USC football’s possible trap game in the Big Ten this year

Two games emerge from the pack as possible trap games for USC this fall.

When you look at the 2024 USC football schedule, a few obvious possibilities emerge when discussing a potential trap game for the Trojans this fall in the Big Ten Conference.

USC hosts Wisconsin on Sept. 28 and hosts Penn State on Oct. 12. That makes the Oct. 5 game against Minnesota a possible trap game for USC. The Wisconsin and Penn State games are featured attractions on the coming Big Ten schedule, so the Minnesota game could get lost in the shuffle and become a game the Trojans might overlook. They might devote a little less energy and focus to that game, compared to the other Big Ten battles on the slate this year.

After the Penn State game on Oct. 12, the Trojans have to go to Maryland. The notable part of the Maryland game on Oct. 19 is that it precedes a Friday game against Rutgers on Oct. 25. That Maryland game’s kickoff time has not been announced, but that game could easily be a noon Eastern time start, 9 a.m. in the West. That could become a “body clock game” which trips up the Trojans.

Rutgers football lands Pennsylvania 3-star Gavin Sidwar

Gavin Sidwar commits to Rutgers football.

Three-star quarterback Gavin Sidwar committed to Rutgers football on Monday, becoming the Big Ten program’s first commitment in the class of 2026.

Sidwar is a 6-foot-3, 185-pound quarterback prospect at La Salle College (Wyndmoor, Pennsylvania). He holds offers from Duke, Indiana, Maryland, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Virginia, Virginia Tech and West Virginia among others.

Already a multi-year starter, last year, Sidwar was 186-for-285 with 2,439 passing yards and 29 touchdowns.

Rivals ranks him as a three-star and the No. 34 quarterback recruit in the nation in the 2026 class.

He cited a strong relationship with head coach Greg Schiano and offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca.

“It just felt right. I knew the last time I visited with my parents that I wanted to commit to Rutgers. Then I went to the Rutgers 7-on-7 and they were great to my mom and me. Relationships matter and I had the best relationships with the Rutgers staff,” Sidwar told USA TODAY High School Sports.

“I’ve started at La Salle since my freshman year. I’ve been on the radar for a while and visited many places. I learned it’s important to find the right fit and not chase logos. The more I got to know coach Schiano and coach Ciarrocca, the more I knew Rutgers was my spot.”

Sidwar said that other programs may reach out but that “I’m locked in” in terms of his future with Rutgers.

After multiple visits to the program this year, Sidwar felt a comfort level and didn’t want to lose out on being a part of the class.

“I knew how I felt about Rutgers and didn’t want to risk losing that spot to anyone else. My dad would ask me, ‘What offer right now you don’t have would make you hesitate on Rutgers?’ and I couldn’t come up with a school,” Sidwar said.

“Then he agreed I should lock it in. I wanted to play in the Big Ten. Rutgers checks all my boxes.”

Now for a second time, Greg Schiano’s vision for Rutgers football is turning into reality

Culture is the most important part of yet another Greg Schiano rebuild of Rutgers football.

BEDMINSTER, NEW JERSEY — The patient, pragmatic and at times painful rebuild of Rutgers football is once again on the verge of a dramatic step forward. And as the calendar turns to July, it is clear that Rutgers and head coach Greg Schiano have this program pointed up.

An incredible month of June for Rutgers football saw a staggering 20 commits during the month. There was a buzz about Rutgers, almost palatable at times, with the Big Ten program now ranked top-15 nationally.

As he did at Rutgers during his first tenure as head coach, Schiano has built – or rather rebuilt – this program from the bottom up. No shortcuts, no quick and easy fixes.

Following the program’s first winning season and bowl win since 2014, Rutgers clearly has the pieces to be competitive in the Big Ten. Now this summer has proven that Rutgers can be competitive in the toughest conference in college football.

And what is perhaps most impressive about it all is that Schiano and his staff did it differently than most of the other rebuilds around college football. They didn’t go crazy with the transfer portal. They don’t park luxury vehicles inside their stadium for flashy photo shoots.

Relationships and hard work, Schiano said, have paid off in piecing together a recruiting class that is likely to be the best in program history.

“It’s no secret. We need to be different. We can’t we’re not going to do it the same way that the ‘blue bloods’ do it and just do it better than them and go flying by them,” Schiano said prior to his charity golf classic at Fiddler’s Elbow.

“We got to be different. We got to do it our way and our way is different. So it’s pretty clear like usually players know they want to be part of it, or they know they don’t.”

Consider this class of 2025, which now has eight commits who are ranked as four-star recruits. While the class is star-heavy and talented, not every player in this class has been a high-profile recruit.

[lawrence-related id=39186,39179,39176]

Chase Linton, who committed to Schiano following the first official visit weekend in early June, holds just one Power Five offer (from Rutgers). That didn’t deter Schiano and his staff from getting in early on the Georgia defensive end.

Days after his commitment, 247Sports bumped Linto up to a four-star and made him the No. 28 edge rusher in the nation.

“First of all, he looks right through you and talks right at you – like he planned everything. Maybe he did,” Linton said of his relationship with Schiano.

“He’s more real than a lot of coaches I talked to and direct. It’s part of what (my family) liked a lot about him. And his staff is like that too. They treat me like family, like I matter not like a VIP guest like some other schools but more like family.

“I’m locked in. I didn’t take any of my other official visits and haven’t camped anywhere this whole summer. Now I’m only focused on senior year.”

When Schiano talks about his program, he speaks about culture.

[lawrence-related id=38855,38758]

There were no shortcuts to Schiano 1.0, and that certainly is the case now. In fact, Schiano might be the head coach in Power Five football who is most dedicated to self-discipline and integrity.

For some recruits, that type of mentality doesn’t fit with their understandable priority lists, often times topped by Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) and playing tome guarantees. But Schiano, even when chasing after a bigtime player, doesn’t change the culture of the program to fit the pitch.

Consider Malcolm Ray, a defensive tackle from Florida State.

Ray was heavily pursued by a number of those ‘blue blood’ programs. During his four seasons at Florida State, he had 60 total tackles with 3.5 sacks and two passes defended.

And yet he picked Rutgers despite some big programs coming in for him during his recruitment.

“It was a big risk. So I got to say, with coach Schiano, when we first got on the phone and we were talking like we knew each other from way back when,” Ray said.

“But it was just like the connection that we instantly. We clicked so fast and it was just like ‘How can I not?’ A connection with the head coach is like something you want. So it was just that it felt right.”

Rutgers football commit Chase Linton talks the Greg Schiano factor and his new 4-star ranking

Chase Linton talks about his Rutgers football commitment and his relationship with head coach Greg Schiano.

Chase Linton remains completely locked in with Rutgers football. One of the most intriguing players in this highly-ranked Scarlet Knights recruiting class, Linton is a fascinating recruiting prospect due to his athleticism.

Seriously under-recruited, Linton picked Rutgers over offers from Appalachian State, Bowling Green, Georgia State, UMass and Memphis. He committed to Rutgers in early June while on an official visit to the Big Ten program.

The 6-foot-4, 215-pound edge rusher had 61 total tackles last year along with five sacks and 20 tackles for a loss. He also had one forced fumble and three fumble recoveries for  North Atlanta High School (Atlanta, Georgia).

Since his commitment to Rutgers, Linton said that things are rolling along in the right direction with the Scarlet Knights and head coach Greg Schiano.

“Things are good. The commitment means a lot to me and my family,” Linton told Rutgers Wire.

“I’m planning to come to a game or two this season and right before school starts.

“Coach Schiano is amazing. I’m from a sports family so we pay attention to coaches a lot. And Schiano’s energy is just a good fit for me. He’s straightforward and respectable and credible. It was talking to him that really made a difference for me.”

This past month, Linton was bumped up to a four-star recruit by 247Sports.

He is now the No. 28 edge in the nation and the No. 35 recruit in the class of 2025.

[lawrence-related id=39176,39169,39164]

The bump in the ratings is a significant one for Linton and came after his commitment to the Scarlet Knights.

“It’s good to be noticed as a high-level player and it also means I really have to produce and play hard,” Linton said.

“So I’m happy about it but I know what really matters is what I do on the field.”

As Linton alluded to, his four-star ranking is sure to bring attention to the Georgia edge rusher.

“I’m locked in. I didn’t take any of my other official visits and haven’t camped anywhere this whole summer,” Linton said.

“Now I’m only focused on senior year.”

Film Breakdown – Rutgers football secured an elite athlete in Chase Linton

Rutgers football added an elite athlete to their defensive line when the Scarlet Knights received a commitment from prospect Chase Linton.

Rutgers football landed a commitment from an elite athlete at the defensive end position in four-star 2025 prospect Chase Linton.

The 6-foot-4, 215-pound edge rusher from North Atlanta High School in Georgia, Atlanta, is extremely athletic. His commitment in early June gives Rutgers yet another elite athlete in this recruiting class.

When Linton reports to campus in 2025, he can be impactful. He offers both stopping the run and putting pressure on the quarterback at the defensive end position. Linton has long arms, preventing offensive tackles from getting their hands on him.

Linton is a speedy pash rusher who plays gap-sounded defense in the rushing attack. He can pursue ball carriers, track down quarterbacks, and make plays in space, causing turnovers by ripping the football loose. His quick bursts of speed and agility will make it difficult for opposing Big Ten linemen.

Per 247Sports, Linton is a four-star and the No. 35 recruit in the nation.

[lawrence-related id=39082]

The future Scarlet Knight’s strengths thrive in passing situations, using his size and length to hurry or get hits on the quarterback. He does an excellent job disrupting the offensive rhythm, forcing the quarterback to panic in the pocket.

[lawrence-related id=39176,39169]

The average weight for an FBS Power Five defensive lineman is 260 pounds, making Linton undersize for his position. He has the length but needs to gain weight and strength. Linton will struggle in the Big Ten’s heavy rushing attack being outweighed on the defensive line.

Where does the Sporting News project Rutgers football’s bowl game?

Rutgers football has a bowl game projection from the Sporting News

It will be a second straight bowl appearance for Rutgers football, with the Sporting News projecting another postseason berth for the Big Ten program.

The projections come from the highly-respected Bill Bender (who is a great follow on Twitter X). Bender has projected all 35 non-College Football Playoff bowl games and the result is poignant for Rutgers.

Rutgers finished last year 7-6 (3-6 Big Ten).

The projection has Rutgers in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl on Dec. 26 against Maryland. The game is held at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona.

Rutgers played in this bowl game in 2005 against Arizona State in what was their first postseason appearance under head coach [autotag]Greg Schiano[/autotag]. Last year, they played in the Pinstripe Bowl, defeating Miami.

The Pinstripe Bowl was the scene of Schiano’s last game with Rutgers in 2011 before he left for the NFL. So in back-to-back years, Rutgers will have played in the first and last bowl game under Schiano.

Fitting from Bender, isn’t it?

Here are the Sporting News bowl game projections for all the Big Ten programs:

  • Detroit Bowl (Ohio vs. Michigan State, Dec. 26)
  • Guaranteed Rate Bowl (Rutgers vs. West Virginia, Dec. 26)
  • Pinstripe Bowl (Louisville vs. Maryland, Dec. 28)
  • Music City Bowl (Wisconsin vs. Tennessee, Dec. 30)
  • Reliaquest Bowl (Nebraska vs. Texas A&M, Dec. 31)
  • Citrus Bowl (LSU vs. Penn State, Dec. 31)
  • Duke’s Mayo Bowl (Miami vs. Iowa, Jan. 3)
  • Holiday Bowl (Pittsburgh vs. Washington, TBD)

Extrapolating these projections means that Bender seems to see Ohio State, Michigan, Oregon and USC making the expanded College Football Playoff.

Rutgers football will play a Big Ten rival in the ‘Scarlet Out’ game

The Scarlet Out game will be held on Oct. 12 when Wisconsin visits SHI Stadium

As anticipation for the 2024 college football season builds, Rutgers football has announced another themed game.

The ‘Scarlet Out’ game will be held on Oct. 12 when Wisconsin visits SHI Stadium. However, it will not be the only thing for fans to celebrate, as it will also be band day.

Fans who arrive early to the game will receive a free scarlet Block R t-shirt upon entering the stadium while supplies last. Festivities will also include performances from bands throughout the state at halftime. The fun does not stop there.

At the Rutgers Boardwalk, there will be a pregame parade and pep rally featuring the Scarlet Knight Marching Band, Spirit Team, and the Scarlet Knight horse “Excalibur,” with the Knight and the football team arriving. The Rutgers Boardwalk opens four hours before kickoff.

During the game, Rutgers will honor the Scarlet Society. The society is a top level of the RFund characterized by passion, loyalty, and generosity. It has made a memorable impact at Rutgers through its commitment to student-athletes.

[lawrence-related id=39139,39137,39135]

While this game will highlight what makes Rutgers unique, the Scarlet Knights will also be looking for revenge. Last year they lost their only match to Wisconsin 24-13. As Rutgers looks to improve in conference play, a win over the Badgers would be big.

Zaydaan Faridi recaps Rutgers football camp performance

It was a standout performance from Zaydaan Faridi at the recent Rutgers football camp.

Zaydaan Faridi walked away from the Rutgers football specialist camp two weeks ago with two bucket hats, his prize for a really outstanding performance at the event.

A kicker and punter from Clarksburg High School (Clarksburg, Maryland), Faridi is ranked a 4.5 star from Kohl’s. He is ranked the No. 100 kicker in the nation.

At the Rutgers specialist camp two weeks ago, Faridi won the field goal competition and the kicking competition.

The class of 2025 prospect was impressed by Rutgers during what was an important day for him kicking the ball.

“My time at Rutgers was great. It was an amazing experience to be able to kick inside the stadium,” Faridi told Rutgers Wire.

“The coaches and players hosted a well-organized camp. We started off with field goal charting where we kicked 8 field goals in an arc, I went 7-for-8. After that, we charted goal line field goals to test our accuracy. After the field goal charting, we went to kickoffs. Each person kicked three kickoffs that were charted. The distances of my kicks were 68, 71, and 76 yards. Once all the charting was over, we went to field goal competition.

“Only six people were selected and it was single elimination. First kick from 42 yards, second kick from 44 yards, and third kick from 50 yards. I won the field goal competition with a 50-yarder. After that, coach Allen (senior analyst Eddie Allen who handles special teams) told me to go back to 55 and I made that too.”

This summer is a busy one for Faridi. He will be participating in the New England Elite Mega Camp as well as camps at Georgetown, UPenn, Towson and Lafayette.

Faridi will also be at the Kohl’s National Invitational in late July in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

Rutgers was a good start to this busy summer for Faridi.

“The program is great,” Faridi said.

“I also love the time and effort the whole coaching staff puts into special teams.”

ESPN 300 wide receiver Travis Johnson, a 4-star, talks recent Rutgers football offer

ESPN 300 wide receiver Travis Johnson, recently offered by Rutgers football, talks about his offer. #Rutgers

Following an offer from Rutgers football earlier this week, Travis Johnson said that a relationship with the Big Ten program is already being formed.

Johnson,  the No. 72 recruit in the ESPN 300 for the 2026 class is a 6-foot-2, 175-pound wide receiver from Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, Virginia). He was offered by Rutgers on Monday.

In addition to playing wide receiver, he is also a forward on the varsity basketball team.

He has a strong offer list that includes  Boston College, Duke, Florida, Indiana, Maryland Miami, Michigan State, Penn State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia Tech and West Virginia.

Following his offer from Rutgers, Johnson gave his first impression of the Scarlet Knights and the Big Ten program.

“The offer coming in from coach Schiano means so much! I really like what Rutgers stands for,” Johnson told Rutgers Wire.

“How they support their players on and off the field and their core values.

“My mom and I had a great conversation with coach Schiano.”

Johnson hasn’t visited Rutgers yet, but that looks like it could well change.

[lawrence-related id=39135,39121,38638]

“I feel like I need to get up there soon,” Johnson said.

This week, he will participate in the Under Armour Next Future 50 football camp.

Where is New Jersey 4-star linebacker Kamar Archie heading? On3 has a prediction

Where is Kamar Archie headed?

Kamar Archie, who took an official visit to Rutgers football earlier this month, is expected to make his college commitment sometime in early July.

A four-star linebacker, Archie plays for The Hun School in Princeton, N.J. He has an offer list that includes FloridaGeorgia, Miami, Rutgers and South Carolina among others.

The On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine has Rutgers football in the driver’s seat on this one, with the Scarlet Knights at 41.2 percent.

Penn State is a distant second at 18.2 percent. Michigan comes in at 12.5 percent.

In mid-June, Archie took an official visit to Rutgers

If you’re not familiar with the Recruiting Prediction Machine, it is pretty interesting stuff. According to On3, the prediction machine “Combines data and expert predictions on an AI platform.”

Archie having Rutgers with an edge in the projection is big news for the Scarlet Knights. He is the No. 32 linebacker prospect in the nation according to ESPN (where he is also a four-star)

In the On3 Industry Rankings, Archie is a four-star and the No. 196 player in the nation.

[lawrence-related id=39124,39121,38638]

Were Archie in fact to commit to Rutgers, he would give Rutgers three commits in On3’s top 10 for New Jersey and five total commits among the top 15 players in the state in this recruiting cycle.

What a statement that would be for the Scarlet Knights.
