster moves before their Week 11 kickoff with the Atlanta Falcons, including two call-ups from their practice squad after still-developing injury situations gained clarity. Here’s what you need to know about this week’s new additions:

Beefing up the interior defensive line is a priority for the New Orleans Saints. After signing free agent Christian Ringo to their practice squad, the Saints reported a tryout with fourth-year pro Ryan Glasgow on the NFL daily transactions wire.

Glasgow, 27 years old and listed at 6-foot-3 and 300 pounds, was a fourth-round pick by the Cincinnati Bengals during the 2017 draft. He’s been credited with 41 combined tackles and a fumble recovery in 24 games for the Bengals over the last three years, though he missed a lot of time in 2018 and 2019 with subsequent knee injuries.

He joined the Houston Texans practice squad for most of October and recently spent a week with the New England Patriots. Before entering the NFL, Glasgow appeared in 45 games with the Michigan Wolverines in college, totaling 77 tackles (13.5 for loss of yards).

While New Orleans has enough quality players at the top of the depth chart to fill in for the injured Sheldon Rankins, they could use more depth to pad out reps in practice. David Onyemata remains the clear-cut starting defensive tackle next to nose tackle Malcom Brown, with youngsters Shy Tuttle and Malcolm Roach rotating in behind him. Adding experienced veterans like Ringo and Glasgow to the practice squad and scout team would make sense.

Patriots sign WR Donte Moncrief, DT Ryan Glasgow to practice squad

Could Moncrief make an impact?

For the second straight day, the New England Patriots have added a receiver and a defensive tackle. The Patriots signed wideout Donte Moncrief and defensive tackle Ryan Glasgow to the practice squad on Wednesday.

New England also traded for receiver Isaiah Ford and signed defensive tackle Isaiah Mack off waivers on Tuesday. It seems to be a signal that they’re attempting to address their biggest weaknesses so far this year, with the passing offense and the rushing defense looking unimpressive.

Moncrief was a Colts’ 2014 third-round pick. He has played for five teams before joining New England, and he has 204 career catches, 2,561 receiving yards and 21 touchdowns. His best season came in 2015 when he had 64 catches, 733 yards and six touchdowns.

Glasgow was a 2017 fourth-round pick, who landed with the Cincinnati Bengals. He has 41 career tackles, four tackles for loss and three quarterback hits in 24 games played. He spent some time on the Houston Texans’ practice squad this year, but they cut him on Sept. 28.

Report: Texans to sign defensive linemen Corey Liuget, Ryan Glasgow to practice squad

The Houston Texans are adding veteran depth to their defensive line by signing Corey Liuget and Ryan Glasgow to the practice squad.

The Houston Texans are adding veteran depth to their defensive line via the practice squad.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the club will sign defensive tackle Ryan Glasgow to the practice squad and also defensive lineman Corey Liuget.

The Texans had worked out Glasgow, and they also brought in Liuget for visits early in September and also on Friday last week. The two veterans have been on the Texans’ radar for a month.

Houston needs to find a way to beef up their run defense, and Glasgow and Liuget could provide them that chance. In Week 3, the Texans marked rookie defensive tackle Ross Blacklock as inactive. On the ground, Houston’s run defense gave out in the second half with Pittsburgh finishing with 169 en route to a 28-21 win that drops Houston to 0-3 for the second time in three seasons.

Texans work out NT Miles Brown, DT Ryan Glasgow

The Houston Texans worked out Miles Brown, Ryan Glasgow, and two other veterans on Tuesday.

The Houston Texans are tacitly acknowledging they need help up front on the defensive line.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, the Texans worked out nose tackle Miles Brown on Tuesday. The former 2019 undrafted free agent from Wofford played nine games for the Arizona Cardinals last year, collecting four total tackles and a tackle for loss. The Cardinals waived Brown at the end of training camp this year.

Glasgow is a former 2017 Cincinnati Bengals fourth-round pick. The 6-3, 300-pound defensive tackle played 24 games for the AFC North club, starting in three. Glasgow collected 41 total tackles along with four tackles for loss and three quarterback hits.

Houston also worked out defensive back Saquan Hampton and offensive tackle Jordan Mills.

The New Orleans Saints took Hampton in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, and he provided a tackle for loss in five games with New Orleans.

The Chicago Bears drafted Mills in the fifth round of the 2013 NFL Draft from Louisiana Tech. The 6-5, 316-pound bookend played for Chicago from 2013-14 before spending 2015 with the Dallas Cowboys, Detroit Lions, and Buffalo Bills, where he remained through the 2018 season. In 2019, Mills played for the Miami Dolphins and the Cardinals. Mills has 90 games under his belt with 84 career starts with the majority of them at right tackle.

4 players the Bengals should still try to trade during the NFL draft

The Cincinnati Bengals should still try to offload some players via trade during the NFL draft.

For now, the Cincinnati Bengals haven’t been active in the trade department during the 2020 NFL draft.

But that could change in a hurry.

With potential draft picks up for grabs and cap space to possibly shed, the Bengals should consider moving the following players during the remainder of the draft.

On one hand, the Bengals need some depth up front on the defensive side of the ball and Glasgow potentially offers some versatility and big play.

On the other, he’s played in just eight games over the last two seasons. The Bengals want fewer snaps for Geno Atkins moving forward but just signed D.J. Reader and could still add another versatile presence in the trenches as early as the second round.

If the Bengals can sell somebody on the idea Glasgow, a 2014 fourth-round pick, is back and healthy, it could net a return.
