Packers 53-man roster prediction entering second preseason game

Attempting to cut the Packers roster down to 53 players after one preseason game and two joint practices.

The Green Bay Packers have hosted one preseason game and two joint practices during training camp, providing a strong basis for evaluating the status of the team’s roster and guessing how the top 53 players might shake out in a few weeks.

The Packers will play the New York Jets on Saturday night.

Before the Packers play their second of three preseason games, here’s our attempt to whittle the roster down from 85 players to 53:

53-man roster prediction 3.0: Cowboys prepare to return to Texas

With Dallas set to play their 2nd exhibition, here’s a guess as to where players stand prior to putting more on tape. A look at what’s changed from the prior prediction and who will make the 53 + PS | From @KDDrummondNFL

The Dallas Cowboys played their first exhibition game of the season last Thursday. A large portion of their 90-man offseason roster was held out of the Hall of Fame game contest against the Pittsburgh Steelers though. 16 players were left behind in Oxnard, CA and then several key young players projected to earn starting roles were kept on the sideline.

It made for an expected starless performance as players in the middle and at the bottom of the roster got valuable game reps to try and enhance their camp experiences. When the team returned to the west coast, the Los Angeles Rams were waiting for full-squad coordinated practices, and that gave folks a chance to see many of those players who didn’t play previously. The results from both? A chance to revisit our roster projections for the regular season.

Colts’ 53-man roster prediction halfway through training camp

Predicting the Colts’ 53-man roster halfway through training camp.

With 10 practices under their belt and 10 still left to go over the next three weeks, the Indianapolis Colts are officially halfway through training camp.

The team still has all three preseason games to go so the roster is far from complete. Unlike the 2020 season, the Colts will have three mile-markers to get the roster down to 53 players for the upcoming regular season.

Each cut-down date will be the Tuesday following a preseason game. The first-cut down date (Aug. 17) will require the Colts to reduce the active roster from 90 to 85 players. The next cut day (Aug. 24) will be reduced another five spots down to 80 players. Then following the final preseason game, the third cut date (Aug. 31), will require the Colts to be down to 53 players.

There is still a long way to go before the roster becomes clear, but here’s a crack at predicting the 53-man roster as we hit the halfway point in training camp:

Colts’ 53-man roster prediction following spring workouts

A mid-June roster prediction.

The Indianapolis Colts have been separated from team workouts since they decided to forgo mandatory minicamp and end the spring activities at the beginning of June.

While mandatory minicamp would have given us a bit more information as to what the position battles look like, we still have enough to make an educated guess as to what the roster will look like.

Following the spring workouts, here’s a 53-man roster prediction for the Colts as training camp is just over a month away:

Colts’ 53-man roster projection post-draft

A roster projection following the draft.

The Indianapolis Colts will be shoring up the roster with a few undrafted rookie free agents following the 2021 NFL draft but most of the focus is now on preparing for the upcoming campaign.

As the Colts’ 2021 draft class concluded its haul with seven players—the fewest in Chris Ballard’s tenure—they will be working the entire offseason to find the best 53 players to begin the season with.

A lot will change from this writing in May until the roster cuts at the end of August, but we are going to take a look at a way-too-early roster projection for Indy following the draft. Rookies will be noted in italics.

Colts’ pre-draft 53-man roster prediction

A pre-draft roster prediction.

With just three weeks until the start of the 2021 NFL draft, the Indianapolis Colts look like a strong team built to make a serious playoff run in this upcoming season.

The draft comes with new opportunity, and the infusion of fresh young talent to make every team even stronger. One might ask how do the Colts stack up on paper as of right now after a relatively quiet offseason focused on improving team depth?

It should be noted that a lot of this will change following the draft. The Colts have six picks right now and with undrafted free agents also coming into the picture, the roster will look much different. It will also give us a chance to see just how much has changed following the draft.

Here, we’ll take a look at how the current roster might shake out if rosters needed be cut down to the league-mandated 53 players ahead of the draft:

Way-too-early 53-man roster prediction for the Colts

Predicting the 53-man roster far too soon.

The Indianapolis Colts have concluded the 2020 NFL draft and will be looking to fill out the 90-man roster with some undrafted rookie free agents this weekend.

[lawrence-related id=43563]

Eventually, though, the Colts will have to trim their rosters down to 53 players—the final year before rosters expand to 55. A lot will happen over the coming months that will change the perception of the roster and the depth chart, and yes it is far too early to truly know what the final product will look like in September.

With all that said, here is a way-too-early roster prediction for the 2020 Colts:

QB | RB | WR | TE | OL | DL | LB | CB | SAF | ST

Quarterback (3)

QB1 QB2 QB3
Philip Rivers Jacoby Brissett Jacob Eason*

Analysis: After Brissett’s disappointing 2019 campaign, the Colts set out to change up the quarterback room. They did so in a big way adding a player in both free agency and the draft. Rivers will be the starter after signing a one-year, $25 million deal in free agency. There are no questions about that, and there’s even a chance he extends his stay past 2020. The Colts still say they value Brissett despite their actions showing otherwise. It’s unlikely he’s traded so he’ll carry a $21.3 million cap hit to not see the field. Eason was drafted in the fourth round and will battle it out with Chad Kelly for the QB3 spot, but his arm talent his far superior and seeing as the Colts wouldn’t be able to put him on the practice squad, they carry three quarterbacks here.

Notable cuts: Chad Kelly
