Reaction to Rudy Giuliani’s ‘unsettling’ comments on Michelle Wie West

Rudy Giuliani’s comments about Michelle Wie West on a podcast drew ire from the sports and political worlds.

The comments blew up Friday night. On Saturday, angry reactions rang across the internet.

Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani told a story about LPGA star Michelle Wie West on Steve Bannon’s “War Room” podcast Thursday which made headlines.

The story, which recounts a round Giuliani played with the late Rush Limbaugh at a charity fundraiser seven years ago, made Wie West “shudder,” the five-time LPGA winner said in a statement released on Twitter late Friday night.

“I shudder thinking that he was smiling to my face and complimenting me on my game while objectifying me,” Wie West wrote in part.

Giuliani called the story “funny.” The story instead drew the ire of many.

Some of those reactions can be read below.

Michelle Wie West on Rudy Giuliani: ‘I shudder thinking that he was smiling to my face … while objectifying me’

Michelle Wie West took to Twitter to express outrage over a story former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani told referencing her panties.

Michelle Wie West took to Twitter on Friday night to express outrage over a story former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani told on Steve Bannon’s “War Room” podcast Thursday.

“Do you have time for a funny story?” Giuliani began.

He then proceeded to recount a round with the late Rush Limbaugh at a charity fundraiser seven years ago in which the paparazzi were “driving us crazy.” Giuliani went on to suggest that the photographers were actually in pursuit because of the putting stance of their playing partner Michelle Wie, who “bends all the way over and her panties show.”

“What this person should have remembered from that day,” Wie wrote, “was the fact that I shot 64 and beat every male golfer in the field leading our team to victory. I shudder thinking that he was smiling to my face and complimenting me on my game while objectifying me and referencing my ‘panties’ behind my back all day.”

A frustrated Wie went on to say that what should be discussed is the elite skill level of female professionals rather than what they wear or their appearance.

“My putting stance six years ago was designed to improve my putting stats,” Wie wrote, noting that she won the U.S. Women’s Open that year. “NOT as an invitation to look up my skirt!”

At the conclusion of his disturbing story, Giuliani said, “Is that OK to tell that joke? I’m not sure.”

A straight-faced Bannon, who looked increasingly uncomfortable, replied “We already told it, so I don’t know.”

Wie, 31, is a five-time winner on the LPGA. She’s currently on maternity leave after giving birth to daughter Makenna Kamalei Yoona West last June.

No ice, Rudy Giuliani, Dion Waiters and other Lakers championship moments

The Los Angeles Lakers won the NBA Championship on Sunday night and led to a couple of great moments online.

LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers finished off the Miami Heat in Sunday night’s Game 6 to win the 2020 NBA Championship, unleashing over a year of emotions and accomplishments in the celebration. The Lakers were in celebration mode as soon as the game ended on Sunday night and as they were for the whole season, LeBron and Anthony Davis were attached at the hip. As both were leaving the arena to get on the bus and get back to the hotel, LeBron gave Anthony Davis a little bit of a heads up that he’s about to be sorer than he’s ever been this season, because the game after you win a championship is the only game after which you don’t ice.

The Lakers were also a team filled with great redemption story arcs. Perhaps none more complete with twists and turns than that of Dwight Howard, who left the Lakers after the 2012-13 season, but returned in 2019-20 as an instrumental part of their championship run. On Instagram Live, he told his followers to “never give up on your dreams,” while fighting back tears.

Dion Waiters, who came to the Lakers from Miami by way of a trade to Memphis, was suspended multiple times by the Heat earlier this season. Waiters said on Instagram Live during the celebration that he was targeted by the Heat organization, but he had the last laugh.

Then in the hater category, we had perhaps the most hilarious tweet of that genre coming from former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani, who said the Lakers parade should be in China.

The Lakers are champions again, muscles are sore and emotions are high. But the celebration is only beginning.
