Rutgers men’s soccer moves into a tie for third place in the Big Ten after Friday win over Michigan

Rutgers men’s soccer beat Michigan on Friday night.

A tight 2-1 win over Michigan on Friday night has pushed Rutgers men’s soccer into a tie for third place in the Big Ten. With one conference match left to play, the Scarlet Knights are within striking distance of potentially finishing with a top-two finish in the conference.

The win sees Rutgers sitting at 7-3-5 (3-2-2 Big Ten, 11 points) and tied on points with Ohio State for third place in the conference.

Michigan came into the match short-handed with several players missing due to illness. This led Chaka Daley, in his eleventh season with the Wolverines as head coach, to keep a defensive posture, playing two low blocks. to absorb the pressure from Rutgers.

The visitors managed to outshoot Rutgers (11:7) even as Rutgers held the edge in shots on goal (5:3).

Goals by M.D. Myers in the first half and Ian Abbey in the second half lifted Rutgers to the win. The strike by Abbey was a tight finish:

Rutgers closes out the season with a match at Penn State on Oct. 25 and then an out-of-conference game again UCLA on Oct. 29.

How did the Rutgers Olympic sports do this week?

The second week of October was full of mixed results for Rutgers athletics.

For Rutgers Athletics, this past week included wins and highlight reel plays. That isn’t a bad combination smack dab in the middle of Big Ten action.

While football had the week off, every other fall sport was still in action. Volleyball continued to struggle, but men’s and women’s soccer were both able to record a win.

Heading into mid-October, men’s soccer is sixth in the Big Ten, but they only trail fifth-place Penn State by one game. However, for women’s soccer, they are still in the top ten nationally. If the fall season were to end today, they would be the third-best team in the Big Ten.

Field hockey continued to be a bright spot, and Sophia Howard made her case for save of the year. As October marches on, however, wins are at a premium with playoffs on the horizon. For the Scarlet Knights, it was another productive week for fall athletics.

For Rutgers Athletics, the Big Ten season is now in full swing.

Wins are at a premium with the playoffs on the horizon.

This past week, women’s soccer continued their impressive start with a win over Indiana that included a stellar effort from Megan McClelland. The Men’s team was able to force a tie in a matchup with Indiana that saw little offense past the opening thirty minutes,

On the gridiron Rutgers fell short in front of a sold-out stadium at SHI Stadium. While the Scarlet Knights lost their third straight game, there were a few career performances in a matchup against Nebraska that went down to the wire.

As Rutgers athletics continued to battle it out in October, Women’s Soccer and Men’s soccer continued to rise in the Big Ten standings.

Rutgers men’s soccer benefitting from location and MLS academy ties

Rutgers men’s soccer is building its roster with a very strong MLS academy flair.

[mm-video type=video id=01fn59p8v9714xx5va92 playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fn59p8v9714xx5va92/01fn59p8v9714xx5va92-8e138ebf36bfcf0ab7310cd13d86814e.jpg]

Jim McElderry’s Thanksgiving plans includes the usual dose of food and family. But for the Rutgers men’s soccer coach, there with a healthy mix of soccer as well. McElderry plans on hitting up academy and club games over the holiday weekend as he turns his focus from on the field to recruiting.

Rutgers finished the season 9-6-2 and with a 3-4-1 record in the Big Ten. It was a successful season for Rutgers and continued the development of the program under McElderry, now in his third year with the program.

One major reason for the growth of the program is a budding relationship with the local MLS academies. His roster includes several players who were developed through the academy system of the New York Red Bulls and the Philadelphia Union.

“I don’t think we worry too much about their style and our style and it’s a little bit different. But what they both do – and we can include NYCFC as well – they attract good players, serious players, players who know how to balance their time well,” McElderry told ‘Rutgers Wire’ this week in a phone interview.

“You’re getting someone who is dedicated.”

The MLS academy system is unique in professional sports, taking players as young as middle school and developing them with an eye towards playing professional soccer at the MLS level. Some players will opt for the college system and McElderry has certainly done a good job of targeting those players who want an education before potentially signing with a  professional team.

Jackson Temple, named this season to the All-Big Ten Second Team, came up through the Union academy. Joey Zalinsky and Matthew Acosta, both named to the conference’s freshman team, are Red Bulls academy products. Nico Rosamilia, a surprise omission from the Big Ten freshman list, also played for the Red Bulls.

Rutgers is ideally situated between three MLS academies, allowing the program to benefit from three professional clubs that have a tremendous track record of scouting and developing players.

McElderry said that “Our location is really important and also the new facilities we have here.” He also highlighted the new Rodkin Center as well as the team’s recently developed soccer practice fields as key components in recruiting these academy players.

The Union and Red Bulls have among the best academy systems in MLS, producing multiple professional players including several currently part of the United States national team. NYCFC, although having arrived just a few years ago, is already producing quality players including Gio Reyna and Joe Scally, both starters for good teams in the German Bundesliga.

The quality of the facilities, a major upgrade for Rutgers in recent years, is a selling point for players used to training and playing at an MLS club’s practice center.

“They want to play. When they come and visit, they realize it is the next step for them,” McElderry said. “If they don’t get that pro contract then we become a good place for them to get that education and play at a high level.”

Rutgers athletics might have had the last three days off, but make no mistake about it: their past week was jam-packed. Fans of the Scarlet Knights are aware of the struggles Rutgers has gone through in football, losing three straight to ranked Big Ten opponents.

As usual, the rest of the Olympic/team sports continue to make waves in their respective sports. The fall season is certainly being paced by women’s soccer and field hockey, both of which are top 10 respectively in the national polls and are dominating in Big Ten play.

Men’s soccer as well as women’s volleyball are also having very solid seasons.

Let’s look back at the week that was in Rutgers athletics.

Rutgers men’s soccer with a chance to start racking up results

Rutgers men’s soccer has emerged from a toughs stretch of games and now faces Michigan State this weekend.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01fc3gzhz7qrm49z6q player_id=none image=https://rutgerswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

This is a big weekend for Rutgers men’s soccer with a chance to right their results against a Big Ten opponent.

Following a 2-0 midweek loss to Penn State, No. 23 Rutgers men’s soccer is 7-2-2 and 1-2-2 in the Big Ten. Rutgers hasn’t won in their last three games, two losses, and a scoreless draw at then-No. 8 Maryland (the Terrapins are now No. 12).

On Sunday, they face Michigan State at 2:30 PM at Yurcak Field. The match has big implications for seeding in the Big Ten Tournament.

“I think the theme we’ve talked to our guys about is that in these games, against top teams, the difference between winning and losing is really razor-thin. If you really sit down and evaluate our game against Penn State, we had long moments where we thought we played really well and there were some moments where they played very well and that’s going to happen when you play great teams,” McElderry said during his weekly podcast with Dom Savino.

“If you look at the standings, we’ve played a really tough conference schedule so far; the other games are certainly not easy by any stretch. But we’ve played some teams that are really in form, we’ve picked up four points against some tough places to play so we feel good about that. But of course, you want to win your home games.”

None of Rutgers remaining four games (three in the Big Ten) are against an opponent that is currently ranked.

Rutgers men’s soccer coach Jim McElderry: ‘We have enough here to be one of the top teams in the country’

No. 24 Rutgers men’s soccer earns a solid road draw at No. 8 Maryland on Tuesday night.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01fc3gzhz7qrm49z6q player_id=none image=https://rutgerswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

It was both a statement and a bounceback game from Rutgers men’s soccer on Tuesday night, who went on the road and secured a scoreless draw at No. 8 Maryland.

Especially impressive was how Rutgers responded following a Thursday night 2-0 loss at home to Wisconsin. The Scarlet Knights put together a solid performance in churning out the road draw, an impressive result as they continue to stack points in Big Ten play.

With the tie, Rutgers is now 7-1-2. They are ranked No. 24 in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll.

“We had a tough game against Wisconsin and I think we were a little disappointed in how that game went. For us to bounce back…on the road, against what I think [is] a real quality opponent,” Rutgers men’s soccer head coach Jim McElderry said after the game.

“I think our guys showed we can compete with anybody in the country. We have to play well, we have to compete every play. We have enough here to be one of the top teams in the country if we can just compete every moment.”

The Scarlet Knights are 1-1-1 in Big Ten play. They play Penn State next, at home, on October 5.

Late in the second half, attacker Jackson Temple very nearly put Rutgers ahead with a shot from 16 yards out that clanged off the post.

The Philadelphia Union Academy prospect has been one of the top players in the Big Ten this year.

Saying “I thought we were up for it tonight,” McElderry liked the response of his team after injuries and setbacks in the first half could have made this a tough game. Instead, Rutgers responded well.

“Honestly, I thought they were fantastic tonight. This is a really tough place to play, they’re an excellent team, really good going forward,” McElderry said.

“And we had some opportunities today to say ‘It wasn’t our day.’ A couple guys got injured, it could have been easy for us to not be up for the challenge. But I just thought they were fantastic. We played a couple of guys who had big impacts. Really proud of our group.”

Rutgers men’s and women’s soccer both ranked in latest polls

Both the Rutgers men’s soccer team and Rutger women’s soccer team are ranked in the latest United Soccer Coaches poll.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01fc3gzhz7qrm49z6q player_id=none image=https://rutgerswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Rutgers soccer is well represented in each of the latest United Soccer Coaches NCAA Top 25 Polls released on Tuesday afternoon.

Fresh off a 2-1 win over Indiana on Friday and a 1-0 win over a very good UPenn team on Monday night, the Rutgers men’s soccer teams checks in at No. 21 in the nation. It is the first time this year that the men have been ranked.

The Rutgers women’s team, following a home win over preseason Big Ten favorite Penn State, moved up seven spots to No. 9.

Following a pair of disappointing losses two weeks ago to Princeton at home and Georgetown on the road, the women have won two straight. They beat Drexel 4-0 at home on Thursday before defeating national powerhouse Penn State 2-1 over the weekend.

The women are currently 6-2-0 on the year. The ranking within the top 10 nationally comes after the Scarlet Knights were ranked No. 25 in the United Soccer Coaches preseason poll. The rather steady climb is deserving of a women’s program that is solid on both ends of the field.

For the men, who were unranked in the preseason, the win at then No. 11 Indiana is program transforming. The Hoosiers, who made the NCAA Championship Game last year, have been among the best collegiate programs in not just the Big Ten but the nation for over three decades. The win by the men certainly validates the program’s undefeated start to the season as well as the rebuild undertaken by head coach Jim McElderry, now in his third season at Rutgers.

The men are currently 7-0-1. They didn’t receive any votes in last week’s United Soccer Coaches poll.

Several of the bigger contributors to the program have come from local MLS academies. Left back Chris Tiao and forward Nico Rosamilia are both products of the New York Red Bulls Academy. Wide attacker Jackson Temple, a junior, comes from the Philadelphia Union Academy.

Rutgers men’s soccer up to No. 12 in latest rankings

Rutgers men’s soccer is now ranked following a big upset win on Friday over Indiana.

[mm-video type=video id=01fg25s1s6b2pqmgtw6b playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fg25s1s6b2pqmgtw6b/01fg25s1s6b2pqmgtw6b-d018b0f2cd75e11338fd5f3f74dde5f6.jpg]

It was a big weekend for Rutgers men’s soccer, who are not only nationally ranked but also on the cusp of being a top 10 team. On Friday night, Rutgers beat No. 11 Indiana, vaulting the Scarlet Knights from being unranked and now firmly in the rankings.

Rutgers is now No. 12 in the nation according to the latest rankings from TopDrawerSoccer. This is one spot higher than the Indiana side that Rutgers beat on the road this past weekend. The Hoosiers played in the national championship game last season.

It has been a strong start to the season for Rutgers, who are 6-0-1 (1-0-0 Big Ten) so far this season. Goals by freshman Nico Rosamilia and junior winger Jackson Temple led Rutgers to the upset win and a potentially a defining moment in head coach Jim McElderry’s rebuilding of the men’s soccer program.

They play a strong UPenn team on Monday night, a side that has legitimate NCAA Tournament aspirations. UPenn is 3-1-1 on the year. These two teams last played in 2019, a 1-1 tie at the Quakers.

This is an experienced Rutgers side with 19 players on the roster this year who saw time last season.
