Report: Giants signing former Alabama OLB Ryan Anderson to one-year deal

Former Alabama outside linebacker Ryan Anderson is signing a one-year deal with the New York Giants after several seasons in Washington.

This story originally appeared on Giants Wire.

The New York Giants have been remarkably busy over the past week, signing multiple players to help fill out their roster, including several big-money additions.

On Tuesday, New York continued adding names, but this time they did so with a focus on providing the defense more depth.

USA TODAY’s Art Stapleton reports the Giants have agreed to terms with outside linebacker Ryan Anderson.

Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports that the deal is for one year and worth $1.127 million.

Anderson was a second-round pick of the Washington Football Team out of Alabama in the 2017 NFL draft. He spent his entire career in D.C., appearing in 52 games (four starts) while recording 86 tackles (seven for a loss), five forced fumbles, 15 QB hits, six sacks and one pass defensed.

During his time in Washington, debate raged over Anderson’s position. Some believed he was better suited as an outside linebacker, while others believed he was a defensive end.

With the Giants, the 6-foot-2, 255-pound Anderson could see action at both positions in Patrick Graham’s “multiple” defense. He will also play a significant role on special teams.

In 2020, Anderson earned an overall grade of 49.6 from Pro Football Focus, including a run defense grade of 59.6 and a pass rush grade of 45.6. His best season came in 2018 when he earned an overall grade of 86.8.

Report: Washington working to sign CB Ronald Darby and K Dustin Hopkins to extensions

A new report from John Keim shows that Washington is trying to bring back Ronald Darby and Dustin Hopkins, while Ryan Anderson could be out the door.

With NFL Free Agency now just over a week away, all eyes in the Washington Football Team are starting to look at the players on the roster and what they might do going forward. We saw on Monday night that the team chose to place the franchise tag on RG Brandon Scherff for the second-straight year while they work to extend him for the future, but what about the other guys?

What about players like Ronald Darby, or Dustin Hopkins, or Ryan Anderson, or Kyle Allen? Well, ESPN’s John Keim offered an update on Tuesday morning, giving some hope for fans that want to see a couple of those names stick around.

A guy like Darby played very well on a one-year ‘prove it’ contract in 2020, and there is some belief that Washington has an easy answer to keeping their secondary at least intact by keeping him around to spell Kendall Fuller on the opposite side. If WFT can keep Darby and potentially draft a young CB or two, they are well on their way to creating a solid secondary.

As for Hopkins, we could take it or leave it. He didn’t have his best season in 2020, and there are a bunch of solid kickers available on the open market thanks to the salary cap restrictions, so it wouldn’t be a shock to see Ron Rivera move off from him. However, if Rivera wants to bring him back, who are we to say to?

An interesting note that Keim had was on DL Ryan Anderson, who has seen his playing time plummet over the past year and change. Ever since Washington transitioned to a 4-3 scheme, Anderson lost his position as an outside linebacker, and as a free agent, there is a belief that he will look for a new team where he can have an impact on the field.

5 Washington players who likely won’t be on the roster in 2021

Whether it’s because of free agency or salary dumps, these five players might end up looking for a new team in 2021.

As we head into the stretch run of the offseason and focus on which free agents the Washington Football Team can bring in to try and better their roster, one thing that Ron Rivera and others in the front office are focused on is who is already on the roster that they may not be able to keep.

Whether it’s because of a looming contract, or a need for another roster spot, not all 53 men who were on the active roster in 2020 will be back for another go-around. That’s the business of the NFL, and a handful of players are going to be shown the door in search of a new team to play for.

Here are five players who we feel pretty confident won’t be on Washington’s 2021 roster at the start of the season.

Washington Injury Report: Cornelius Lucas, Ryan Anderson out; Isaiah Wright, Dustin Hopkins questionable

It’s a loaded injury report for Washington this weekend, with Cornelius Lucas out, while Isaiah Wright and Dustin Hopkins are questionable.

The Washington Football Team will be hampered with injuries this weekend against the Cincinnati Bengals, with a number of players already designated as out for Sunday’s game before the weekend even starts.

Most notably, left tackle Cornelius Lucas will be forced to sit after missing the entire week of practice. Washington has been prepared for this, playing RT Morgan Moses at the LT position while plugging David Sharpe in at RT, and it looks like they’ll need to go ahead and implement that lineup for Sunday.

Another player who popped up on the report is rookie WR Isaiah Wright, who has been a revelation so far this season after going undrafted in April. Wright has been at practice all week, but carries a questionable designation for Sunday, as does kicker Dustin Hopkins, who has been dealing with a groin injury for the past couple of weeks.

Report: Washington willing to listen to trade calls for Ryan Kerrigan, Ryan Anderson

With the NFL Trade Deadline coming up, a report shows that Washington may be willing to deal Ryan Kerrigan and Ryan Anderson.

With the NFL Trade Deadline fast approaching on November 3rd, the question of whether or not the Washington Football Team will be buying or selling is a popular topic among fans.

According to a new report from NBC Sports Albert Breer, Washington is open to listening for offers on DE Ryan Kerrigan and DL Ryan Anderson, hoping to get something back in return for one of their excess defensive linemen. According to ESPN’s John Keim, however, the team has not received any calls for either player just yet.

The emergence of Chase Young and Montez Sweat is what allows Washington to openly shop these players, as neither Kerrigan nor Anderson has seen much of the field in the past few weeks. As the deadline gets closer, we are sure to hear more rumor swirling about.

Final Injury Report: Ryan Anderson is questionable, Brandon Scherff ready to play

Washington will enjoy the return of RG Brandon Scherff, but LB Ryan Anderson is listed as questionable to play.

The biggest injury news for the Washington Football Team doesn’t come from someone on the injury report, but rather the absence of Brandon Scherff’s name on the game report status. Scherff was activated from the Injured Reserve on Friday, giving him full clearance to return to the starting lineup on Sunday and give the offensive line a major boost.

Elsewhere on the injury report, linebacker Ryan Anderson has been listed as questionable to play, while OL Joshua Garnette and David Sharpe have been ruled out with an illness.

It’s also important to note that linebacker Cole Holcomb is expected to return to the field, as he’s been absent from the injury report all week.

The Bears are working kicker Kai Forbath among other special teamers

Chicago is doing their homework on some special teamers, including veteran kicker Kai Forbath, who will have a tryout with the Bears.

Following a disappointing outing on special teams in Week 5, it’s not a surprise to hear the Chicago Bears are trying out special teamers this week at Halas Hall. Although, they could simply be doing their due diligence in exploring the market.

According to the Chicago Tribune’s Brad Biggs, the Bears are scheduled to host some tryouts for kicker Kai Forbath, snapper Andrew DePaolo and punter Ryan Anderson on Wednesday.

As Biggs noted, it could be the Bears’ front office and coaches’ way of exploring what’s available on the free-agent market. But with Eddy Pineiro still on injured reserve with a groin injury and Cairo Santos’ fair share of struggles through the first quarter — he’s converted 5-of-7 field goals this season — it doesn’t hurt to take a look at what Forbath brings to the table.

Although, Forbath’s had his share of struggles in the kicking game. He was cut by the Dallas Cowboys back on Aug. 1 and has spent time on the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad this season. Most recently, Forbath had a tryout with the Atlanta Falcons.

And, as it does, the Bears’ kicker carousel continues.

Report: Washington involves LB Ryan Anderson in trade talks

As the final roster-cut is less than a day away, Washington is reportedly involving LB Ryan Anderson in trade talks.

With less than a day until the Washington Football Team is forced to cut down their roster to 53 players, a report has surfaced that LB Ryan Anderson is being raised in trade talks, according to Albert Breer.

Anderson has played well in training camp thus far, but his position on the Washington defense is an interesting one, as his position is unknown thanks to the switch from a 3-4 to 4-3 scheme. In the old 3-4 scheme, Anderson played as an outside linebacker, but in a 4-3 scheme, he doesn’t fit perfectly into a DE edge rusher role.

Nonetheless, Anderson has played well thus far, and Washington would likely be able to at the very least get a decent mid-round draft pick for him in return if they were to find a trade suitor. Stay tuned.

Rivera says DL Ryan Anderson ‘fits right in’ on Washington defensive line

Anderson has an uphill battle ahead of him trying to switch positions and fight for a spot on the defensive line, but he’s impressed so far.

With the star-studded defensive line that already exists in Washington, it will be hard for players on the edges to find a spot where they can make a difference. When competing with numerous former first-round picks, even getting an opportunity to get reps at the position and prove that you deserve some time there is an uphill battle.

When you consider that playing on the DL isn’t a normal position for Ryan Anderson, who slotted in as an outside linebacker in Washington’s 3-4 scheme the last few seasons, it may be even tougher to earn his shot going forward.

However, through just a single padded practice — Anderson was held out of Tuesday’s action with a minor injury — the scouting report on this fourth-year player is glowing, according to his new coach.

Being able to work his way into a rotation that includes Chase Young, Montez Sweat, Ryan Kerrigan, Daron Payne, Jonathan Allen, and Matt Ioannidis is going to be a huge challenge for Anderson, but it will be a major accomplishment if he’s able to transition to the new spot and get the job done. If the Day One report for him is any indication of what we can expect going forward, there will be a spot for Anderson on this potentially dominant defensive front.
