Steelers work out ex-Ravens WR James Proche, release CB

Ex-Ravens WR James Proche could find himself on the Pittsburgh Steelers roster in the coming days.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have an open roster spot after releasing cornerback Kalon Barnes, and it could be filled by a former Baltimore Ravens receiver. Per the NFL transactions wire, the Steelers worked out James Proche, a 2020 sixth-round selection by the Ravens.

With 202 receiving yards, 2021 was Proche’s best season in the league. Overall, he played in 43 games with 278 yards on 25 receptions.

In what was once a pretty deep receiver room, Diontae Johnson (hamstring) is out (at least) until after the team’s Week 6 bye. Gunner Olszewski was out last week with a concussion, but he wasn’t playing well in the limited snaps he was given.

Though his past numbers are nothing to write home about, what could be attractive to the Steelers is Proche’s experience as a punt and kick returner (244 yards on 29 returns).

Steelers elevate NT Breiden Fehoko to the 53-man roster

The Pittsburgh Steelers elevated nose tackle Breiden Fehkoko to the 53-man roster.

Former Los Angeles Chargers defensive tackle Breiden Fehoko is being signed from the practice squad to the active 53-man roster, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. He’s a nose tackle in the Pittsburgh Steelers scheme, where Montravius Adams and rookie Keeanu Benton currently play.

Fehoko’s forte is run-stopping, an area where the Steelers have struggled mightily through two weeks. The defense is dead last against the run, allowing 193 yards per game for a 5.6 average.

The Steelers signed Fehoko, 26, to a one-year contract in April, released him on roster cutdown day and signed him to the practice squad on August 30.

In three seasons with the Chargers, he had played in 23 games, starting 12, and has 36 career tackles, including 15 solo tackles in three seasons with the Chargers who signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2020.

Texans place Jonathan Greenard on injured reserve ahead of matchup vs. Raiders

The #Texans made two moves that could affect their season ahead of their Sunday afternoon matchup against the #Raiders

The Houston Texans activated one player off injured reserve and placed another on the list ahead of their Sunday afternoon matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders. Rookie linebacker Christian Harris was elevated to the 53-man roster after an injury had sidelined him since September 1st.

Defensive end Jonathan Greenard was placed on the reserve list after sustaining a calf injury this week that is expected to keep him out for some time. Greenard was a third-round pick by the Texans in the 2020 NFL draft, and was a consistent starter for the team last season, racking up eight sacks and 33 tackles in 12 games.

A fellow third-round selection, Harris will be seeing his first action of the season in the coming weeks after a hamstring injury necessitated that he started the season on injured reserve. Harris has a bright future in the league ahead of him as a rangy linebacker who has some pop to his hits on opposing ballcarriers.

With some of the holdovers from the previous regime expected to be moved at the trade deadline, these transactions clear the way for Houston to be flexible in their strategies as November 1st draws nearer. Harris’ inclusion in the Texans’ defense will give them the ability to deal one of the other talented linebackers on their roster for draft picks, and Greenard’s reserve status could potentially clear the way for another trade candidate to see the field in an effort to pique another team’s interest in their services.

While Greenard’s production will be sorely missed by the Texans’ defense, especially with the matchup against Las Vegas just a day away, Harris’ activation should excite Houston fans. The team has an opportunity to leave the Raiders as the AFC’s worst team with a win on the road this weekend, and they could start to claw their way back from the dismal 1-3-1 start that has marred their 2022 campaign to this point.

Houston Texans preseason roster cuts tracker

The Houston Texans have a cut deadline after each of their three preseason games. Follow along with the cuts here.

Every week has a cut day in the NFL’s new three-game preseason.

For the Houston Texans, they have to get at 85 men on their roster on Aug. 17 by 3:00 p.m. Central Time.

On Aug. 24, the Texans will have to go to 80 by 3:00 p.m. Central Time.

The big day is Aug. 31 as the Texans will have to get at 53 men by 3:00 p.m. Central Time.

“The goal for training camp is for everybody to establish a level of performance,” general manager Nick Caserio told reporters on July 28. “We’re not going to predetermine everything. Nobody has a defined role. We’re going to go out there and let the players take care of themselves, and that will sort itself out.”

Here is a list of all of the cuts throughout preseason.

Texans release WR Donte Moncrief, make other roster moves ahead of training camp

The Houston Texans released receiver Donte Moncrief and made other roster moves ahead of their first day of training camp.

The Houston Texans made a series of roster transactions as they gear up for their first day of training camp.

The Texans released receiver Donte Moncrief, terminating his contract as a vested veteran.

Houston also placed tackle Geron Christian, running back Buddy Howell, and receiver Taywan Taylor on the COVID-19 reserve.

Across the league there were 15 players, including the Texans, who were placed on their team’s COVID-19 reserves. All but one of them were the result of a positive test.

Cornerback Cornell Armstrong, defensive end DeMarcus Walker, tight end Pharaoh Brown, and safety Lonnie Johnson were placed on the non-football injury list. However, they will count on the active list.

The Texans’ first practice is at 9:00 a.m. Central Time Wednesday at Houston Methodist Training Center.

Houston Texans are 3rd in 2021 waiver wire priority

The Houston Texans will be third in the waiver wire priority throughout the 2021 season.

There are some things the Houston Texans didn’t lose in their trade with the Miami Dolphins to acquire left tackle Laremy Tunsil.

According to Field Yates of ESPN, the waiver wire system restarted on Feb. 9. The waiver wire system works much like the NFL draft order, except the placement can’t be traded away.

As a result, the Texans will have the third crack at any player that is placed on waivers. The only teams ahead of Houston are the Jacksonville Jaguars and the New York Jets.

Yates commented, “Good opportunity for Jacksonville to have the first chance at young talent to develop.” Yet the same advantage is as true for the Jets and the Texans as it is for the Jaguars. The NFL has a series of advantages to help teams stay at around .500, and the waiver wire system is one of them.

New general manager Nick Caserio, who has experience working the waiver wire for the New England Patriots as their director of player personnel, will have to find ways to cultivate the best talent off the wire given he won’t have a first or a second-round pick in April’s draft to add premium talent.

Texans call help from practice squad against the Titans in Week 17

The Houston Texans made a few roster moves as they gear up to play the Tennessee Titans in Week 17 at NRG Stadium.

The Houston Texans called up some players from the practice squad as they prepare to close out their regular season against the Tennessee Titans Sunday at 3:25 p.m. CT at NRG Stadium.

The club placed guard Brent Qvale on injured reserve. The 6-7, 315-pound offensive lineman was knocked out of Week 16 with a concussion in the 37-31 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Qvale was still in concussion protocol; his season is over.

The Texans signed receiver Steven Mitchell to the active roster from the practice squad.

As part of the Texans’ standard elevations from the practice squad, Houston promoted guard Beau Benzschawel.

Houston’s COVID-19 replacement on the active roster is center-guard Greg Mancz.

Texans waive RB C.J. Prosise, sign WR Damion Ratley to active roster

The Houston Texans made adjustments to the active roster, waiving RB C.J. Prosise and signing WR Damion Ratley to the active roster.

The Houston Texans continue to find ways to adjust their roster, even as they enter a meaningless Week 17.

The club waived running back C.J. Prosise on Monday and signed receiver Damion Ratley from the practice squad to the active roster.

Prosise played in 10 games for the Texans, carrying 10 times for 19 yards and catching five passes for 18 yards and a touchdown. The former Seattle Seahawks 2016 third-round pick also had eight kickoff returns for 149 yards.

Ratley, a former Yoakum High School and Texas A&M product, was taken by the Cleveland Browns in Round 6 of the 2018 NFL Draft. Ratley spent two seasons with Cleveland before being waived at the end of training camp. The 6-2, 200-pound wideout played for the New York Giants until being waived on Oct. 13.

Texans sign WR Chad Hansen to active roster, other roster moves

The Houston Texans have signed receiver Chad Hansen to the active roster among other roster moves ahead of Week 15 at the Indianapolis Colts.

The Houston Texans made a series of roster moves as they get ready to take on the Indianapolis Colts Sunday at 12:00 p.m. CT at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The first was to sign receiver Chad Hansen to the active roster from the practice squad. After the Colts game, Hansen will remain on the roster, not revert back to the practice squad as he did the previous two weeks.

Houston did elevate undrafted free agent defensive lineman Auzoyah Alufohai and cornerback Anthony Chesley from the practice squad to the active roster for game day.

Receiver Steven Mitchell was elevated from the practice squad to the active roster for the third straight week. Unlike the past two weeks, Mitchell was activated as part of a COVID-19 roster replacement for guard Hjalte Froholdt.

The Texans also activated outside linebacker Brennan Scarlett from injured reserve.

Texans activate OLB Brennan Scarlett’s 21-day window to come off injured reserve

The Houston Texans activated the 21-day window to allow OLB Brennan Scarlett to return. The Texans also signed Beau Benzschawel to the practice squad.

The Houston Texans announced Wednesday they have activated the 21 day window to allow outside linebacker Brennan Scarlett to return from injured reserve.

The Texans placed Scarlett on injured reserve with a fractured forearm after Week 9’s 27-25 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars at TIAA Bank Field. On the season, Scarlett has provided 25 tackles and a quarterback hit in eight games, four of which he has started.

Scarlett’s absence has allowed for youngsters such as Jonathan Greenard and Jacob Martin to get more reps in defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver’s scheme.

Houston also announced they have signed center-guard Beau Benzschawel to the practice squad. Benzschawel is a 2019 undrafted free agent from Wisconsin who spent time with the Detroit Lions from 2019-20, mainly on their practice squad and offseason roster.
