Shelby Harris on Seahawks’ critics: ‘We’re gonna come smack you in the face’

The Seattle Seahawks are absolutely fired up about their most-recent victory, a 27-13 home win over the Giants on Sunday.

The Seattle Seahawks are absolutely fired up about their most-recent victory, a 27-13 home win over the Giants on Sunday.

The defense in particular has reason to celebrate. After struggling the first month of the season, they have pulled off a 180-degree turn and now look like one of the better units in the league. Yesterday several individual defenders came through with stops in clutch moments, including Ryan Neal, Mike Jackson, Uchenna Nwosu and Bruce Irvin. Shelby Harris had one of the biggest ones, chasing down Daniel Jones for a tackle at a critical juncture in the game. Here’s what Harris had to say when asked about the play.

Seahawks great Chad Brown calls trading Russell Wilson a ‘genius’ move

Watch former Seahawks linebacker Chad Brown tell USA TODAY Sports that Pete Carroll trading Russell Wilson was genius.

We’re now roughly half way through the 2022 season. There’s no more excuse for small sample sizes and flukes – at this point the Seahawks look like a legitimate playoff team, they have a seriously-good starting quarterback and their former franchise guy is now one of the most-limited passers in football.

2023 NFL draft order: Seahawks still in position for 2 impact picks

After six weeks of games, Seattle is line to pick twice in the top 14 picks.

Coming into this season, some folks thought these Seahawks were going to be in position for a No. 1 overall pick in next year’s draft. That’s not going to be the case based on what we have seen so far. While they’re far from a dominant group this team looks good enough to at least compete for a wild card spot this year. However, Seattle should still be getting a good haul in the draft. Thanks to the Russell Wilson trade, they hold Denver’s first and second-round picks next year.

That means after six weeks Seattle is line to pick twice in the top 14 picks. Here is the updated 2022 NFL draft order going into Week 7.

1. Carolina Panthers
2. Las Vegas Raiders
3. Detroit Lions
4. Houston Texans
5. Philadelphia Eagles (via New Orleans Saints)
6. Houston Texans (via Cleveland Browns)
7. Seattle Seahawks (via Denver Broncos)
8. Pittsburgh Steelers
9. Arizona Cardinals
10. Jacksonville Jaguars
11. Chicago Bears
12. Washington Commanders
13. Atlanta Falcons
14. Seattle Seahawks
15. Cincinnati Bengals
16. New England Patriots
17. Miami Dolphins (forfeited)
18. Green Bay Packers

The rest of the teams are on pace for playoff spots.

Russell Wilson says he wanted to go to a ‘city that wants to win’

Wilson’s latest comments probably won’t sit well with Seattle fans who would have preferred he’d stayed.

Former Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson publicly maintained that he wanted to stay in Seattle, right up until he was traded to the Broncos. That directly contradicts what the front office told us after the deal was made. head coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider claim that Wilson would not have agreed to sign another contract with the Seahawks, so they felt they had to trade him.

Wilson’s latest comments probably won’t sit well with Seattle fans who would have preferred he’d stayed. Russ is now saying that he wanted to go to a “city that wants to win.”

One could perceive that as throwing shade at his former team, which managed to get to the playoffs in eight of the ten seasons when he was their starting quarterback.

Wilson is now in the most competitive division in the NFL. His Broncos will visit Seattle Week 1 on Monday night.

Shelby Harris gushes over new Seahawks defense: ‘You guys will love it’

Seahawks fans who are looking for a silver lining should probably focus their attention on defense.

Seahawks fans who are looking for a silver lining in what’s been a dark and difficult offseason should probably focus their attention on defense. At the moment, their roster doesn’t have a sure-thing at quarterback, left tackle or right tackle. That situation will likely change over the next few weeks but for now the most promising things about this squad are on the other side of the ball.

The loss of Bobby Wagner at middle linebacker is hard to stomach. However, Cody Barton looked more-than-ready to take over and start at a respectable level late in 2021. More importantly, this defense is undergoing a change in philosophy under new defensive coordinator Clint Hurtt. Coach Pete Carroll has admitted that his team has been a little bit arrogant over the years on defense and realized a change was needed.

A defensive line guy by nature, Hurtt will be bringing a more aggressive approach – at least compared with that of former defensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr., whose scheme had become too passive and predictable.

One guy who’s a big fan of the new D is also one of the new faces that came over in the Russell Wilson trade. Shelby Harris is perhaps the NFL’s most underrated defensive lineman and our favorite part of the deal. Harris spoke with members of Seattle’s media for the first time yesterday and he gushed at length about both Hurtt and his defense.

Harris says that Hurtt came highly-recommended by former teammate Teddy Bridgewater:

“I’m just excited to work with coach Hurtt. I’ve heard so much about him, I remember that Teddy Bridgewater was the first person to text me, he was like, ‘You’re going to love coach Hurtt, he is the man.'”

Here’s how he described the defense.

” I’m a big believer in this scheme. It creates a lot of turnovers, creates a lot of havoc, and is very easy to scheme and confuse quarterbacks. I just think that it fits me very well, obviously. I’ve always believed in 3-4’s—I just think that 3-4’s are better run stoppers and in the division that we play in, with the Rams, Cardinals, and 49ers, the Rams and 49ers are run-heavy teams and this kind of neutralizes that a little bit. This defense, you guys will love it, you guys will see that it is a mixture of rush and coverage working together. You are going to get a lot of zones out of it, but once everybody gets it, it’s going to be hard to stop.”

Exciting.

Seahawks: 4 takeaways from Pete Carroll’s Tuesday radio call with ESPN

Naturally, the major topic to come up was the recent Russell Wilson trade,

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll called into ESPN for his regular radio bit today.

Here are a few takeaways from that conversation from those beat reporters that tuned in.

John Clayton was not a fan of the Russell Wilson trade

Humility being one of his great strengths, Clayton later admitted he was wrong about Wilson getting traded. That doesn’t mean he was wrong about the reasons why.

The NFL lost another giant this week. While he never took the field, John Clayton made the game immeasurably more enjoyable for everyone who read his work or listened to his words. In addition to being a stellar all-around human being, Clayton was about as plugged in as anyone when it came to the Seahawks. He did not believe that Seattle was going to trade Russell Wilson this offseason – at one point calling it the most overrated story in 50 years.

When he was asked on the radio about why the Seahawks would trade Wilson he offered a very-much to the point reply:

Humility being one of his great strengths, Clayton later admitted he was wrong about Wilson getting traded. That doesn’t mean he was wrong about the reasons.

The Seahawks did get a good haul of draft captal in the deal and there’s still time for them to find a suitable starter to replace Wilson – even if their options are dwindling by the day. That said, right now the trade has put them in an unenviable position. By taking a major step back at quarterback, they’ve done incredible harm to their roster.

According to the Pro Football Focus offseason improvement index, the Seahawks have taken the largest step backwards in the NFL so far. Meanwhile, the Broncos have enjoyed the biggest jump.

Not great, Bob.
