Rutgers men’s lacrosse finishes regular season with top 20 ranking

Rutgers men’s lacrosse had an overall strong season.

Rutgers men’s lacrosse saw this NCAA Tournament streak end, even as they finished top 20 in the nation.

Despite the lack of a postseason for Rutgers, this was still a solid season for the Scarlet Knights. Especially, considering how strong the Big Ten was this season.

Rutgers finished the season 8-6 (1-4 Big Ten) following a quarterfinals loss to Maryland in the Big Ten Tournament. They were No. 19 in the final Inside Lacrosse regular season rankings.

Rutgers did not make the NCAA Tournament following postseason berths the previous two seasons. Last year, for the first time in program history, the Scarlet Knights made the tournament’s final four.

The failure to either get a second win in conference play or win one game in the Big Ten Tournament Tournament likely doomed Rutgers’s postseason outlook. A mid-February 14-13 loss at Army in the third game of the season might also have hurt Rutgers’ tournament aspirations.

Four Big Ten teams made the NCAA Tournament, with Michigan automatically qualifying following their taking the Big Ten Tournament title.

Scott Ross is providing Rutgers men’s lacrosse with a boost offensively

Scott Ross is off to a strong start this season.

So far this season, Rutgers men’s lacrosse has gotten off to a dominant start. The Scarlet Knights have posted a 7-1 record through their first eight games and have not lost in over a month. During that stretch, they have been led by Scott Ross, who is having a stellar senior campaign.

In eight games, Ross has recorded 22 goals and seven assists. His 29 points are the second most on the team, trailing Dante Kulas by one. The talented attacker has proven to be a difficult matchup for opponents, as he has recorded six or more points in three games this season.

Additionally, the West Linn High School product is thriving in clutch situations with three game-winning goals. He has not been afraid of shooting the ball and leads the team with 67 shots and 43 shots on goal. While his start to the season has been impressive, it comes as no surprise after his success last year.

[lawrence-related id=25207]

As a junior, Ross had his breakout season with 75 points in 19 games. It was the first time in his collegiate career that the West Linn native had more than 20 points in a season. He has been even better through the first few weeks of the 2023 campaign.

On a Rutgers team with high expectations, Ross has been one of their best players. He will be relied on as a critical piece of offense this season, a role he has already shown he is more than capable of handling.

In final four loss, Rutgers men’s lacrosse is eyeing a bright future

Rutgers men’s lacrosse is pointed up after a strong season and an impressive NCAA Tournament run.

There is definitely a sense of an upward trajectory for the Rutgers men’s lacrosse program, even after Saturday’s loss to Cornell in the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament.

There is a lot to be said about this past season, where the Scarlet Knights made their first appearance in championship weekend and had a number of impressive wins. Under head coach Brian Brecht, the Scarlet Knights took another step forward as a program.

They finished the season 15-4 with a 4-1 record in Big Ten play. They made the Big Ten Tournament’s championship game and beat two ranked teams in the NCAA Tournament.

The sense of optimism surrounding the program also extends to the fanbase. The NCAA Tournament opening round against Harvard saw Rutgers draw the largest crowd of the weekend to Yurcak Field.

[lawrence-related id=16270]

It was a year where the senior-laden program established the potential for this program moving forward. In what is arguably the richest-recruiting turf in the country when it comes to lacrosse, Rutgers is well situated to reload with more talent via the transfer portal and traditional high school recruiting.

“I’m going to remember this year as the best year of my life. We’ve accomplished a lot,” senior captain Ryan Gallagher said after the game.

“In moments like this, you can forget what you’ve accomplished over the whole season. I think we’ve set a new bar for the program that our team can get back to this weekend again. I’m thankful to be a part of it.”

Rutgers was one of two Big Ten lacrosse programs to make the tournament. On Monday, Maryland beat Cornell to cap-off an 18-0 regular season that might go down as the best season in collegiate lacrosse history.

Maryland beat Rutgers once in the regular season and then again in the Big Ten’s championship game. Rutgers other regular-season loss came to Princeton, who lost to Maryland in the other semifinal of the NCAA Tournament.

Rutgers men’s lacrosse is focused ahead of a historic weekend for the program

Rutgers men’s lacrosse is set for a historic weekend in the NCAA Tournament

Rutgers men’s lacrosse made history this past weekend, with the program now two wins away from what would be the first team national championship in Scarlet Knights history, regardless of the sport.

On Saturday, Rutgers beat No. 3 UPenn 11-9 to advance to the first final four in program history. Next up is No. 7 Cornell for a spot in the championship game.

Rutgers is 14-3 on the season and reached as high as third overall in the Inside Lacrosse rankings this season. They lost to Maryland, the consensus top team in the nation, in the Big Ten Tournament’s championship game.

The win over UPenn means that the Rutgers men’s lacrosse team advanced to the NCAA Tournament’s semifinals for the first time in program history. The Scarlet Knights had lost their previous seven games in the quarterfinals.

[lawrence-related id=16192]

Sophomore Shane Knobloch, who scored three goals in keying the win over UPenn, spoke about the significance of this run through the NCAA Tournament.

“It’s definitely special. It’s something that’s obviously never been done before so it’s pretty cool to be a part of it,” Knobloch said on the Big Ten Network.

“And as I said, this senior class definitely deserves it. All the guys deserve it.”

The NCAA Tournament semifinal will take place this Saturday at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field.

The winner of the Rutgers v. Cornell game will take on the winner of No. 1 Maryland against No. 5 Princeton.

[lawrence-related id=16190]

Maryland (twice) and Princeton (in a non-conference game) are the only two teams to beat the Scarlet Knights this season.

“I mean, it’s the same every week for us; we try to keep it really consistent that’s what our coach really likes us to do so,” Knobloch said on BTN.

“We’ll start the week going over Rutgers and then we’ll start preparing for the team we’re playing. We usually have – we always have a great game plan so we came out on top [against UPenn]. It was good.”

In the fall, Rutgers women’s soccer notched the first Big Ten regular season title in the athletic department’s history. Field hockey took the Big Ten Tournament title, another first for not just the program but the entire athletic department.

Women’s soccer would advance to the final four teams in the NCAA Tournament.

Rutgers entered the Big Ten in 2014.

ON BTN, Mark Dixon says Rutgers men’s lacrosse Ross Scott is ‘one of the best players…in college lacrosse’

Rutgers men’s lacrosse Ross Scott gets praised by the Big Ten Network’s Ross Scott.

Rutgers men’s lacrosse is cruising into the second round of the NCAA Tournament, where they will face a UPenn program that won the Ivy League Tournament two weeks ago.

In the final regular season Inside Lacrosse rankings, Rutgers was eighth in the rankings. UPenn checked in at third.

Before a packed house at Yurcak Field, Rutgers beat Harvard 19-9 on Sunday in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. Ross Scott scored eight goals for Rutgers, the 5-foot-9 junior attacker turning in a big performance for the Scarlet Knights.

“Electric, it was unbelievable. I think the rest of the country, if they weren’t paying attention to Rutgers or Ross Scott, found out what we’ve known all along,” Big Ten Network analayst Mark Dixon said on Wednesday.

“Scott is one of the best players – attack or any position – in college lacrosse. He’s so fast, so quick. That was competitive game. What? 7-4 at halftime. The second half became the Ross Scott show. I believe he had seven of those eight goals in the second half of action.

“Everything was on display for him: his quickness, his shooting ability. His ability to turn the corner and get great shots off. In a time when Rutgers was so experienced: 27 seniors…you talk about the grad transfers in [Mitch] Bartolo and [Brian] Cameron and [Ronan] Jacoby, it is Ross Scott that has really paid his dues and has elevated his game to a whole other stratosphere in 2022.”

(Note: the halftime score was 7-5 in favor of Rutgers).

The second-round NCAA Tournament match at Hofstra between Rutgers and Harvard will take place at noon.

UPenn beat both Brown and Yale in the Ivy League Tournament. In the first round of the NCAA Tournament, they beat Richmond 11-10.

The win all but ensures that Rutgers lacrosse will return to the NCAA Tournament. There wasn’t much doubt about this, but beating Ohio State and advancing to the Big Ten title game is the final note in a strong resume for Rutgers this season.
